A few popular streamers got absolutely smacked yesterday, so good morning to you if you fell victim!
Chris Paddack: 3.1 IP, 6 H, 9 ER, 2 K, 4 BB
Kumar Rocker: 3 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 K, 2 BB
Luis Ortiz: 4.2 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 2 K, 4 BB
I doubt anybody streamed in Ortiz, but Paddack (vs. CWS) and Rocker (vs. CIN) were certainly added for their two-start weeks.
I had interest in Rocker, so that wasn’t great to see.
The slider put up an elite 25% SwStr%, but that’s the end of the good news, because it got taken out of the ballpark and hit hard other times, piling up a .521 xwOBA against it. The four-seamer was awful with a 4.3% SwStr% and the .591 xwOBA. He got pounded.
Fly ball pitchers throwing fastballs and sliders in Cincinnati will always be risky. Those are two pitches that are pretty easy to get into the air, and you don’t want to allow balls in the air in that ballpark.
I don’t think we just chalk this one to bad luck, though. It seems likely that Rocker doesn’t have great command of his stuff. He’s now given up 19 hits in his 14.2 MLB innings with three homers allowed. The stuff is there, and the walks haven’t been out of control (11%), so it seems like he’s just throwing pitches where guys can hit them. That works fine against minor league hitters as long as the stuff is good enough, but you can’t get away with it at the big league level.
It’s clearly too soon to give up on Rocker long-term, but it wasn’t a good start to this 2025 season. Rangers fans can’t be feeling great about this young duo in Leiter and Rocker so far, but we’ll keep a close eye on both guys while they’re in the Major League rotation.
Chris Paddack is just not a good pitcher, and it’s a shame that he has a spot over Zebby Matthews and David Festa. I think it will take several more blow-ups from Paddack to get him to lose his job; the Twins want innings from the guy for one reason or another. But it won’t be too long before Matthews and/or Festa get a shot in the bigs, and we should be ready to add them quickly when that happens.
Brady Singer had a fantastic outing in his Reds debut.
7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 8 K, 2 BB, 16.3% SwStr%, 46.7% Strike%, 38% Ball%
Those aren’t the greatest strike and ball rates, but the whiffs were there and he cruised through seven innings on just 92 pitches.
I would not be getting too excited about Singer. He’s fooled us many times, and he always goes back to being pretty mediocre.
Here’s how that pitch mix compared to last season:
Pitch: 2024 Usage → 2025 Usage
SI: 41% → 38%
SL: 40% → 22%
FF: 11% → 30%
ST: 5% → 4%
CH: 2% → 0%
FC: 0% → 5%
He went fastball crazy. That is not generally a recipe for getting more whiffs. The whiffs typically come on the slider, but it worked out for him yesterday. It is interesting to see him using more four-seamers. If he can pair those two together with about even usage and tunnel them well, he could add some strikeouts with deception. But I don’t know. I don’t want to get too far into the weeds here, I’m not adding Singer right now.
Jackson Jobe made his season debut:
4 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 K, 4 BB, 12.7% SwStr%, 45.6% Strike%, 39.2% Ball%
That’s not good! He did not throw the four-seamer for strikes.
The cutter was pretty sweet, so there’s that. The pitch mix is enticing. It’s rare to find a guy with 5-6 different pitches and big fastball velocity to go with it. But it takes more than just having the pitches to have success. Jobe’s numbers have been pretty unimpressive since last season, and this wasn’t a good first step for him. If you have him, I’d say hold him for 2-3 more starts and see where he’s at, but my hopes aren’t very high for the guy right now.
We got a look at Kyle Hart. He returned from pitching overseas and did okay.
5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB, 12.5% SwStr%, 46.2% Strike%, 36.2% Ball%
The guy was hiding fastballs, and you never like to see that from a starter. I don’t think you’re going to have great results as a starter throwing sweepers and changeup as your primary pitches. And we see why he was hiding the fastballs, neither looks very good. But hey, he cashed a strikeout prop for us!
David Peterson showed out in his return to the Mets rotation:
6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 3 BB, 12.4% SwStr%, 49.4% Strike%, 36% Ball%
This is what you’re supposed to do when facing the Marlins. They essentially have a AAA lineup, and Peterson took advantage.
Discouraging whiffs, and you can see that he really does not have a useful fastball. I think he’s best used as a reliever, and there are going to be more bad starts than good ones from him, I think. But he’s a viable streamer.
Kris Bubic was great.
6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 8 K, 2 BB, 15.8% SwStr%, 54.7% Strike%, 31.6% Ball%
The breakdown:
It’s a lower-velo fastball, but it does come from the left side. Here’s this box and whisper plot that I made last year to show velocity distributions compared with the effective velo:
The effective velocity takes into account release points. We don’t see a boost on Bubic. To just show you someone who does get a huge boost in effective velo, here’s what it looks like for Bailey Ober:
But anyways, Bubic located the four-seamer very well (25% Ball%, 67% Strike%), and got a ton of whiffs on it as well at a 23% SwStr%. The sweeper was also in the zone a bunch, and hitters just couldn’t do anything with any of his pitches.
I doubt you have yourself a fantasy stud here, but he was an interesting SP going into the season. Many people were interested in him, so I think he’s certainly worth the speculative add right now if he’s available. He could be one of those breakout SPs we’re looking for.
I suppose I have to give Martin Perez a hat tip:
6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 9 K, 3 BB
But I don’t know how that happened because he went for a horrible 42% Ball%. I guess he was effectively wild, as they say.
Two things to point out:
He posted a 5.08 SIERA in 2023 and a 4.64 mark last year
He’s wearing a hoodie in his official picture
It’s cold in Chicago, I guess.
Anyways, if you’re a veteran fantasy baseball player, you’re not moved by anything Martin Perez does. But if you’re new here, this is an important lesson to learn. Do not touch Martin Perez. He’s not suddenly good.
Drew Rasmussen threw five scoreless and got the easy win against Pittsburgh, but the other numbers are kind of pissing me off.
An 8.6% SwStr% and 34% Ball% is not what I expected from the guy. But I guess he got it done. The Pirates couldn’t hit his pitches, so that’s a good thing.
The pitch mix is unique. He mostly throws fastballs, but he has those three different variations. This is what he was doing last year from the bullpen as well when he posted a 15% SwStr% and a 32% Ball%. He was throwing harder then (97.4mph on the fours-eamer, that was down to 95.5 last night). It is possible that his K% won’t be great because of all of this. You don’t see a lot of high strikeout rates from guys throwing a ton of four-seamers, sinkers, and cutters. But I still think you start Rasmussen while he’s healthy, obviously. I’m pretty invested in the guy. I guess that means I won’t be the most fair judge of him, but whatever this is my freaking blog I can do what I want.
One more - Cristopher Sanchez started his season on a high note.
5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 7 K, 2 BB
The changeup was elite as usual, and the sinker generated another 60%+ ground ball rate. He’s a great pitcher, what more can we say.
Shifting to offense, now! My recommended DFS stack last night was the Cubs against Joey Estes in Sacramento. And they scored 18 runs, so… shout out to me! Carson Kelly, of all people, went 4/4 with 5 RBI and 46 fantasy points!
Things were so bad for the Athletics that Colin Rea got a plate appearance. Kyle Tucker is off to a bang-up start to his Cubs career. He has hit three homers already with a .323/.400/.742 slash line.
It will be interesting to see how games in this ballpark go. It’s going to take a long time for us to have reliable park factors, but for now I think it’s fair to consider it a hitters ballpark.
I’ve gotta wrap it up. I think I’ll just keep the daily notes totally free for awhile, and maybe all year. More automated stuff is showing up today, and you’ll get more and more popping up as we get more data. Have a great Tuesday!

How would you rank:
12 team head to head categories (QS in place of wins)
Bowden Francis
Verlander
Bassit
Jobe
I have the top 3 but considering dropping one for Jobe. I think the first 3 could all be some boring innings eaters for me, but the potential of Jobe clicking is tempting.
