This MacKenzie Gore thing is pure comedy. After almost two months of being one of the worst starters in the league, he rips off six scoreless with a 10:0 K:BB.
It’s another good reminder that we have to be very careful in reacting to small sample sizes. But man, it’s hard to think you did something wrong bailing on Gore during that stretch. The velo was down, the command was gone, the whiffs were down; everything looked like he was just hurt or tired out, and things were seemingly getting worse every time out.
The velo was back up yesterday:
In short, he was just #back. But will he stay back next time? Is he really back? Or just one-time back?
We’ll find out quick! His next two starts are against the Phillies and Mets. I wouldn’t want to start him if I could help it, but you do have to still admit that his per-start ceiling is up there with the best in the league.
Brandon Pfaadt and Eduardo Rodriguez both failed the road Rockies matchup this last weekend.
Pfaadt gave up 11 hits and three earned runs with just a 2:0 K:BB. He is not good, and that is a real shame.
Sean Manaea’s tricks have stopped working.
He has given up nine earned in his last two starts on an 8:2 K:BB, giving up two homers and 13 hits. As the pitch count has built up, he’s gotten worse.
I wonder if this is the expected path for guys who depend on these uncommon release points to fool hitters. No team has seen Manaea twice yet, but maybe they’re more able to prepare for him since there’s recent tape on him? I know they have batting practice machines that can simulate each indivivdual starting pitcher, so maybe those machines get more refined with the data after a guy makes a few starts and the machine can really nail down the release point?
I don’t know, that’s probably reading too much into it. It’s just a good lesson about how K-BB% is king. Manaea is a serviceable Major League starter, there’s no doubt about that, but he’s not a budding ace. He had just a 16.4% K-BB% last year but an over-performed 3.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.
He still is holding onto a strong K% this year at 26.3%, and the walk rate is down, but I don’t think either of those things sticks around for very long.
Manaea is still roster-worthy in most leagues, but you shouldn’t be expecting great performance from him.
Eric Lauer couldn’t pass the Dodgers test. He gave up an immediate homer to Ohtani and then went on to walk four and give up six hits in a short three-inning outing.
We have kept a close eye on Lauer this year. And he’s a lot better than anybody thought, but the good luck he was having was bound to dry up, and he doesn’t have anywhere near the level of stuff to perform well while having league-average “luck”. I’m not saying we should dismiss him entirely because he got hit around by the Dodgers, and the JA ERA still sits at 2.99. But it’s not going to be at all surprising if he’s quite bad the rest of the way home.
His 11.3% SwStr% doesn’t map to his 25% K%.
So we’d expect more like a 22% K% from him. That means more balls in play, and his GB% is soooo low at 30%. He’s benefited massively from a 12% HR/FB and 13.6% RISP H%.
The point is that things can go south very quickly for him.
Michael Harris II, man! I feel good about this one, because the trending players page on the Streamlit app was on him really early.
The key for him has been LIFTING the ball. He had a 54% GB% in the first half, and in the second half, it’s down to 35%. One of the most striking changes you’ll see. This is one of the wildest plots I’ll have posted this year:
That is amazing, man. Just all of a sudden, he goes from cheeks to champ.
It looks like he did a similar thing last year. This is the 2024 plot:
The injury right in the middle of the season breaks up the plot, but you can see the finish was really strong for him.
Good job to those of you who bought low on Michael Harris The Two.
Your current hottest hitters, in the same way that we found Michael Harris weeks ago:
Matt Wallner hasn’t played in a few days because he’s on paternity leave. So he’ll probably come off of that following a few sleepless nights and have the flame extinguished. Having a child does kind of change your brain immediately. Other things seem a lot less important. So maybe Wallner comes back and starts sucking, but that’s like a double-wide narrative street that we shouldn’t be driving on.
It’s a fair question about motivation, though. A guy is on a bad team late in the season, has just had a baby, and then has to go away from his family to play somewhat meaningless baseball games. That would be tough.
In general terms, I did investigate this a while back, though. I was wondering if you should expect hitters on really bad teams to perform worse at the end of the year. It’s tough to give one answer to this. Every individual case is different. A young player’s motivation comes more from staying in the league, earning a starting job for next year, and getting eventually paid. So the team record doesn’t matter much to them, I’d imagine. But in the cases of veterans or guys with locked-in contracts, you start to wonder what exactly they’d be motivated by in August & September other than personal pride.
Anyways, the answer I found is in this article:
If you just want the quick and dirty answer, it’s that they perform just a tiny bit worse.
Miguel Andujar being hot is so classic. He has a .375/.500/.688 line with a 27.3% Brl% with the Reds. But you can relax because it’s just 20 PAs.
You know who is really “cold” Elly De La Cruz! Maybe Andujar Space Jam’d him and took all his power. Elly’s second half:
97 PA, .250/.320/.352, 29.9% K%, 9.3% BB%, 5.1% Brl%, .281 xwOBA
I think these kinds of streaks just come with the player. He’s tall and swings really hard and hits a lot of ground balls, so you’re just going to have streaks where he doesn’t do much, but then of course you’ll have streaks where he makes up for all of it and then some.
Marcell Ozuna has been putting it together in a big way.
Since July 1st:
95 PA, .211/.347/.539, 16.8% K%, 17.9% BB%, 14.8% Brl%, .402 xwOBA
Your hitters with an xwOBA above .400 since July 1st:
