It’s still really hard to believe he’s suddenly good. But he’s been very good in three starts. He hasn’t faced a tough offense yet, you could say, but the pitch mix is deep and multiple things are working for the guy.
As for Mick Abel, he went for a 52.9% Strike% yesterday in six scoreless innings.
He’s been hit very hard, and he’s another one of these Twins dudes giving up a bunch of fly balls. But the SwStr% is up to 13.3% with a decent 35.4% Ball%.
He will get the Red Sox next, and then after that, probably at the Mets. I think the fly ball rate is going to catch up to him. I wouldn’t be thrilled to pick the guy back up. But THE STUFF though! He has one of the game’s highest Stuff+ four-seamers. That’s not all that meaningful, but it’s not all that meaningless, either.
FOUR SEAM FASTBALL STUFF+ LEADERS
He has a top ten four-seamer among SPs by this measure. If you combine all of his pitches and do Stuff+ overall, he’s still in the top 15:
I think it’s clear that he’ll have some very good starts and a good strikeout rate. But I do think he’ll run into a not-so-great ERA because of the home runs he’s going to give up. It’s pretty much the same story with every Twins pitcher.
