Some interesting pitcher debuts yesterday. I have to quickly mention that Jordan Montgomery is back. He is certainly not going to be relevant in any fantasy league, but it’s kind of a funny story.
He had that pretty nice 2023 season with a 3.20 ERA in 189 innings. But it’s all fallen apart big-time since then.
The Rangers signed him to a one-year deal for $1.25 million this winter, and he returned to their rotation yesterday to give up two homers and three runs in four innings getting just two strikeouts. It’s a funny story because the Diamondbacks gave him a large one-year contract for 2025 and it had a player option for $22 million the next year. Montgomery crushed for 117 innings in 2024, and then of course elected to take that player option and make $22 million more for doing nothing.
But he’s back with the Rangers now, which speaks to the rotation depth issues they’re having with Jack Leiter out for the season.
More interestingly for the future was the Hagen Smith call up. He’s the White Sox #2 prospect (Bonemer is #1). His minor league numbers:
Lots of strikeouts, but huge walk issues and a bad 4.32 ERA down there this year. The White Sox used him as a two-inning reliever yesterday. He walked four guys in those innings but didn’t give up an earned run, at least.

No command at all with this 45% Ball%. The White Sox must know this is a problem, but he’s a dynasty asset to use. Maybe they can figure out the command let his decent left-handed stuff play in the Majors.
I wanted to check back on Jackson Jobe since we have the Stuff+ numbers now:
Pretty nice 107 Stuff+ on the fastball and 114 on the slider. So that’s encouraging. It seems like his fastball is being thrown differently, and there’s all kinds of upside with him as the Tigers move forward with their new-look rotation. Even with Mize and Skubal out of the picture, they could be a pretty decent rotation the rest of this year and next with Valdez, Melton, and Jobe as the 1-3.
Two Cy Young candidates pitched yesterday:
Cam Schlittler - 7.0IP 3H 1ER 1R 11K 0BB
Jacob Misiorowski - 6.0IP 4H 3ER 3R 9K 1BB
Business as usual, although Misiorowski did give up three earned runs, tying the most he’s given up this year. Pretty wild to see that he’s gone 22 starts without giving up more than three runs all year long.
The Brewers seem to be going with a six-man rotation, which is bad and good for Mizz. Fewer starts, but they’ll have more confidence in letting him throw normal amounts of pitches. He got up to 94 yesterday.
And they kinda have to let these guys go in a six-man rotation since there’s one fewer bullpen arm available. Mizz should coast to a Cy Young award, but you’re not going to get any two-start weeks from him the rest of the way.
Jesus Luzardo - 7.0IP 4H 2ER 2R 12K 1BB
He did what many people can’t do, strike out a bunch of Blue Jays. The only good thing the Blue Jays have going for them offensively is a lack of strikeouts. But Luzardo didn’t care about that. His K% is up to 29.7% K% now.
Just another really good season from Luzardo, the Phillies got a steal with him.

You should still feel very good about all of those guys even though they have all had several disappointing starts.
Skenes will be a really interesting draft case next year. It really does look like he was pretty lucky in 2025 but has been awfully unlucky in 2026. All of the focus is on the velo and stuff with very little attention being paid to the higher BABIP (.307) and super low strand rate (66%). He was at a .273 BABIP and 82% strand rate last year. So we have the potential for him to be a sort of “buy low” next year.
Sean Manaea - 7.0IP 3H 1ER 1R 11K 0BB
The Pirates are just dust right now, as I keep saying. Manaea had an 11:0 K:BB against them. They can’t hit lefties, and they weren’t hitting lefties even when they were one of the best offenses in the league before the all star break.
Manaea hasn’t had the best year, but he’s flying under the radar a bit. His last six starts:
Very good stuff there with the 2.95 ERA and 17% K-BB%. The Mets are playing some decent baseball right now, and Manaea is going to finish the year as a traditional starter in this rotation so long as he’s healthy.
Grayson Rodriguez - 4.0IP 4H 3ER 4R 8K 4BB
Eight strikeouts for Grayson! That’s 20 in his last three starts, so he’s getting some of the stuff back. He hasn’t given up a homer in his last two, either. His problem here was four walks. But the dude has been decent in the second half:
13.6% SwStr%, 35.7% Ball%, 3.43 JA SIERA. Not bad at all. Maybe he’s figured something out, or maybe he’s just finally found some health.
Troy Melton - 6.0IP 4H 0ER 1R 5K 1BB
Did it again! He drops his ERA to 1.47 and his WHIP to 0.87. His last four starts:
That’s a doozy. Just 19 strikeouts in 25 innings and nine walks, but one homer allowed and somehow a 0.72 ERA. There’s a lot of luck going on there, I won’t be told otherwise. Let’s take another look at his season long pitch mix data:
Nothing overly impressive here besides the fact that nobody can square him up with a .272 xwOBA. The fastball has a really bad 45% Strike% and not a great 36% Ball%, but he’s kept it mostly in the yard despite a 32% FB%. I’m not sure what it is. Maybe the Tigers just have a way they’ve figured out to keep the fastballs in the yard. He and Casey Mize have done this thing where they give up a ton of fly balls but they’re always hit too high to be homers.
I’m just not willing to bet on that sustaining. It’s a sell profile for me on Melton, but maybe I’m wrong.
Jared Jones - 3.0IP 6H 8ER 8R 3K 3BB
Kind of a disaster for Jones. He was looking really good in the advanced stuff at first, but not so much anymore.
He has not been able to sustain 99+ on the fastball:
And now he’s down to a 20% K% in his last four starts while giving up five homers. I think there’s plenty of hope for his future, but he’s a fine guy to cut right now for the rest of the year.
Emerson Hancock - 4.67IP 9H 2ER 2R 3K 1BB
Can we get Kade Anderson up here, please? Pretty please? Hancock was at home for this one too where he usually pitches well. But he had no command and the Rays pounded him for nine hits. Since July 1st:
A 13.2% K-BB% with a .269 xwOBA. He’s been fine, definitely a guy lots of teams would like at the back end of their rotation. But the Mariners need to win games in a hurry if they want to make the playoffs, and Anderson definitely seems like a better option than Hancock right now.
Justin Wrobleski - 3.33IP 6H 3ER 4R 3K 3BB
Snell will pitch tomorrow, so this may have been the last start for Wrobleski in the rotation, maybe?
His last three starts have been a disaster:
Nine homers, 15 earned, 14 strikeouts, six walks. He’s lost the mojo. I’d cut him in fantasy leagues. Actually I wouldn’t, cause I never would have owned the guy in the first place.
Cristian Javier - 5.0IP 8H 4ER 4R 2K 1BB
Five whiffs in the Sunday night game. Going back to when he started building up as a starter again:
This is three outings, two starts. Not impressive stuff strikeout-wise. Just a 16.7% K%, but at least he’s pumping tons of strikes with just one walk in this time.
Look at the FB%, though. 48%! He’s going to give up tons of homers. A sub-20% K% and a high fly ball rate is a mixture for homers flying. His 12% HR/FB is low, and should regress, so it could get very ugly for Javier very fast.
He is throwing a cutter, which is new, but he’s still throwing his troublesome four-seamer 50% of the time.
Kumar Rocker - 3.0IP 7H 6ER 6R 5K 2BB
Bombed again! Now 17 hits given up in his last two outings as he’s seen the downside of having just one good pitch (the slider). Not a fantasy guy, but definitely someone to build those strikeout prop ladders on because he can have some huge games when the slider is really carving dudes up.
Randy Dobnak - 5.0IP 10H 4ER 4R 4K 1BB
Bout time! The Cubs showed the league how to do it.
He had given up just two runs in his four starts despite having just 11 strikeouts and nine walks. He didn’t give up a homer yesterday, but the BABIP went the other way and he had a WHIP over two there. Hopefully none of you bought into him and started him.
Connor Prielipp - 5.0IP 5H 3ER 3R 7K 2BB
Seven strikeouts. He just seems like a league-average pitcher to me.
The ERA is probably bloated a bit. Very, very low LOB% at 63%. So that hasn’t done him any favors. Also a high 18% HR/FB, and very, very high lately. So he can do better than a 4.79 ERA, clearly. I don’t think he’ll ever be a fantasy stud, but there’s enough here to draft him next year as an SP6 or something on a fantasy team.
Kyle Schwarber hit a couple of bombs after not hitting one since July 18th. His K% is out of control at 34.5% K%. He’s always struck out a bunch, but he at least kept it under 29% the previous two years:
Somehow he’s maintained a 7% HR%, a crazy number, and look the guy has 35 dingers this year with a .247 average. He’s a stud, but a strikeout rate that high has to turn into some cold streaks when they’re not connecting big-time when getting the bat to the ball. And that’s what we’ve seen, but the two homers yesterday make us forget about that streak. The Phillies are really going to need the .950 OPS version of Schwarber the rest of the way to give them a shot at a deep playoff run.
Pete Alonso has 25 bombs now. It’s been a slightly disappointing season in his Orioles debut, maybe.
HR% is down a half point since last year and the batting average has settled at .250, about where we’d have expected it. YOu never know what you’ll get average-wise from Alonso. High as .272, low at .218. But still a pretty reliable home run hitter and run producer.
He had a rough April. Since May began:
So that’s a lot more like what he did last year.
Griffin Conine is having a nice season.
10 bombs in 141 PAs, he’s swinging for the fences and connecting quite a bit. The 33% K% shows you something there. This is a hot streak that will end, but the dude does have power.
Look at the EVs:
Guy can crush. Definitely a high-upside DFS play that I’ve used myself plenty of times this year.
Luis Robert check-in. He homered yesterday in the Mets romp of the Pirates.
Keeping the K% in check, but not running at ton on the bases and homering at about a league-average rate. The steals are a big point here. He swiped 33 last year on a 41% attempt rate, and that just hasn’t been part of his game this year.
Maybe it has to do with the health. The Mets don’t hate running. They’re in the middle of the pack in attempt rate, and we saw that they let Soto run wild last year.
That’s an interesting question. Which teams have the highest and lowest stolen base attempt rates?
The big four:
Marlins 14.6%
Yankees 14.5%
Nationals 14.3%
Padres 14.2%
The lowest:
Tigers 4.8%
Astros 4.9%
Dodgers 5.2%
That’s probably mostly personnel-based. If you don’t have runners, you won’t run. The Marlins have Xavier Edwards and Jakob Marsee and Esteury Ruiz. You’re not going to have a low attempt rate with those three guys.
But maybe there’s an organizational element to that as well. Maybe it deserves a full examination this offseason as we prep for 2027.
And we are going to prep for 2027, damnit! I’m not going to have a different offseason here just because there will be a lockout. We operate as if the season will go off normally, and if it does - we’ll be way ahead of the doomers who slacked off over the winter thinking the season won’t happen.
Let’s look for some hot hitters of the second half, we’ll try to locate some pick-ups.
First of all, let’s shout out Jackson Merrill. He’s near the top of the fantasy point-scoring efficiency leaders since the break.

Willi Castro has been awesome with a .358 xwOBA and a .957 OPS in the second half.

Luis Rengifo is sneaky with an .868 OPS and two bombs. But probably not worth much as a pickup since he’s just been terrible for several years now.
Chase Meidroth and Masyn Winn are decent pickups if you need reliable playing time in the middle infield. Two pretty talented players there who are swinging good bats right now.
Garrett Mitchell looks like he’s been really unlucky. .240 xBA with a .183 actual. But meh. He just doesn’t do much
Andruw Monasterio is hitting .358/.430/.537 since the break as a big part of the Red Sox surge. Just one homer and one steal, but the hits are falling in and he has 11 runs and 15 RBI.
Jake Mangum has 21 steals and four bombs this year with a .303 average. That’s pretty valuable from a fantasy league perspective. Since July 1st:
Kind of a slap hitter who gets it done with the legs, but he’s thrown in three homers since July began to not be a total zero in that regard.
