I was up early to get everything done so the notes didn’t bleed too much into my Saturday morning, but I had to fight the projection model for like half an hour. I won’t get into it, but now it’s 8:30 and the whole family is up and at ‘em, so I don’t think I can write extensively here.
Jacob deGrom doesn’t seem to have the elite command he’s always had. He made it through just four innings yesterday and had a very rare poor 4:4 K:BB.
The season K% is now at 21% with a 9.5% BB%. The good news is the SwStr% and Ball% are still very good (17.8% SwStr% and 33.1%).
I think he’ll be fine. He’s way above the line on the SwStr% vs. K% plot.
Have to talk about David Festa in the short time I have.
64 pitches, 4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 R, 4 K, 1 BB, 14.1% SwStr%, 35.9% Ball%
Pretty good numbers. It was surprising they yanked him at 64 pitches, though. I can’t say I’m confident that he’ll remain in the Twins big league rotation, but if you have him, I’d hold him until it’s clear what they’re doing.
My home leaguemates hate when I pump up my own guys in the daily notes, so I’m here to tell you that Yoshinobu Yamamoto is the man.
DAZZLING numbers so far. I ended up with him and Roki Sasaki in the home league (in addition to keeping Ohtani), so you could say I’m pretty well-versed in Japanese culture.
That’s pretty wild that we were fighting a war with Japan all of 60 years ago, dropping insanely deadly bombs on each other, and now we’re just boyz. I read that Malcolm Gladwell book about the a-bomb a few years ago. Brutal stuff.
It would be nice if war didn’t exist. But I think we’re stuck with it.
ANYWAYS.
It is still walk city in MLB this year. The league BB% is 9.4%, that’s more than a point above what it usually is. Is there something to that? Probably not. If we just look at the first three weeks of last year, the league BB% was 9.0%. It was a bit higher than average in April 2023 as well. I suppose it just takes pitchers some time to get the full feel back. Here are some of those guys pulling up the league walk rate:
Alright I brought my computer over to the in-laws’s house. They live like 500 feet away from us so we come over here every Saturday morning and the kids get donuts. So I can keep chugging away at these daily notes.
The pitchers with the most innings with no walks:
Joe Ryan 17
Kyle Freeland 19
Matthew Liberatore 12.1
Those are the only three with 2+ starts and no walks. You have to love Joe Ryan, don’t you? He’s another member of my home league team. My pitching has been marvelous, but unfortunately the ole’ offense is hitting .208 so far.
Robbie Ray got a four-inning win because they called the game after six. He had seven strikeouts in those innings, so that was a positive sign. But he walked four more. He’ll probably improve on that front, but he could also be regressing back to the guy he was prior to that Toronto breakout. Remember that old Robbie Ray? It was either a strikeout or a walk, and he’d almost never get past the fifth inning.
How about Jung Hoo Lee!
52 PA, .340/.404/.596, 1 HR, 3 SB, 13.5% K%, 9.6% BB%
The stolen base attempt rate is up to 25%. He was one of our MLB DW guys during draft season, so I have to make sure I write about him doing well while he’s doing well.
The projections have really been starting to get into games in Sacramento. Pete Alonso hit another bomb there last night. There have been 21 homers hit in seven games in that ballpark. That’s the third most per game:
The Angels stadium is buoyed by Mike Trout doing his normal things while healthy:
.208/.322/.604, 6 HR, 15% K%, 14% BB%, 1 SB
He’s shown the willingness to run a little bit. The batting average hasn’t always been the best thing from him, but you know you’re going to get a buttload of homers from the guy. Enjoy it while it lasts!
Tommy Edman predictably hit another one last night. He absolutely smashes lefties, and showed that again last night. He’s hitting .259/.290/.603 with six homers this year. The K% is great as usual at 13%. He’s not taking any walks (3%), so that has kept the OBP down. I can’t imagine he keeps hitting homers at this rate, but he’s a must-own guy in fantasy leagues I’d have to say.
It wasn’t great stuff from Kris Bubic, but it was still a 15.2% SwStr% and a 29% Ball%. Those are great marks, and he did get to the quality start threshold.
He is now at 15.7% SwStr% and a 31% Ball%. I’m pretty convinced. He has double-digit SwStr% on four pitches and a great 52% Strike% overall.
Alright that’ll have to do it. Let’s have a day!
