Yu Darvish can still get it done. Some of these veteran starting pitchers are really impressive to me. How are you 38 years old and still sitting down Major League hitters?
6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 6 SO, 1 BB, 17.9% SwStr%
We have seen it with Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw at times as well this year. The best pitchers in the world seem to be able to get the job done until nearly 40 years old, at least when they’re healthy enough to be on the mound.
And I guess that makes sense. We lose physical ability as a percentage more than as a raw total, right? Emmitt Smith doesn’t run anywhere near as fast as he used to, but I bet he’s still one of the faster 56-year-olds around. I have no idea why I chose Emmitt Smith as my example there. Must have seen a commercial with him in it recently, and have him lodged in the old subconscious.
Here’s the Yu Darvish pitch mix data from this year.
That’s six pitches with double-digit usages. He’s given up just four homers on 516 pitches (three of them on the sweeper!) and he’s limited hard contact on everything but that sweeper. Maybe he should sweep that one out of the mix!
Probably not. Darvish has been really something to watch, and it’s wild to think he’s still in the fantasy conversation here in 2025.
The Zebby Matthews vs. Will Warren matchup was of interest to me. Warren was pretty great:
6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 7 SO, 0 BB, 12.9% SwStr%, 29.4% Ball%
The sinker was working, and he cruised through the Twins lineup for a win.
Zebby struck out nine on 18 whiffs with a very nice 54.5% Strike% and 31.3% Ball%. However, he gave up three homers. That pushed his HR/9 up to 1.43 on the year. It was the third time this year (in the Majors) that he gave up three homers.
This was a huge issue for him in his short stint in the Majors last year (11 HR in 9 GS, 37.2 IP). For his career, he’s given up 18 homers in 81.2 IP (1.98 HR/9). He has a 36% GB% and throws a ton of four-seamers and sliders. That profile will result in homers.
The good news is that there’s a lot of room for improvement. It’s hard to have a HR/9 around two for very long. Only 20 pitchers have made 15+ starts dating back to 2023 with a HR/9 above 1.8. Here they are:
While I have this data, let’s look at the best pitchers at limiting homers, here’s everybody with 15+ starts and a HR/9 under 0.8.
I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking “man, this would be a great moment for a histogram of all the HR/9 rates in Jon’s data sheet”.
Most guys fall between 1 and 1.4 HR/9. So the outliers should, in general terms, be expected to gravitate toward that clump. There are many exceptions. We would not expect Cristopher Sanchez or Jose Soriano to end up above one. Those guys have the consistent, repeatable, skill to generate a ton of ground balls. And ground balls never go for homers. EVER.
91% of homers are on fly balls. Do you want more proof?
Do you want a pie graph?
Do you want to learn how to do sweet Python things like that? Well you can. You can. Right here. And it’s only $150. So you could either spend six million dollars at college, or just give me $150. And those two thing are exact perfect comparisons, there are no other considerations needed in that.
We went 3/5 in the five props from yesterday as I start my quest to make at least $1 betting on baseball this week. That ended up being a PLUS ZERO POINT SEVEN EIGHT UNIT PROFIT.
So if your “unit” was ONE MILLION DOLLARS, I just made you $780,000 in one day. You’re welcome.
DO YOU LIKE THAT EXCEL FORMATTING AND FORMULAS WELL YOU CAN LEARN THAT AND MUCH MORE FOR YOURSELF FOR JUST FIFTY DOLLARS!
The one guy who cost us a really nice day was Andrew Abbott. And man, I should have learned my lesson on that guy by now. I’m always telling people that he’ll give up a ton of homers in Great American Ballpark, and then he never freaking does it.
He has now given up just 28 homers on his 182 fly balls allowed in his career at the Great American Ballpark. That’s a 15.4% HR/FB.
That is right around the MLB average. But it’s better than the average in Cincy (17.9%). Here are the top seven parks in HR/9 since 2023:
Let’s show off some park data here since I’m in the Python plotting mood.
Here’s HR/FB by park since 2023:
Here’s HR/LD by park since 2023:
And here’s HR/GB by park since 2023:
lmao!
The big dogs got hit around last night.
I don’t see anything worth talking about with Crochet. Velo is still there and he’s been great pretty much every time out. You’ll have some bad starts, nobody is perfect.
With Logan Webb, we have seen some degradation.
He has not been able to keep up the K% gains we saw from him early this year. The SwStr% is down around 10% since June. Which is fine, he’s more or less just moving back to where he’s usually at, which is still a really good pitcher. But he’s not an SP1 for fantasy purposes in most league type (points leagues he might be still).
Since June 1st:
24.6% K%, 5.3% BB%, 10.3% SwStr%, 33.7% Ball%, 51.5% GB%, 2.83 JA ERA
But since July 1st:
22.7% K%, 6.1% BB%, 9.9% SwStr%, 35.2% Ball%, 51.6% GB%, 3.12 JA ERA
You’re not benching him or trading him or anything, so I’m not real sure what more I have to say that would help anybody.
As for Eovaldi, he blows it as soon as people start talking about him as a potential Cy Young winner. His ERA was at 1.38 before last night, and those five earnies pushed it up to 1.71. That’s still really good and something that should put him in the Cy Young conversation. But I don’t think anybody is taking it from Skubal.
Here are your updated ERA leaderes (15+ GS):
Eovaldi still has a significant edge on Skubal in this regard, but it’s in 29 fewer innings, and he’ll probably end up striking out like 80 fewer batters.
We should have a looksie at my boy Cristian Javier. A forever-fade for you boy. I’ve never liked him. I mean you would think that this guy beat me up in high school or something.
He threw 85 pitches last night in his 2025 MLB debut.
5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 5 SO, 2 BB
The pitch mix:
He’s never been a velo guy, but his fastball has had periods of dominance. It was not dominant last night with that poor 6.9% SwStr% and 41% Strike%, but he escaped without giving up much on it. The sweeper is a good pitch for him. The problem for Javier has never been about the breaking ball.
And he has a changeup and sinker now, so he’s a bit of a new-look pitcher. He was heavily four-seamer and slider/sweeper back in 2021-2022 when he was having success. And we can see the up-tick in changeup usage and the introduction of the sinker here:
They should make those lines more bold. That’s an ugly plot to look at. But there you go. Fewer four-seamers is a good thing for Javier, and he’s someone we can keep an eye on. His 11.8% SwStr% and 37.6% Ball% combo last night is not what you want to see, but it’s 85 pitches in his first MLB start since May 21st, 2024. So we’ll let him generate more data before we decide on what to do with him for the future.
Another bomb job from Colson Montgomery last night. He’s now at:
.241/.303/.565, 28.6% K%, 7.6% BB%, 16.2% Brl%, .253 xBA, .379 xwOBA
He’s well above zero in the xwOBA OE stuff (+0.50). And he’s lifting the ball like few others can (32% GB%). Hard hit fly balls are a great outcome, and he’s done a lot of that.
He’s 7th in the league in air pull rate if you limit it to just a 100 PA min.
The whiffs are going to catch up with him, though. I don’t see much way he’s not a 30% K% guy, and it’s really hard to hit even .240 while that’s going on. But he’s a 12-team or deeper must-start guy I’d say. He’s rocking dongs on the reg.
Before I wrap it today, let’s do the bottom 20 in xwOBA OE of the second half, restricted to hitters owned in at least 60% of Yahoo leagues.
Goooodbye!
