Tyler Mahle has outdone Jacob deGrom in their returns to the Rangers rotation. He really shined last night.
6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 9 K, 2 BB, 19.4% SwStr%, 53.8% Strike%, 34.4% Ball%
He now has a 28% K%, a 12% BB%, a 14.8% SwStr%, and a 36.3% Ball% in four starts. It’s surprising, to say the least. His four-seamer has a 17.8% SwStr% despite being at just 91.9mph on average.
I’m having some trouble believing in that fastball performance. But who knows, maybe he has some of that special sauce in there with the delivery or the spin or something that makes it really tough to handle.
The splitter looks like a Gausman splitter to me. You typically see splitters that aren’t thrown in the strike zone very much and are just used to try to get chases. But Mahle has a very high 49% Strike% on it. He’s thrown that splitter in the zone 57% of the time. The league zone rate on splitters is 38%.
I’m not saying that’s bad, it’s just different.
Mahle also has a 36% GB% and yet has not allowed a homer yet. The high strikeout rate will help with that, but there’s no doubt there’s been some over-performance here.
All of that aside, I’d say Mahle should be owned in most all league types. He’s never been a truly awful pitcher, and he’s shown some signs of greatness in the past. We have just all forgotten about that because he’s been out for so long.
Expect some bad starts along the way, and expect that K% to come down at least a few points. But Mahle is clearly an MLB talent, and he’s someone to consider if you’re hurting at SP right now.
The league walk rate is still at 9.1%. That’s 0.9 points above last year. This is despite a league-wide zone rate of 50% this year, which is up a tad from last eyar at 49.6%. So what’s going on? I’m always in search of a grand conspiracy. It’s been too long since 2020, I need to get some of that back.
So I looked at the rate of balls being called on pitches in the strike zone. In 2024, 11.9% of pitches in the strike zone not swung at were called balls. This year, it’s 13.9%.
To flip that around, last year 5.95% of pitches out of the strike zone not swung at were called strikes. This year, it’s 4.99%. So that’s down a point.
The umps are to blame! Major League Baseball, in a dark, smoky room, decided this winter that what they need to fatten their calves is MORE WALKS. Or maybe just fewer strikeouts. Or maybe this is just the result of us being less than one month into the season.
Or maybe the challenge system in spring training shook these umpires up. I’d imagine it’s pretty embarassing for them to ring a dude up with the full-out double-fisty punch-action, only for some robot to be like “no”. That works both ways, but I do think it’s probably more embarassing for the hitter to be vindicated on his challenge than the pitcher. I mean the hitter is right in your face, the pitcher is 61 feet away. I think human nature is that when you have to offend someone, offend someone further away from you.
So that’s it, I’ve solved it. What do we do about it? For starters, you gambling bros should maybe stop listening to my model when it tells you to take the “under” on a walks prop. That recommendations have been losers, so far down 1.95 units on 61 bets. When it says over, the model is up 2.92 units on 24 bets. Everything in the projection world eventually turns to gambling. Sad.
Walker Buehler was not good. And that was after one start last week when he was really good. Here’s the season update for him:
He got the win, so that’s always nice. But the 19% K% is a bad sign. He has not had strikeout stuff since returning from these injuries. The most alarming number I can give you is that his four-seamer has a 3.3% SwStr% on 91 pitches. You can’t have much success with a bad fastball, especially when you’re early career success was mostly about that great four-seamer.
Here are your four-seamers thrown at least 80 times with a SwStr% under 5%.
It’s still too early to judge that. But it’s not a good beginning! And it is especially bad news for Buehler, because this has been the main issue since last year. I’d be selling Buehler (and Jobe, Jobe too).
Jeffrey Springs sucked against the White Sox. And nobody should suck against the White Sox. That’s unforgivable.
Springs first start: 20.5% SwStr%, 34% Ball%, .343 xwOBA, .150 SLG
Springs since then: 10.8% SwStr%, 39% Ball%, .342 xwOBA, .456 SLG
He is another guy with a poor fastball (7.6% SwStr% this year, 19% GB%, 90.3mph). I’d say you can cut him in a 10 or 12-team league, provided there is someone available with upside.
Any hope I still had for Sean Burke is now fully reomved. He has a 13% K%, an 11.4% SwStr%, a 38% Ball%, and a .461 xwOBA allowed this year. Awful.
Nick Lodolo had a season-best 12.2% SwStr% yesterday (still not good), but had his worst start of the year by far.
4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 6 SO, 1 BB, 2 HR
But what are you going to do when facing the great Dylan Moore in Cincinnati? He was cooked from the beginning.
Mariners at home, 2024-2025: .210/.301/.355, 28.2% K%
Mariners on road, 2024-2025: .235/.315/.393, 24.9% K%
The M’s when they leave Seattle:
I tweeted about Ben Rice yesterday:
I love saying negative things about New York sports teams. They always blow up and people start flaming me over and over again. And what better do those New Yorkers have to do with their time? Go outside and step in poop and get high with second-hand marijuana smoke?
My disdain for cities grows every year. It makes me so happy.
I’m not even going to talk about the tweet. I’m just going to say this.
Ben Rice before the tweet: .300/.417/.680, 1.097 OPS
Ben Rice after the tweet: .000/.000/.000, 0.000 OPS
The MLB DW curse is fully on. I mean, just look at what I did to Kyren Paris:
Before the tweet: .429/.538/.952, 1.491 OPS
After the tweet: .300/.364/.650, 1.014 OPS
Crap.
But hey, over his last three games he’s at .200/.273/.200 with no homers and a 46% K%. So let’s just re-jigger the time frame so things looks good for me.
Willson Contreras is waking up, baby, check it out!
He smacked a dinger on Sunday. Since then, he’s 1/8 with no extra base hits. BUT WAIT, he hasn’t struck out! In fact, he hasn’t struck out since April 9th. Let’s go baby, here he comes! Buy-low-fo-sho.
I have to go, but I will leave you with a list of the hitters that have xwOBA - wOBA differentials greater than 70 points in at least 70 PAs.
That makes me feel really warm and fuzzy inside, because my home league team has four of those guys.
