We had a delay in the savant data coming through, and it’s WEDNESDAY which is a busy day for me, so we’ll have to cruise through it this morning.
If I told you a few months ago that we’d have a 1-0 Coors Field game pitched by Randy Vasquez and Chase Dollander, you might not believe me.
Dollander: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 9 SO, 1 BB, 27 fantasy points
Vasquez: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 5 SO, 0 BB, 28 fantasy points
Chase Dollander is for sure a must-start on the road now. I’d go out and get him. He lines up for a start/bulk outing in Cincinnati next week. I guess this thing with him following an opener kinda sucks for quality starts, and wins are always pretty tough to come by with the Rockies, but Dollander now has this going on:
30.8% K%
6.7% BB%
24% K-BB%
15.6% SwStr%
33.5% Ball%
53% GB%
That’s a 3.18 JA ERA, which is eighth-best in baseball for pitchers who have thrown at least 350 pitches.
We should mention to people who aren’t as familiar with Dollander that this isn’t all that surprising. Dollander was a first round pick in the 2023 draft.
That draft went:
Paul Skenes
Dylan Crews
Max Clark
Wyatt Langford
Walker Jenkins
Jacob Wilson
Rhett Lowder
Blake Mitchell
Chase Dollander
Noble Meyer
Kinda weird that the Reds would go with Lowder over Dollander given the massive stuff difference, but they probably know how to run a baseball team better than me.
Dollander has a 99mph fastball and a good slider. This year, he’s piled on some extra pitches and has seemingly improved everything:
A 62% Strike% on 154 four-seamers. I’ve talked about this stat a lot with Emerson Hancock this year, so you’re familiar with the fact that it’s a very very good thing to see.
FOUR-SEAM FASTBALL STRIKE% LEADERS
Emerson Hancock 65%
Mick Abel 62%
Mason Montgomery 62%
Chase Dollander 62%
Logan Gilbert 59%
Max Scherzer 59%
Brad Lord 59%
Cam Schlittler 59%
Ryan Weathers 58%
Kevin Gausman 58%
We like that a lot. However, it should be noted that Coors Field crushes fastballs, too. Everything about pitching is harder in Coors Field.
You pick up Dollander now in all leagues, without a doubt. But do you start him next time he pitches at home? PROBABLY, but it’s not a slam dunk.
It’s this tough situation we have. We haven’t seen a useful fantasy pitcher on the Rockies since that few month span from German Marquez in 2017 or 2018. And that can make you think it’s impossible. But you have to realize that the Rockies haven’t had any good pitchers. There haven’t been any good test cases. Dollander is a good test case, and he failed it last year. Through two Coors Field outings this year, he’s passed the test.
What I wouldn’t do is break my FAAB bank for the guy.
It would’ve been easy to write Randy Vasquez off again if he got tanked last night, but seven scoreless in Coors is pretty impressive.
He is still chilling here with a 19% K-BB% and a 3.01 JA SIERA. He’ll get matchups with the Cubs and White Sox next.
More pitcher data:
Chase Burns: A bit inefficient, but 15 whiffs, a 15.5% SwStr%, and a 35.1% Ball%. 27% K%, 9.9% BB%, 15.6% SwStr% this year, that’s a must-start pitcher. He’s also tuned up the GB% to 49%, which is surprising since he’s 57% four-seamer and 36% slider. But the slider has a 64% GB% this year. I don’t think that keeps up, but if he could keep the GB% around the mid-40s, that could be a big help.
Parker Messick: Not the best, but his fastball was up 1mph from his previous starts this year.
Kyle Harrison: The pitch count was predictably low after he had a little injury thing that pushed him back. They’ve been pretty quick to pull him even in normal situations. And his command was junk this time with a 46% Ball%. It’s a narrow road to fantasy usefulness for Harrison, but he’ll have some big outings this year, I’m pretty confident about that.
Landen Roupp: Five walks and a 45% Ball%. Maybe being too careful with the Dodgers lineup? But it worked! The Giants won, he won, and he gave up just one run on one hit.
Jesus Luzardo: He was actually pretty bad in this one with a 40% Ball% and a 3:4 K:BB. But he gave up just one earned run. So he gives up a dozen earned runs when he’s actually looking good under the hood, and survives when he looks bad under the hood. I’d be trying to buy low again this week, you might have an easier time with it now after a truly poor outing.
Nolan McLean: He’s very good. The K-BB% is up to 26.3% K-BB% with a 45% GB% and a tiny little .223 xwOBA allowed. Pitch movement is a very good thing.
Chris Paddack: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 5 ER… that experiment has to end soon in favor of Braxton Garrett / Robby Snelling / Thomas White. Probably in that order, by the way. We don’t expect White to see the MLB any time soon. But we do think we’ll get Garrett and Snelling up here in the next few weeks.
A couple other guys from lower on the list:
Shota Imanaga: Did not have whiffs in this one. Just one strikeout in seven innings, but one run on three hits.
Luis Gil: Lost 1.3mph on his fastabll, got four whiffs, a 2:3 K:BB, but.. 6.1 shutout innings. The Red Sox have been dreadful.
Connelly Early: Just hasn’t been that good. A 10.3% K-BB%, a 45.9% Strike%, a 39.1% Ball%. Pitching in the MLB is way harder than he made it look in his handful of outings last year.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 7 SO, 2 BB. Good outing again, he’s very tough to score a bunch of runs off of, but his fastball was down 0.7mph, and it’s down almost one mile per hour this year compared to last. He has just a 23% K% this year now. It’s all made well by a 4.1% BB% and a .304 xwOBA driven by the splitter. I do think you’ll eventually get some sort of phantom IL stint for him as they limit these dudes and make sure they’re geared up for October. I think I’d trade Yamamoto if I had him.
Kris Bubic: Eight whiffs on 100 pitches with a 3:3 K:BB against the Orioles. He’s never been a command stud, so you’ll get some up-and-down with him.
Shane Baz: Gave up eight hits and four runs on a 4:2 K:BB on 99 pitches. He just doesn’t have strikeout stuff despite the fastball velo being there and his curveball being very good by some stuff models. He’s bad!
BOTTOM FIVE OPS TEAMS:
Mets .619
Giants .650
Red Sox .653
Royals .655
Reds .655
People are asking if the White Sox shouldn’t be considered a team to stream against after this barrage of homers from Murakami and Montgomery. But the truth is that they’re slashing .210/.304/.356 as a team with a 25.2% K%. They have the seventh-lowest OPS and the third-highest K%. And they’re fourth-worst in run scoring, so what are we talking about exactly?
The SUPER ULTRA MEGA HOT HITTERS weren’t working until yesterday, my code was still looking back to 2025 - WHOOPS!
But they’re fixed now:
Jose Ramirez - 0.484 xwOBA, 17.1% Brl%, 84.8% Contact%, 24.5% Chase%, 13.1% K%
Kevin McGonigle - 0.457 xwOBA, 11.6% Brl%, 90.2% Contact%, 18.2% Chase%, 10.7% K%
Matt Olson - 0.401 xwOBA, 19.5% Brl%, 78.8% Contact%, 20.6% Chase%, 19.7% K%
Mike Trout - 0.485 xwOBA, 20.9% Brl%, 79.4% Contact%, 18.8% Chase%, 15.9% K%
Taylor Ward - 0.385 xwOBA, 10.6% Brl%, 80.0% Contact%, 14.5% Chase%, 14.7% K%
