I spent $225 in FAAB on Payton Tolle in my OC last night. And that felt good because the runner-up was at $222. But it’s a logical fallacy of sorts. The fact that somebody else wanted to spend $222 does not mean that Tolle was worth $225. That’s 22.5% of my season FAAB, so if this guy isn’t very good the rest of the season, it was a bad move.

But that little psychological hit you from just barely beating someone else out makes you think you really did something good. I also got Connor Prielipp for $50, although I do sort of regret that one because I don’t really need the extra pitching. But the bids were way, way higher on Tolle. And that’s right, but some people got some really nice prices on Prielipp. He will pitch tonight.

I had a couple interesting conversations over the weekend and it seems to me that a lot of non-religious people think that religious people are religious just because it works for them. They see the personal benefits that come with belief in something bigger, and they think it’s good at the personal, individual level. But in their head it’s totally just about personal preference.

But I’ll tell you this, man. Real believers aren’t believers because it makes their life better. They’re real believers because they believe it. And in the case of Christianity, yeah it makes your life better. That’s a byproduct, not a primary driver. God came to earth as a man to show us His nature and to make a path for us to spend eternity with Him. That’s not just a fairy tale to me, I believe that’s something that really happened. And if I believe that really happened, it changes everything about life.

The man of the day on Sunday was Kyle Harrison.

→ 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 12 SO, 1 BB, 23 whiffs, 22.8% SwStr%, 65.3% Strike%

That’s a ridiculously good start. The fifth-best of the season per my start grading mechanism.

It was his first time over 90 pitches. With a little injury thing that happened, he had thrown just 76 and 72 pitches in his previous two. But everything was working in this one so he racked up 101 pitches to get through six brilliant innings.

The fastball has been fooling dudes left and right with a 17.3% SwStr% and a 60% Strike%. We’ve been checking four-seam fastball strike rate leaders a lot this year. He’s #3 on that:

He’s throwing that pitch 59% of the time, which is a lot. And it doesn’t have the velocity that just blows guys away. He could be a guy who hitters figure out after they see him a few times. And he doesn’t have a lot of stuff behind the fastball.

But 249 four-seamers with a 60% Strike% prove that it’s a very good pitch. I think he’s someone you want to own in 12-teamers, but he’s walking on slightly thin ice with this much reliance on a 95mph fastball.

We also saw Emerson Hancock and Chase Dollander in that screenshot above. They both pitched yesterday.

→ Dollander 7.0IP 5H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB
→ Hancock 6.0IP 7H 2ER 2R 4K 2BB

Dollander now sports a 30% K% on the year with a 2.25 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, and he’s even won three decisions. He will head back to Coors for a start against the Mets next weekend. It’s still hard to recommend a start this week since it’s one starts in Coors, but he has passed the test every outing since his first one now. The Rockies might have something.

Hancock has not looked nearly as good lately

Over his last three starts, he has a 19% K% with a 4% BB%, a 10.5% SwStr%, and a 35.4% Bal%. He’s throwing more sinkers (36%), which is kinda weird, but it’s limited damage with a 67% GB%. The whiffs going away is the big thing to me. Hitters might be figuring out the weird release point as they see him in real life and on tape. So I don’t think the full breakout on Hancock is truly on, but it was kinda nice while it lasted. I dropped him for Chase Dollander yesterday.

How about this Foster Griffin dude??

→ 7.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 8K 2BB

A 14.6% SwStr% with a 45.9% Strike% and a 36.5% Ball%. I’m not sure how that’s turned into a 2.67 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He doesn’t seem to be that good.

But I guess I do have a club. His pitch distribution:

  • FC 30%

  • FF 16%

  • ST 14%

  • CH 12%

  • SI 11%

  • FS 9%

  • CU 8%

So you don’t know what’s coming from him. And he’s struck out 28% of lefties with a 4.7% BB%. So he’s tough on them.

But it’s another situation where probably the league will adjust and figure him out once they’ve seen him. We shouldn’t expect much from Foster Griffin the rest of the way, but he’s a decent streamer in good spots.

More on pitching from yesterday:

The studs:

  • Chris Sale 6.0IP 1H 0ER 0R 9K 2BB

  • Nolan McLean 5.0IP 5H 1ER 2R 7K 2BB

All good there. Some other notable lines from Sunday:

  • Kyle Bradish 5.0IP 4H 3ER 3R 3K 4BB

    • Down to an 11% SwStr%, a 23% K%, and a 12.5% BB%. It is all pretty bad. Maybe the fantasy bro’s were just wrong all along in ranking Bradish in the top 30. I wouldn’t blame you for cutting this dude. He’s 30 innings in, which means he’s got like 100 left max, and it could be cut down significantly by a well timed phantom IL stint when the Orioles get sick of him sucking.

  • Seth Lugo 6.33IP 14H 7ER 7R 3K 1BB

    • Natural regression. The natty ‘gress! BABIP before yesterday: .244. BABIP after yesterday: .303. His ERA/WHIP before yesterday: 1.15/0.93. His ERA/WHIP after yesterday: 2.63/1.17. That’s a +0.24 in WHIP. Maybe you got lucky and benched him, or something.

  • Justin Wrobleski 6.0IP 4H 0ER 0R 6K 4BB

    • I told people to sell high during the Dodgers write-up last week in Division Dives, and I say it again! He has allowed five earned runs in 30 innings despite having 15 STIRKEOUTS and NINE WALKS. That’s a 5% K-BB%, but a 0.0 HR/9. His BABIP is .213 and he’s someone managed to avoid giving up a homer despite giving up 29 fly balls.

  • Luis Gil 4.0IP 5H 6ER 6R 0K 3BB

    • He is downright bad at pitching. 15 strikeouts, 15 walks in 24 innings (and that includes a start in the minors).

  • Landen Roupp 7.67IP 2H 3ER 3R 6K 2BB

    • Another start for Roupp where he doesn’t look great (10.7% SwStr%, 45.6% Strike%, 35.9% Ball%) but he gets through it and limits runs because of his groundballs and lack of hard contact. He’s now giving up just a .249 xwOBA and a .207 SLG. Eventually he’s going to have a start where he walks a couple guys and then gives up a bases-clearing double or home run or something like that and things will get bad. But clearly, he’s tough to square up. He’s given up 2, 7, 5, 1, 1, and 2 hits in his six starts so far.

  • Michael King 6.0IP 3H 2ER 2R 8K 1BB

    • His best start of the season. He’s thrown 105 and 106 pitches in his last two, so the volume is elite. It was only his second start below two walks, and he gave up two homers. But an 8:1 K:BB with just three hits allowed saved his day. The underlying stuff still doesn’t look impressive. I don’t think there’s SP1 upside with King, not even close, but you’ll probably be happy with him if he ends up your SP4.

That covers the pitching from yesterday, but I’m going to do something different for the rest of the notes today. I’m going to scroll down and infuse some comments and stuffs in the middle of the automated reports.

Shota Imanaga got hit around by the Dodgers but did have 17 more whiffs, so I wouldn’t be too discouraged by that. You can’t just be a fly ball pitcher against the Dodgers and expect things to go well.

2. Landen Roupp: 103 Pitches, 23 Outs, 4.48 POUT

9. Emerson Hancock: 94 Pitches, 18 Outs, 5.22 POUT
10. Chase Dollander: 105 Pitches, 20 Outs, 5.25 POUT

Sean Burke now has a 3.25 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP, a 19% K%, and a 5% BB%. That’s a 13.5 K-BB%, and he’s kept the ball in the yard (0.65 HR/9). Underrated!

Pretty funny that Seth Lugo still shows up here despite giving up 14 hits. He got 19 outs and gave up 14 hits and walked one. They just demand a full day’s work from the guy no matter what.

Velo Changes - Yesterday

Keider Montero’s SI velo (15 pitches) UP 1.7mph to 95.6
Chris Sale’s SI velo (14 pitches) UP 1.5mph to 95.5
Justin Wrobleski’s FF velo (57 pitches) DOWN -2.1mph to 92.9
Kumar Rocker’s FF velo (13 pitches) DOWN -2.1mph to 93.5

Chris Sale getting going! The guy is historically dominant in May. He looks ready to smash it again in May.

Pitch Mix Changes - Yesterday

Carmen Mlodzinski’s FS usage (28.4%) up 19.0 points
Emerson Hancock’s FC usage (14.9%) up 12.0 points
Jesse Scholtens’s FS usage (19.4%) up 12.2 points
Jose Quintana’s FF usage (24.7%) up 10.5 points
Justin Wrobleski’s FF usage (52.3%) up 11.5 points
Kodai Senga’s FF usage (60.0%) up 22.9 points
Kumar Rocker’s SL usage (36.9%) up 14.0 points
Max Meyer’s ST usage (27.3%) up 11.3 points

Simeon Woods Richardson’s FS usage (32.1%) up 17.5 points
Slade Cecconi’s FC usage (30.0%) up 21.5 points
Spencer Arrighetti’s FF usage (39.6%) up 10.1 points

Mlodzinski has been throwing this splitter this year, and he was looking really good before giving up nine earned runs in these last two starts combined. The K% is down to 24% now.

Kodai Senga had to throw 30 four-seamers with just 13 forkballs mixed in. That’s never going to work for him, and he was terrible once again. That’s the risk you take… sometimes you don’t have that split/fork pitch and you’re left on an island throwing bad fastballs to dudes who smoke them. Senga is a drop. He’s terrible.

Spencer Arrighetti felt good about his heater yesterday and had a really nice outing against the Yankees. I didn’t expect that. Lots of called strikes (9.4% SwStr%). He was able to land the four-seamer for called strikes (61% Strike%, 5.3% SwStr%), and the curveball and cutter put some dudes away. Pretty encouraging. But he’s still at a 15% K-BB%, 3.44 JA SIERA, and 3.91 JA ERA through three outings. I don’t think he’s great, but maybe he’s good enough for 12-teamers? They’re letting him throw a bunch of pitches (100, 96, 96), so he should be able to pull out some wins and qualbangers.

I’ve been raving about Emerson Hancock’s four-seamer all year. So what’s he do? Starts throwing a bunch of sinkers! Maybe he just realizes he can’t get away with the deception on the four-seamer for very long. But the results haven’t been favorable for him since demoting the four-seamer.

The Blue Jays don’t think it’s bad luck. He’s lost the closer job. It looks like Louis Varland is the closer to own there.

Trevor Rogers being here is good news. Although it seems like justice since he was on the good luck list all of last year. A .444 BABIP the last two weeks!

We’re hoping that Mick Abel gets back on schedule. I haven’t heard any updates, but maybe that’s good news. We should be seeing him get back in the next 10-14 days if the original timeline holds up.

Casey Schmitt now has a 15.9% Brl% with a .365 xwOBA and a .269 xBA. He’s hitting the ball a lot better this year and he’s always looked like a decent batting average guy.

JJ Wetherholt now has five dingers on the year and a .238/.363/.406 slash line. An 8.8% Brl% with an 18.5% K%. The guy is good and we’re definitely seeing him improve with that valuable first 100 PA experience.

Josh Jung also raised his season barrel rate to 6.7% after it had been below 3% for awhile. He’s having a great season (.920 OPS), and it’s good to see him get into a few barrels.

How about Spencer Torkelson? Five straight days with a homer to raise his season SLG to .472 and his OPS to .836 after an ice-cold start.

The Red Sox are a total mess right now. It seems like the players are pissed about all of those firings.

I’m not much of an intangibles guy, but it can’t be great for the on-field performance when it’s a bad situation in the locker room. Roman Anthony and Wilyer Abreu have both been unlucky the last few weeks. Anthony has an 11.5% Brl% with a 22% K% and a 22% BB% in the last 14 days. He should start helping out your fantasy team soon, especially in points/OBP.
