Rockies
Hunter Goodman
The underlying numbers mostly check out with Goodman. He hits the ball really hard, he gets it into the air, and he’s locked in to play a bunch for the Rockies while hitting in the 3-4 hole. As far as opportunity goes, few catchers have more of it.
Maybe I’m not being properly analytical here, but I just don’t want to invest any significant portion of my draft capital into a Rockies player. Especially not one with one season of fantasy usefulness under his belt and a high strikeout rate. That stuff isn’t out of control with him (83% Zone Contact%), but it shouldn’t be a surprise if Goodman’s K% comes up to 28% or so this year, and that makes it tough to produce.
The other weird part last year was that his road splits were very strong. Is that something that’s repeatable? I don’t think so. The rest of the team was pretty much useless on the road, but Goodman was actually better.
There are enough questions for me to just leave Goodman for someone else this year. There is no shortage of solid catcher bats on the board this year.
Diamondbacks
There’s a case for just fading this team outright this year. It’s a pretty ugly team context right now. Two of their main bats from the beginning of last year (Naylor and Suarez) are gone, and the only addition they made offensively this offseason was the corpse of Nolan Arenado.
