I am in the fight of my life against the dandelions. They are freaking relentless this time of year. For the last five days I have filled up a plastic bag with these things. I didn’t see any this morning, but I just know right now they’re on the way up. They were hiding from me this morning, and as soon as they saw me go back inside I know they all said “okay he’s gone let’s grow”.
So I’ll be out there again with my Grampa’s Weeder fighting another round.
Grampa’s Weeder is the officially unofficial lawn care tool of MLB Data Warehouse, buy one today!
Additionally, things are going so well here at MLB DW, that I was empowered to email a lawn care service this morning. These teenage kids in the neighborhood started a lawn care service and they have this deal where you give them $400 for the year and they’ll fertilize and do weed control on your yard a handful of times during the year. Both of my next door neighbors use them, and their yards look way better than mine, so I figured that it’s time.
We’ve got some spotlighting to do!
Shout out to me and Stu, who both hyped up Olson yesterday morning. We were both pretty nervous about recommending an inconsistent SP against the Padres, but we ended up looking like GENIUSES.
7.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 7 SO, 1 BB, 20% SwStr%
We have been talking a lot about the fastball hiding of Max Meyer and Landen Roupp lately, but we can’t forget about the original fastball hider! Olson isn’t the first, but we have been talking about that with him for a few years now. The guy does not have a good fastball, but he has two devastating secondaries. And he used them yesterday.
That’s abut what he’s been doing this year. He has split things very evenly between the slider (27%), changeup (26%), and sinker (26%), with four-seamers (18%) and curveballs (4%) mixed in less commonly.
The ERA is now at 3.29 with a 1.24 WHIP. The 12.3% K-BB% isn’t very good, and this was just the second time he cleared five innings.
I don’t think Olson is a ten-team league guy. But he is a guy who can dominate if the changeup and slider are both on the money and he escapes without the fastball getting hit too hard.
I think Heaney sees a path to getting traded to a playoff team, because he is pitching marvelously with the Pirates.
That’s a 1.72 ERA with a 0.77 WHIP. And four of those six earnies were on one swing from Elly De La Cruz on a pretty decent pitch.
The 1.72 ERA is largely fake, of course, but the 3.08 SIERA is very strong (#23 in the league).
The history with Heaney makes us pretty sure that this will fall apart soon, but he has improved [so far] everywhere you’d like him to.
The SwStr% is 13.3% and the Ball% is 33.4%. So that’s an MFQ qualifier. I think we can buy into Heaney a bit.
SP SIERA Leaders
He has now gone seven innings in two straight outings and has lowered the season ERA to 3.54 on a 1.14 WHIP. So that’s been nice for an Orioles pitching staff desperately in need of some decent innings.
However, you see that pitiful 8% K% there. You’d think that would be the lowest in the league, but Antonio Senzatela (7.9% K%) exists.
I don’t think there’s a fantasy baseball case to be made for Sugano, but I did want to touch on him just so we can figure out what to expect for other purposes. Streaming, DFS, betting, whatever.
The SwStr% is at 7.2%. That is better than Logan Allen, Jose Quintana, Miles Mikolas, and Randy Vasquez.
To have any hope for a guy with this little strikeout ability, you need ground balls. Or to play in a stadium where the outfield wall is 600 feet away.
The 47% GB% is not low, but it’s nowhere near the elite level you’d want it to be at. It’s up to 53% in the last two starts, but he’s given up four homers in those two. So he’s been very lucky there weren’t more guys on base.
I did not know what to project for that guy in the model since he had never pitched in the minors. But I think we’re looking at a 16-17% K% and an 8-9% BB%. That’s a very bad combination.
PCA homered and stole two bags yesterday to lead the day in fantasy points. He’s having a pretty monstrous season so far:
.294/.339/.549, 5 HR, 10 SB, 23.4% K%, 5.4% BB%
He’s fifth in the league in scoring (Tucker, Judge, Carroll, Tatis Jr.). The exit velocity is up (103.1 EV90, which still isn’t great, but it’s high enough to believe that the guy can hit some dingers). The contact rate is a very nice 78%, and that should turn into a solid K% when paired with his extremely high swing rate (60%).
You’re probably going to have some slumps for the guy. As I said already, he doesn’t crush the ball off the bat, and he’s one of those types that just likes to swing at everything. And when you swing at everything, you mishit a bunch of balls. But that’s a fine trade-off if it means the K% is lower.
The playing time is set in stone with how great of a fielder he is, so I think you’re in for a pretty fantastic season from PCA. Good for you if you have him.
He shows up today on the “Magic Formula Qualifiers”! That is big news! Over his last 70 PAs:
.200/.268/.385, 21% K%, 14% Brl%, 3 HR
So that’s still not great. But he’s hitting barrels without a ton of strikeouts, so there’s reason for hope.
Don’t look now, but Tyler Soderstrom has gone a bit cold! Since the 16th:
.179/.226/.321, 32% K%, 6.5% BB%, 1 HR
Let’s cut the season in half for these five early-season standout first basemen.
Before April 12th:
Since April 12th:
They all still look pretty good to be honest. But as always, beware the hot start! As I’ve said many times, pretty much every player at some point will have a really nice two-week stretch. If that happens in the middle of the year, few people notice. But when it happens right at the beginning, everybody notices.
We’ll keep an eye on them, I’d certainly still be starting them all confidently right now.
Before we go, here are the SLG leaders from the last 12 days:
