I recorded a new podcast yesterday, going over the early season standouts from all of the AL east teams.
It’s been a long time I’ve added new stuff to the automated part of the daily notes. I want to keep adding on and refining that to make it better and better. Someone asked me to add recent bat speed comparisons, so I’ve done that. You will see the biggest L7 changes in bat speed using 75th percentile bat speed.
I’m not sure if that’s useful. Most of the time it probably just has to do with the kind of pitches these guys are seeing. There are many pitches and situations where you just can’t get a good swing at. Using 75th percentile negates some of that. Use this however you will.
If you’re real into the bat speed stuff, I have a full tab on the dashboard for it.
Here’s Rowdy trend:
More on that pitch type stuff, here is average bat speed by pitch location from right-handed hitters this year:
So you see that you get more bat speed down in and in. While it’s tuogher to get the bat speed when you’re reaching out and up. And that makes sense in your head if you just kinda think about swinging at pitches in those locations.
So, if a hitter gets a bunch of pitches down and in during a week, their average bat speed will probably tick up.
There are cases of bat speed being lost due to an injury, and you’ll probably pick up on a few of those cases throughout the year by studying the trends. However, it’s very hard to know what the cause is. So I won’t be paying much attention to it myself.
Let me know what else you might like added to the automated part of the notes.
It’s Friday, the best baseball day of the week. My daughter got a free ticket to the South Bend Cubs tonight because she learned to read (like a $12 value thanks reading rainbow!!!), so we’re heading over there tonight to see some A+ ball. But I’m committed to getting a nice slate preview out and playing three DFS lineups tonight.
But first, let’s look at yesterday.
Bryan Woo brought his season WHIP down to 0.97 with this line:
6 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 8 SO, 1 BB, 1 HR
He has been basically as advertised. The strikeouts aren’t phenomenal (23.6%), but he is fililng up the strike zone with quality pitches. He leads the league (for SP) in zone rate at 64.6%. 69.3% of his first pitches are in the strike zone, that’s behind just Colin Rea and Seth Lugo. His in-zone SwStr% is strong at 13.9%, and once again, few hitters are able to square him up with a .319 SLG generated all together.
Great stuff from Woo, it’s looking like a career year for him as long as he can stay healthy.
In-Zone SwStr% Leaders
Logan Gilbert 18.5%
Hunter Greene 18.0%
Luis L. Ortiz 17.3%
Tarik Sukbal 17.1%
Shota Imanaga 16.8%
Justin Verlander 16.7%
Zack Wheeler 146.5%
Cole Ragans 16.2%
Nick Pivetta 16.2%
Ryan Gusto 16.1%
Tyler Anderson got one strikeout but got through six innings for a quality start and a win. The Pirates have Oneil Cruz and then basically nobody else right now. You should be targeting them with any decent SP you can find.
Jacob deGrom once again was good but not deGrom-esque.
5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 0 BB, 14.5% SwStr%, 32.5% Ball%
Let’s update the pitch mix on the season:
Still a very strong 15% SwStr% + 34% Ball% combo. But you can see that hitters have been able to hit the four-seamer. And that isn’t surprising since he’s down below 97 with the pitch.
It’s a lot harder to hit a 96mph fastball than a 99mph fastball.
It’s probably a worthwhile trade-off for deGrom, but it’s a great reminder for us of my favorite Thomas Sowell quote, which I use in these daily notes quite often.
That quote is specifically about government policy. I guess you could argue that somebody like Mason Miller (the guy that generated most of those 102mph+ data points in the plot above) has solved pitching.
Mason Miller 2025
8 innings, 4 hits, 0 runs, 17 strikeouts, 1 walk
But in the deGrom scenario, it did seem to be a trade-off. You want a higher probably of staying healthy? Take some velo and movement off your pitches. Throw worse pitches. Or… go to the bullpen and be Mason Miller, I guess.
Five walks for Garrett Crochet! His K-BB% is now under 20%.
We also figured he’d regress some from 2024 to 2025. What he did last year didn’t make a ton of sense.
2024: 146 IP, 35.1% K%, 5.5% BB%
2025: 37 IP, 29.7% K%, 10.1% BB%
The good news is that he’s been very, very tough to hit.
That SwStr% is elite at 15% and the .220 SLG is incredibly low. That will have to come up a touch, but all things considered it’s safe to say Crochet is a top five arm still. The Red Sox have no hesitation on his usage, that’s for sure. He threw 110 pitches yesterday and now leads the league with 99.8 pitches per start.
Pitches Per Outing Leaders
Crochet 99.8
Wheeler 99.7
Severino 99.4
Gore 99.3
Skenes 99.2
Webb 97.2
Keller 97.0
Fried 97.0
Nola 97.0
Rodon 96.7
Chase Dollander isn’t getting whiffs even on the road, so I think I wasted 7% of my FAAB on him in MLB DW league. I was so hyped to get him, too. Shame on me.
4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 K, 2 BB, 7.6% SwStr%
He now has a 10.5% SwStr% on the year, and that is not at all what I expected. I really thought he would at least get whiffs with that 97+mph fastball. But no, the Rockies are incapable of having good players in any form or fashion.
Lowest Team Pitching K%

That will do it for the daily notes, I’m going to handle some real-life business and then shift my attention to tonight’s slate of games. Enjoy the notes!
