Check out yesterday’s box scores here
Brandon Pfaadt is the latest pitcher doing things that make no sense. He went into Atlanta last night and shut ‘em down.
→ 7.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 7K 0BB
The strikeouts were coming this time. So this was simply a good start. What doesn’t make sense is his 1.15 ERA and 0.88 WHIP since getting back into the D’Backs rotation. He has a 14.4% K% even after yesterday.
This was his first time above four strikeouts since July 6th, and he has not allowed a run in his last four outings. Pretty remarkable stuff. He has always had very good command, so maybe he is just on a run of taking that to an insane level that we never see.
His “Location+” is above 107, which is very good. So that’s what he’s doing I guess. Just putting the ball on the corners and generating all of that weak contact. The .245 xwOBA is extremely, extremely low. You almost never see that going on over a stretch of multiple starts. His xERA on contact (which is just the same as doing xwOBA on contact) over this stretch is 3.58. That’s fourth best among starts since June 30th when he began this.
Eury Perez 3.45
Randy Vasquez 3.47
Yamamoto 3.50
Pfaadt 3.58
Urena 3.63
He’s up to 70% owned. I am so stubborn in needing strikeouts to believe in anything that I still don’t think I’d add him. But man that is looking dumber and dumber every time B-Pfaadt takes the hill. It’s pronounced fought, by the way. I asked him one time on X cause we used to be online friends.
I hyped him up back when he was in the minors and crushing with a 25% K-BB% or something, and he followed me. Shout out to me. But for today, I kinda hate him, because I stacked Braves in DFS against him last night.
I’m in a big-time matchup with PAUL in my home league. Both of our pitching staffs are humming this week. Paul is in first place and just crushing the league while I’m trying to hold onto a playoff spot. So I want to take this opportunity to make fun of Paul because he started both Jackson Jobe and Landen Roupp last night.
Jobe: 3.67IP 9H 6ER 6R 4K 1BB
Roupp: 5.67IP 5H 4ER 4R 5K 3BB
I call it the whip wrecker. Jobe’s pitches from last night:
39% Ball%, .496 xwOBA, two homers on the fastball, 6.5% SwStr% on that pitch. It’s not all about velo! And Jobe showed us that two years ago when he came up super-hyped and Major Leaguers had no trouble with his velo.
So this was a bad sign for Jobe, but his first start was quite good. Through two starts:
11% SwStr%, 37.2% Ball%. It’s too early to judge, but those are the stat I’m watching in small samples, and it hasn’t been good thus far for Jobe. Forgiveness is warranted; he’s just getting back from Tommy John. But I wouldn’t be very confident in him this year. And the jury is still very much out on if he can handle the big leagues.
As for Roupp, that was an awesome matchup at home against the Rockies and he failed pretty miserably. He didn’t have the command. He’s just not a trustworthy fellow. And yet he’s 70% owned.
Only ten homers given up, so he can do that. 52% GB%. But not a ton of strikeouts or whiffs and a walk problem.
Yamamoto - 6.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 9K 2BB
He was the chalk DFS guy last night, and I didn’t really understand that against the Brewers. But he got it done big time.
Chris Sale - 6.0IP 5H 1ER 1R 9K 0BB
Big outing from Sale. He struck out the final three in the sixth after putting two on base to turn his line from potentially mediocre to really good. Only 11 whiffs, but a 60.2% Strike%. He’s extremely good at pitching. Not a dude who can’t get big results when he doesn’t have it all going. He’s really hard to square up in the zone, and that’s a really good thing to have to fall back on even when he doesn’t have all the whiffs going.
Gavin Williams - 4.33IP 7H 5ER 5R 5K 4BB
Padres gave him problems. Now seven earned runs and a 12:6 K:BB in his last two following that ridiculous run of strikeouts. Worst start of the year for Gavin.
Velo was fine; no reason to worry about Williams. Obviously, the 40% K% thing that was going on for a month there wasn’t going to stick. He’ll be another interesting draft case next year with his 3.74 ERA this year but an elite 24.3% K-BB%. It’s just this home run problem re-surfacing. He’s at 1.5 HR/9 for the year and has given up three more the last two starts.
Bubba Chandler - 5.0IP 4H 2ER 2R 5K 2BB
He continues his nice roll. Still not piling up strikeouts, but he’s throwing more strikes and letting his good stuff turn into weak contact and outs. He hasn’t allowed a homer in his last six starts and has a 2.84 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP.
Chandler has improved as the year has gone on. Still just a 9.4% K-BB%, so it’s hard to get super excited, but it’s a good second half from Chandler. The future is looking brighter.
Clay Holmes - 6.67IP 1H 0ER 0R 3K 1BB
Took advantage of some winds blowing in and cruised through the Cardinals lineup. The Cubs haven’t gotten a ton from their SP acquisitions so far, but this was a good sign for them. We’ll see Holmes make some starts in the playoffs.
Sandy Alcantara - 7.0IP 3H 1ER 1R 2K 4BB
Another seven inning start from Sandy. 1.80 ERA, 0.93 WHIP in his last eight.
Pretty strong overall season from Sandy:
That’s pretty much the guy we came to know before the injury stuff happened. Mid-threes ERA, decent WHIP, and a lot of volume.
He leads the league in innings pitched by a lot. That’s an under-appreciated stat in the fantasy baseball game. It’s a pretty short list of guys with 145+ innings thus far, and he’s all the way up above 170.
George Kirby - 4.67IP 8H 5ER 5R 2K 3BB
Just another reason to get Kade Anderson up here! The Mariners continue to struggle on the road.
Mariners at home: 3.30 ERA
Mariners on road: 4.43 ERA
This is weekend for call-ups. We’ve hit the day where full rookie eligibility or whatever is locked in for next year. I don’t know the exact details, but something changes today where teams have more of incentive to call up their prospects.
The Cardinals are calling up Joshua Baez, as we surmised could happen on the Waiver Wire podcast yesterday.
Baez has had a video game-type season in the minors.
34 bombs, 21 steals. One of the best in baseball in that stat combo. The 29.5% K% is high, and that will almost certainly go into the mid-30s for his first 1.5 months in the bigs. But I think he’s must-own in all fantasy leagues anyway because of this special HR+SB ability. He’s one of the more talented players in baseball, and the future is pretty bright for him in the fantasy game. Could definitely turn into a first-round pick in the next few years.
Awesome start for Chase Burns.
→ 7.0IP 4H 0ER 0R 8K 0BB
Good to see him still feeling good this late into the season. 131 innings now, 2.47 ERA, 1.09 WHIP. Stud pitcher.
And I guess he’ll be the Reds unquestioned ace for the near future with Hunter Greene out for next year.
Gunnar Henderson shows below as “super ultra mega hot”. Four hits yesterday. Maybe he just needed Adley Rutschman out of the picture. That makes no sense but I already typed the sentence. He has a .342 xBA, .487 xwOBA, 12% K%, and 13% Brl% in August. That’s really small-sample stuff; he didn’t have a very good month in July. So I’m not getting super excited about it, but good to see Gunnar crushing after a pretty disappointing season for him. He was a late first or early second round pick this year, and he just hasn’t played that way.
But hey, 20 bombs now. He could end up with a 25-12 season or something like that. And maybe he can hit enough to get the batting average above .230. He’s probably heading to be a fourth-rounder next year. We just haven’t seen much since that .281-37-21 season in 2024.
Miguel Vargas scored 40 fantasy points with two bombs.
Andy Pages had a pipe and swipe.
Jac Caglianone hit another bomb. That breakout is fully on. He’s hitting .302/.343/.582 since June began with 17 bombs. Here’s the list of .900+ OPS players since June:
Surprising to see Esmerlyn Valdez still on this list. He has a .562 OPS in August, but does have five hits in his last four games. Hasn’t homered since July 26th, though.
Munetaka Murakami hit his 27th bomb last night. He’s been just fine since getting off the IL after I was dooming on him again.
.370 OBP and on his way to a possible 35-bomb season even with an IL stint in there. His price will be very interesting next year. I have a feeling I’ll be on the fade side because of the K% and lack of steals, but he hasn’t stopped mashing dingers.
Zac Veen hit one into the cove. He’s a priority FAAB target this weekend, obviously. Him and Joshua Baez are the bats you want to spend on. Both have their flaws, but Veen has been electric with the bat all season and he’s homered twice in his first 7 PAs and hasn’t sniffed the Rocky Mountain air yet.
Nolan Schanuel is a touch underrated.
Another nice batting average and OBP season for him. Just seven homers, he’s not a power hitter, but there are leagues where you’ll take the ratios.
Hey Jose Altuve stole a couple of bases. He doubled his season total with that.
I think it’s about over for Altuve. Just a .696 OPS this year, 13 bombs, four steals. Probably not a 12-team option any longer.
That’s it for the Saturday notes!
