New fantasy football article up over at FTM FF!
My first best friend was named Brandon Franks. I have no idea what happened to him. We went to the same Christian school until 9th grade when the school donors pulled the plug and shut it down. After that, I didn’t talk to Brandon Franks. He was a part of the Xanga phase of social media, and I believe he even had a Myspace page. But he never got on Facebook or anything after that, so we never talked again and I have no idea what he’s up to.
That is my setup to tell you that Brandon Young pitched marvelously last night. He took a perfect game into the 8th when Ramon Urias was a douche and ruined it with a stupid infield hit.
I’ve often wondered what I’d do if I were in the Majors and up with two outs in the 9th against someone trying to complete a perfect game. If the game were close, obviously, you have to try to get on base. But if it’s 7-0 like we see above, I think I’d probably strike out on purpose just to let the guy have his day.
But I think that attitude itself would keep me away from ever being a professional athlete. I don’t have anywhere near the physical ability, of course, but there’s more to it than just the physical. You probably have to be a pretty intense competitor. And I have never been the least bit competitive. I have never cared about winning anything. So I’m wondering how many elite athletes there have been that the world has never gotten to know just because they didn’t have the mental side of things they needed. And they’re probably better for it, I know I am.
Brandon Young isn’t actually good. He has a 5.68 ERA with an 11.4% K-BB% this year. His JA ERA is at 4.00 (so he’s been pretty unlucky with that ERA, but he’s still not good).
The underlying numbers, even last night, didn’t look very good.
But he kept the ball out of the optimal angle range and had a fun night.
We must talk about Hurston Waldrep. He was the Braves first round pick in 2023, and they promoted him aggressively, but he hasn’t had MLB success to this point.
He’s made three big league outings this year, and he’s been great. Last night it was six shutout innings with two hits and a 7:2 K:BB.
The profile:
34 null pitches in there I might have to reload some data. The 3.02 JA ERA and 0.91 WHIP+ are good signs, the 18.2% K-BB% is good but nothing special, and more of the same for the 12.7% SwStr% and 37.8% Ball%. Nothing is all that impressive in the advanced numbers, I guess. But the .250 xwOBA shows he’s been tough to hit. Here’s last night:
So he’s throwing a ton of non-fastballs. The cutter can be called a fastball but it can play more like a slider with some guys. But he’s at just 16% four-seam and sinker usage, throwing a ton of splitters and sliders. That’s interesting. I don’t think it makes him a reliable traditional SP, and it will probably turn into inefficiency and walks. So I’m not too high on him, I guess that’s what I’m saying.
But he’s a worthwhile streamer or a guy to add if you’re really looking for a pitcher.
Jacob Misiorowski returned and was awful.
1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 3 SO, 3 BB, 48.1% Ball%
That brings his season BB% up to 11.5% and he now has a 3.89 ERA. Wild that he was the ROY favorite just a few weeks ago. I don’t think you drop him in deep leagues, but I don’t think you’re going to get many strong starts of 5+ innings this year.
Clayton Kershaw is somehow finding a way. Three straight quality starts and his ERA is down to 3.01.
This is despite having basically nothing on the fastball. That four-seamer sits at 89 this year and has a horrific 2.1% SwStr% and 41% Strike%.
That’s the lowest SwStr% and third-lowest Strike% for any four-seamer thrown at least 400 times this year.
He’s fully dependent on the slider and curveball. Neither of those looks over-the-top great, either, so I’m really confused how someone with this kind of arsenal rips off 18 great innings like he has. But that’s Kershaw for you, baby. Hall of Famer.
18 whiffs for Jack Perkins and a win, but nothing else was that good. A 40.8% Ball%, five hits, and three walks given up in five innings. Full season update:
Great SwStr%, not allowing much hard contact, keeping the barrels down, but the command has held him back.
Maybe we’ll see Francisco Lindor get going. He has eight hits and three homers in his last three games, and if you look really close at the end of this plot you’ll see those lines beginning to shoot upward.
The Julio Rodriguez second-half thing is happening.
Ten dingers and a .929 OPS in the second half. Here are your second half HR leaders:
While we’re there, here are your second-half steals leaders:
That’s right, third-percentile sprint speed Josh Naylor leads with 11 swipes.
Anything is possible in the United States of America. God Bless you all.
