I’m pretty upset I didn’t get Spencer Schwellenbach on more teams. I took him a few times, but couldn't get him into either of my two main leagues. What a start that was yesterday:
8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 10 K, 0 BB, 23.2% SwStr%, 57.8% Strike%, 26.3%
That was the #3 start of the year on the grading tool.
I have a top 100 SP that I’ll try to keep updated frequently. You can find that in the automated SP ranks sheet. I have Schwellenbach in the top 15. I will officially unveil the top 100 soon in a post. I just want to do a little bit of automation on the list so that I can add some data to the ranks every day (stats, last start, next start, etc.).
Jose Soriano is a guy we have an eye on. He had a strange start in his second go at it in 2025.
5.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 9 K, 3 BB, 18.9% SwStr%, 40% Ball%
He’s not usually a strikeout guy, but he had that going yesterday. The slider was pretty nasty, and he got decent results with the curve and splitter.
The pitch is very interesting, but the command is not very good. I think he’s a matchup-dependent streamer. I would not expect too many more 7+ strikeout outings from him.
It seems like there was some bad luck for Brandon Pfaadt last night.
6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 0 BB, 16.5% SwStr%, 34.1% Ball%
That’s a lot of whiffs for getting just four strikeouts. He just couldn’t put guys away. For the season, he has a pretty enticing 13.6% SwStr% and a 33% Ball%, but he’s given up four homers on a .430 xwOBA. Lefties have hit all four of those homers. You can see splits data on the “P Splits” tab of the main dash.
So it’s a great .267 SLG allowed to righties but .688 to lefties. That’s the problem he has! You can break it down further by pitch mix in the “Arsenal Splits” tab:
The key against lefties, you’d think, would be that changeup. But it hasn’t looked good early on. I still Pfaadt’s K:BB should still be good enough to make him viable in 12-teamers or greater, and he can end up being a very good option if he’s facing a lineup without many left-handed bats.
Max Meyer struck out eight more hitters, but he also gave up eight hits as the Braves broke their curse.
6 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 8 K, 2 BB, 16.3% SwStr%, 34.8% Ball%
I’d say that’s a good sign. It’s a 14.6% SwStr% and 35% Ball% on the season.
The four-seamer worked nicely last night, but that’s still a high 40% Ball% on the pitch. I think Meyer is a solid streamer right now, and he should be owned in deeper leagues just for the sake of the young upside.
The Gavin Williams breakout doesn’t look like it’s happening. It’s still extremely early, but it’s a 10.7% SwStr% and 35% Ball% early on. He has not been efficient, going just eight innings total in two starts with a 19% K% and an 11% BB%.
I would cut him in ten-team leagues and at least see who’s available for him in 12-teamers. You’re still holding in deep leagues.
Jesus Luzardo has arguably been the best pitcher in the league in his first two starts. He went seven scoreless against the Dodgers with an 8:2 K:BB. He has 19 strikeouts in 12 innings early on with a walk rate which is under control at 8.7%.
Great numbers down the list there. He was putting the ball wherever he wanted it last night and just mowing down Dodgers. Great sign. I would value Luzardo as a top 30 SP right now. I still don’t feel amazing about him keeping this up for the rest of the year. We have seen flashes from him before, just for those inconsistencies to creep up, but he’s looking fantastic right now.
Tylor Megill had a scoreless outing and has now given up just one run in 10.1 innings with ten strikeouts.
The other numbers aren’t super inspiring. The SwStr% is about at the league average at 11.9%, the Ball% is high at 39%. But at least nobody has squared him up yet with a .276 xwOBA).
It’s good to see the slider getting whiffs. I think the fastball should improve. I don’t think he has the command to be an ace pitcher, but he’s someone to start in positive matchups.
Things aren’t looking great for Kevin Gausman. He has just four strikeouts in his first 11.1 innings with three walks.
Remember last year that the four-seamer was great but the splitter wasn’t anywhere near good enough to back it up. It’s been more of the same so far in his two starts:
The 8.7% SwStr% isn’t going to work, and the Ball% isn’t phenomenal either at 34% (league average is about 36%). He’s also not getting any ground balls early on. We should wait a few more starts, but if these numbers are still looking like this in three weeks I’ll be calling him a drop.
Tyler Mahle is getting whiffs early on.
That’s a super high SwStr% on the four-seamer, especially for it being at 92.7mph. The slider has been nice, but he doesn’t use it a ton. I’m not super convinced by the pitch mix here, especially since he’s walking a ton of guys (six in 6.2 innings), but if he gets the command back under control, he could be interesting.
Who would have thought that the league HR leaders early on would be Aaron Judge, Eugenio Suarez, and Tommy Edman. Edma is slashing .286/.297/.714 with a 13% K% and a steal.
And Jacob Wilson has gone deep twice already without striking out a single time. That’s pretty impressive. The contact rate is at 98%. The xBA is .377, and he’s reached 107.1mph on the EV. Can he really hit double-digit homers? I’m still not convinced, but it’s a mighty good sign out of the gate. He was hitting homers in spring as well. Who knows, maybe I’ve been completely wrong and this guy is a very good fantasy player. He’s an easy add in fantasy leagues where you need batting average help. He will certainly help you there.
Alright I’m outta here, happy Saturday.
