League stats update:

The SB success rate has fallen under 80% for the first time this year. That’s still a huge climb from the steady 75-76% we have seen in the past, but it’s possible that will continue to fall as pitchers/catchers figure out ways to counteract some of their disadvantages.

The home run rate has also fallen down to close to where it was last year, although that still probably means homers are going to go up since we’re comparing colder weather games with last year’s full season. The big thing I notice there is that the walk rate continues above 9%. I guess it makes sense that pitchers would throw more balls since they’re often rushed by the clock - but I’m pretty surprised the walk rate is up a full point early on.

The pitcher standouts were Ohtani and Gallen - ho-hum, but right behind them were some intersting names. Matz, Smyly, Sears and Kopech all went above 16 whiffs.

Sears had 11 strikeouts. I actually didn’t completely hate him last year as he showed some good signs.

The pitch mix so far makes him look like an above-average pitcher, but that’s about as nice as I can be.

Giving up tons of fly balls on the four-seamer but also getting a bunch of whiffs (comparatively). The velo is low though, but he is one of these lefties that maybe just hides the ball very well and that explains the elevated whiff rate on the fastball.

You always have to be skeptical of a player who doesn’t even show up as the main result when you google their name.

I mean my name is Jon Anderson so I never thought I would be anywhere near the front page of a search, but JP Sears is a pretty unique name and this guy is getting dunked on by that-looking dude. Embarassing!

But I don’t think we should write him off. Could Sears be useful for fantasy this season?

Curtis Crabtree on Twitter: "J.P. Crawford: "You want to be that guy that breaks that curse, or breaks the bad vibes over here. You want to be remembered to be a legend

Drew Smyly stole the show just dominating the Dodgers, but it’s Drew Smyly. He’s capable of this kind of thing every once in awhile but you shouldn’t get excited about the guy. He debuted in the Majors almost before I could legally drink and therefore I’m not going to buy into any kind of “breakout”.

Joey Gallo hit another bomb, that now gives him five in 32 PA. That’s the best home run rate in the league.

HR/PA Leaders

  1. Gallo 6.4

  2. Burger 7.8

  3. Wisdom 8.4

  4. Duvall 9.3

  5. Alonso 9.3

  6. Muncy 9.9

  7. Suwinski 10.4

  8. Cordero 10.5

  9. Thompson 10.8

  10. B Lowe 11.0

Gallo has been around for too long to convince me he’s changed his spots, but the change of scenery is a thing that maybe kind of can make some kind of difference? I don’t know. I’m skeptical but the K% is 28% right now and if that stays anywhere near 30% the home runs should be enough to make him relevant in some leagues.

Willson Contreras has shook off his slow start and is now a MAGIC FORMULA QUALIFIER, with a Brl% of 15% and a K% of 17% - good to see for him.

The Pirates won again and if it keeps happening this is just going to become a Pirates blog.

I might just keep the hot hitter tracker free because the people love it and I don’t particularly think it’s valuable information, so I don’t care who all out there knows it. There are now four Pirates on it out of the nine names, that’s #representation right there. Even Austin Hedges is showing up! What a crazy world.

Check that out below, and if you’re a believer in hot you have to pick up Austin Hedges right now or you’re a no good lying hypocrite.

Robbie Tenerowicz is your new minor league OPS leaders (although it leaves off the players that are currently in the Major Leagues). He seems like a nice guy:

Robbie Tenerowicz - Baseball - California Golden Bears Athletics

Last year I talked a lot on here about JAKE SLAUGHTER and his dad ended up following me on Twitter, so that’s an avenue I want to expand. I want to have all of the prospects’ dads following me on Twitter and then maybe someday one of them will become a big shot in the Majors and their family will hire me as their special statistical council.

Mr. Tenerowicz, I ask you once again for your financial support.

Hey, it could happen.

I gave you a lot here for a Saturday - I expect many thanks & laudulations!
