Chase Burns and Jack Leiter made their cases again yesterday. Massive outings for both dudes.

Leiter last year:

Leiter this year:

The pitch mix business:

Kind of a red flag on the 45% Ball% on his four-seamer. I’m not sure how he’s only walked the two batters throwing his primary pitch for balls so frequently. The changeup and slider both look good, and those are the ones he’s thrown for strikes. But that’s weird stuff.

If you can get a bite on Leiter, I’d be pretty happy to sell high on the dude right now. Maybe this breakout will happen. It wouldn’t be out of nowhere, the talent has always been there, but the best bet is that he these walks are going to come back. He had a career walk rate over 10% coming into this year, and the fastball command has not improved, at least not through two outings.

As for Burns, we shouldn’t be surprised at the dominance. His MLB career SwStr% is now up to 17.6% with a better-than-average 35% Ball%. He’s extremely good. One of the most talented pitchers in the world. His JA ERA from 2025-2026 ranks third best behind only Skubal and Greene.

If he stays healthy, he’s a smash pick. But that was always the case. I don’t think we learned anything new since the regular season started other than that he’s currently very healthy.
