I figure that it’s a decent time to take a look at MAX EV. Between 50-100 balls in play, you can start getting some idea of which guys have added EV this year. There’s plenty of randomness involved, but it might lead us to something useful.
So, which hitters have beaten their previous career max EVs by a significant margin already this year? There are nine players who have cleared their previous max (requiring at least 150 BIP in the old sample) by at least one full mile per hour.
And here we arrive at Angel Martinez, who I wanted to talk about specifically. And that’s kinda why I did this. He’s a 2B/OF eligible player on most sites. He’s been hitting well and has ended up at the top of the Guardians lineup recently.
The line: .319/.385/.511, 2 HR, 11% K%, 6% BB%, 4 SB, 27% Attempt%
There are nine players with 2+ HR, 2+ SB, and a batting average above .300 so far. Martinez is one of them.
He played 139 MLB games last year with a .224/.269/.359 slash line, but did add 11 homers and eight steals. So he had a little bit of the HR+SB thing going on.
