Check out yesterday’s box scores here
Gotta hand it to Cole Carrigg today. The Rockies scored nine on the Padres, and it was mostly powered by Cole who had four hits, two homers, and five RBI.
Carrigg has had an exceptional rookie year, hitting .270/.338/.474 now with ten homers and nine steals in 82 games. That’s a half of a year plus one game, so it’s a near 20-20 pace with an .813 OPS. Very useful stuff.
His home/road:
Pretty much as expected. .331 at home .213 on the road. We’ll see if he can figure that out, few Rockies bats are able to. Carrigg’s EV90 is 103.3 and his stolen base attempt rate is 17%. So he’s bursting with raw talent, but he’s a very strong hitter who had handled the K% (23.5%) and BB% (8.6%) well. The Rockies should have him in there every day in the heart of the order for the future. For fantasy, it’s always tougher to have a guy who can’t hit well in half of his games, but this is a massive win for Carrigg this year and he’ll be a relevant Rockies bat for us next year along with Goodman, McCarthy (if he were to return to Colorado), and maybe Zac Veen and Mickey Moniak as well.
Moniak has been sucking, by the way. He had a hit here but is hitting just .173/.208/.346 since August 1st. Five homers, no steals, .554 OPS. Rough stuff, clearly not a guy you start anywhere outside of Coors, and even that’s tough right now.
Spencer Torkelson had a rare swipe and pipe. Big game for him (on my home league bench!), scoring three times and driving in three. Brutal bench for me there. But it’s not like the guy has been a good 12-team league player this year.
→ .225/.318/.421, 24 HR, 1 SB
This was just the sixth steal of his career, and he’s hit .203, .234, .219, .240, and .225 now in his five seasons. But he can hit some homers. He hit 31 last year and should clear 25 again this year, and he has a walk rate of 11% the last two years.
Two dingers for Travis Bazzana, who continues to look amazing of late. And Jeremy Pena also hit two homers. Pena’s updated career table:
We knew he wouldn’t hit .300 again this year, and .270 is still pretty good. 19 more homers this year in just 101 game (missed some time with an injury early on). The nine steals aren’t great, and the attempt rate is down a bit from the previous years. But he’s scored 73 times in 101 games, so he’s still done okay.
Bryce Eldridge hit a very long homer. We haven’t heard much of anything from him lately. He has hit the ball hard this year (106.6 EV90, 113.4 max, 11.7% Brl%), but a 27% K% and lower air pull rate (14%) plus the home park has limited him to just 17 homers in 437 PAs. That’s a weaker home run rate than we expected. But his EVs and solid line drive rate has him hitting .274/.366/.465 with a BABIP north of .330. Some good signs there, but it’s always really tough for left-handed power bats to matter in San Francisco because of that home park. Devers had it figured out, so maybe Eldridge can do that too down the road. One point of good news is that he’s hit lefties pretty well (.298/.374/.508, 6 HR). In fact, he’s hit them better than he’s hit righties (.255/.352/.443, 11 HR).
Coby Mayo hit an inside-the-park home run. But hey, it counts, and he has hit 24 bombs now in 123 games. The .226/.291/.468 slash isn’t great, he doesn’t play every day against righties, and has just a 5% SB attempt% in his MLB career now. So we’re not really caring about him for 12-team fantasy leagues any time soon, but he’s certainly played himself onto the roster for next year. If he can figure out righties to some extent, he could have a big breakout season down the road. He’s yet to turn 25.
82 pitches for Misiorowski, 5 scoreless with seven strikeouts. He remains healthy and ready to go for the postseason. Their first playoff game will probably be two weeks from today, so there might be only one more regular season start for Mizz as the Brewers have clinched the division already.
Gilbert and Yamamoto did what they do:
Gilbert - 6.0IP 6H 2ER 2R 7K 2BB
Yamamoto - 7.0IP 1H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB
Two studs there. Yamamoto’s consistency is really incredible especially with the splitter. He’d have to be one of the top five SPs you’d start a new MLB franchise with if you were drafting.
Hunter Brown struck out ten - 5.0IP 2H 1ER 1R 10K 3BB
15 whiffs, three walks, 44% ball% though. The command isn’t there, and he was inefficient last night needing 91 pitches to get those 15 outs.
Kevin Gausman - 5.67IP 5H 2ER 2R 6K 0BB
15 whiffs, decent outing, didn’t walk anybody. He’s still been a disappointment, he turned in a decent start here against the Braves.
Max Fried threw 88 pitches and cruised through seven innings.
→ 7.0IP 6H 1ER 1R 6K 0BB
Great to see there that Fried is built back up and pitching well. You can start him with confidence and he’ll make a pretty tough 1-2 postseason pairing with Schlittler.
Cristopher Sanchez - 6.33IP 8H 5ER 5R 5K 2BB
He does not have that Yamamoto consistency. He’s given up 18 hits and 11 earned runs in his last two outings.
Plenty of studly starts, really good overall numbers (2.97 ERA, 1.22 WHIP), but a handful of starts that you were not happy with at all.
Ryan Johnson - 6.0IP 6H 1ER 1R 7K 0BB
Dude’s just doing it. Since August 6th:
→ 8 GS, 44.1 IP, 2.03 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 18.6% K%, 10.7% BB%
This was his first start without a walk and his first time over six strikeouts. So he was actually good this time. Shout out to you if you’ve been starting him even through the bad peripheral numbers.
He has definitely been pretty lucky, but he was pretty unlucky early on. His SIERA on the year is 5.01, which is awful, but it’s lined up with his 4.88 ERA. But that’s come weird. He under-performed for awhile and now he’s over-performing, although last night again we’ll see he was very, very good.
An update on the SIERA-ERA gaps:
Plenty of luck from E-Rod, M Perez, Melton, Martinez, Ohtani, Robbie Ray, and Urena. But changeups and ground balls help you do this reliably, so it’s not a super clean stat.
The other way around:
Lots of times these are just guys who have horrible ERAs to where SIERA isn’t going to go that high. There’s also Coors Field & Sacramento represented in the top three names.
I’d say it’s fine news for Grayson Rodriguez, Connor Prielipp, Gage Jump, and Emmet Sheehan for next year.
Let’s look at your unluckiest hitters of the last month:
These are the biggest gaps between each hitter’s wOBA and xwOBA. It’s hard to react to anything in fantasy leagues right now with either five days or 16 dyas left in the season depending on your league. But there you have it. Rough end of the year for Bryan Reynolds and Julio Rodriguez, but they’re both doing worse than they actually should be.
The other way:
Javier Sanoja had to be here, had to. And Alex Bregman hasn’t exactly earned this elite, elite couple of months he’s had.
That’s it for today’s notes!
