Check out yesterday’s box scores here
No pitcher really stood out yesterday. So I’m looking at the hitter leaderboard to find our player of the day. And at the top of that list are three mega studs:
Crow-Armstrong 45 points (2 HR, 1 SB)
Ohtani 40 points (4 H, 2 HR, 4 RBI)
Witt Jr. 39 points (1 HR, 1 SB)
The story writes itself. The NL MVP race is between Crow-Armstrong and Ohtani.
Ohtani made his case with a huge game in Coors, but Crow-Armstrong did even better, matching him in homers and adding a steal. So I’ll give it to PCA. I don’t know how much stolen bases play into the MVP discussion for the voters. But if it matters a lot, that’s a big benefit to PCA. Let’s compare these two guys.
PCA has ten games played on Ohtani as a hitter. He clears him in WAR by 0.9. He has a one-homer edge, but 23 more steals. That said, Ohtani’s OPS is a bit better.
I don’t think it would be a close discussion if Ohtani hadn’t stopped pitching. They’ll get him back on the mound in September, apparently. You could say the hitting stats are a wash. I’m not sure if that’s true, but you could say that and not be saying anything ridiculous.
So it comes down to which is more valuable. Ohtani’s pitching or Crow-Armstrong’s centerfield defense. Right now, Ohtani has thrown 85.2 innings with a 1.79 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. He might clear 100 innings, but he certainly won’t go much above that.
100 innings with an ERA below 1.50 is quite valuable. How do you compare that to 160 games of elite center field defense? I have no idea. That will be for somebody else to figure out.
If it were up to me RIGHT NOW, I’d give it to Crow-Armstrong. Let’s mix it up, give the award to someone else!
PCA clinched another 30-30 season lst night. He now has 30 bombs and 31 steals with a .929 OPS. He’s been a lot more consistent this year, driven by a big improvement in plate discipline.
2025: 24% K%, 4.5% BB%
2026: 27% K%, 11.8% BB%
More strikeouts, but a lot more walks. Last year, he was basically swinging at everything:
2025: 60% Swing%, 81% Zone Swing%, 42% Chase%
2026: 49% Swing%, 67% Zone Swing%, 34% Chase%
A conscious decision to be more selective at the plate. He’s taking more strikes, which explains some of that +3 K%. Here’s his Zone% by year:
2024: 50.3%
2025: 46.5%
2026: 45.4%
I looked that up because I assumed that he was seeing more strikes this year because pitchers realize he’s not an easy guy to get a swing from out of the zone. But the zone rate has stayed the same. I guess it works in both ways. Pitchers still don’t want to throw a guy who hit 30 homers last year much to hit.
But PCA knows what pitches to swing a lot better than he did last year. And that has turned into a higher quality of contact.
He’s in the top 20 in that stat. So he’s pairing the elite speed with elite quality of contact. In short, I’m not saying anything new. PCA is a stud MLB player and a shoo-in first-round pick next year.
Let’s not take too much away from Ohtani. He slumped a bit after the injury to his knee that had him shut down from the pitching side. He hit just .241/.300/.463 in the second part of June. But since July began, he’s at .291/.349/.583 for a .932 OPS. Since the All-Star break, when he got some much-needed rest, he’s hit .301/.355/.575 with 7 HR in 124 PAs, and he’s even stolen a base.
The Royals took care of business at home against the Athletics. Bobby Witt Jr. hit his second homer in as many days and now has 15 on the season. You’re probably not pumped with just the 15 homers this year for Witt. He has a swing that results in more line drives than fly balls, and we’ve seen him fall to a career-low 3.2% HR% this year.
The good news is that he’s still hitting .286 with 33 steals. But you would have to say this is his worst season since his rookie year.
The consistency will keep him in the first half of the first round next year. He could very well come up with 20+ homers this year if he gets hot in that regard, so we could be looking at a 20-40 season with a .290 average. But these last two years have shown us that he’s more of a 25-homer projection than a 30-homer projection like we had on him following 2022 & 2023.
The studs were studs yesterday. One big hitter day from someone who might still be available in fantasy leagues was what Christian Encarnacion-Strand did. Another hyphenated last name for us.
He hit his sixth homer in his 24th game. He has a 6.8% HR% this year. To put that in perspective, here’s the leaderboard in this stat if we let CES be a part of it by dropping the PA requirement to just 80.
Goodman 7.39%
Murakami 7.22%
Schwarber 6.92
Conine 6.84%
CES 6.82%
Alvarez 6.63%
Judge 6.56%
Buxton 6.56%
Olson 6.56%
Rice 6.48%
KINDA CRAZY that there’s a three-way tie for 7th at 6.56%. Going to the hundredths place, you’d think we wouldn’t have that!
Here’s every hitter in the Majors the last two years that has a hyphen in their last name:
I try to bring the hardcore stats to you here.
More on CES:
24.1% K%

.364 xwOBA
105.9 EV90
106.2 EV90 on fly balls
It’s only 87 PAs, everything could change in a hurry. But he’s doing all of the things you want to see from a power hitter. Keeping strikeouts in the mid-20s, hitting a lot of fly balls, and hitting those fly balls hard.
Jordan Walker had another big day with 28 fantasy points, but it took him two games to do it, so BIG WHOOP. He’s now stolen three bags in August and has 17 this year. His attempt rate is up to 18% this month, the best month since April. It hasn’t been consistent. There have been slumps:
But he has bounced back from all of them. He’s now hitting .289/.347/.500 with 24 homers and those 17 steals. And he’s at 88 RBI. That’s #5 in the league. Here are those RBI leaders, which we rarely talk about.
Burleson 92
Stewart 91
Abrams 91
Alvarez 88
Walker 88
Dingler 82
Alonso 81
Pages 81
Garcia Jr. 79
Lowe 79
If you had predicted the top ten in RBI at the beginning of the year, maybe you would have gotten Yordan Alvarez and Pete Alonso right. But nobody was expecting these kinds of seasons from Abrams, Walker, Dingler, or Garcia Jr. That’s for sure.
It hasn’t been very good for Luis Garcia Jr. since joining the Yankees, by the way:
Shota Imanaga - 6.0IP 2H 3ER 3R 10K 3BB
Gave up a home run to Randal Grichuk as a left-handed pitcher, many such cases. But 20 whiffs, ten strikeouts, and everything was pretty clean other than the homer. He’s now at a 1.82 HR/9 with an 18.7% K-BB%. It’s almost exactly what we expected from him.
Grichuk is hitting .309/.346/.626 with eight homers in 130 PAs against lefties. He’s a stud hitter in those spots.
But remember that Rob Refsnyder was this guy for a few years, got a big contract from the Mariners, and now has been absolutely awful in all situations. The short-side platoon bat isn’t all that valuable. Only 30% of starts have been by a left-handed pitcher this year. So Grichuk doesn’t get in there much, and when he does, he’s usually removed by the 6th inning because they bring one of the many righties in the bullpen to face him.
Blake Snell - 6.0IP 2H 1ER 1R 5K 3BB
A 28.9% Ball% from Snell. That’s very, very low. And then an 18.9% SwStr%, a 54.5% Strike%, and his fastball velo was +1.3mph from last year. He looks fully healthy and ready to dominate for the Dodgers when it matters the most.
Quinn Mathews - 4.0IP 2H 1ER 1R 7K 3BB
He got the call back up for this double header yesterday. It wasn’t great with just four innings covered, but seven strikeouts and two hits allowed tell you about how nasty his stuff is. It’s all about command from Mathews, and the 42% Ball% was very prohibitive yesterday. That’s going to be a continued issue for him, and I’m not even sure he’ll stick in the Cardinals rotation since they were so quick to demote him back to AAA last time.
But Dustin May is gone now, so maybe Mathews will stick. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t just let him finish out the year and get that valuable MLB experience. For fantasy leagues, there will be some really good outings when he has the command, but the command is super spotty and he’s probably going to be a pretty bad WHIP pitcher who does not get deep into games.
Carmen Mlodzinski - 3.0IP 8H 4ER 4R 3K 1BB
It ain’t working for Mlodzinski as a starter. This is a guy who threw a bit of a fit after ceding his rotation spot to Jared Jones, and that seemed lame, because he’s never shown any ability to be good the second/third time through the order. And now, he’s not even good the first time through the order!
Michael Wacha - 5.0IP 6H 4ER 4R 3K 0BB
We expected way more from Wacha at home against the Athletics. A 3:0 K:BB, two homers given up, six hits, four runs… to a minor league lineup.
But we have to keep ramming in SPs against the Athletics.
But there aren’t great options coming up. Wesneski maybe, roll the dice on Lugo/Dobnak I guess. But I don’t see any clear “must stream” options for your 10/12-team leagues.
Bailey Ober - 4.33IP 6H 2ER 2R 4K 1BB
Ober keeps surviving, but his fastball velo is down to 87.2.
He’s the only starter under 90mph on the fastball for the year, and his season average is 88 now!
And maybe it’s just crazy enough to work. Hitters see 95+ almost every AB, so this guy coming at ‘em with 87 could just mess with their timing enough to be sort of effective. I’d check the data, but there are no fastballs being thrown this soft to even study!
Shane McClanahan - 3.33IP 4H 3ER 3R 3K 0BB
First start back from a short IL stint. Just 57 pitches thrown, and he wasn’t good. 10.5% SwStr%, 42.1% Strike%, 38.6% Ball%.
Fastball velo was normal (95.6), so that’s good. Maybe just some rust. But I will say that McClanahan really hasn’t been great this year by the numbers we like the most.
13.9% K-BB%
13.0% SwStr%
35.1% Ball%
47% GB%
He’s done a good job limiting hard contact (.315), so overall he’s someone you still want to use in a 12-team league, but he’s nothing like the guy we saw before the injuries.
We are one month into the “second half” now. Just over a month to go. Let’s look at the JA SIERA leaders since the break. That’s the number on the far right, you can’t see the title when I sort by it on the dashboard:
Not too many surprises other than Kyle Leahy. He has a 27% K%, 1.8% BB%, and 53% GB% in his last five starts. That’s pretty interesting. He’s faced the Angels, Reds, Blue Jays, Rockies (at home), and Phillies. So it’s been an easy schedule, but a 30:2 K:BB with 3 HR allows is tough to do. Next up, he’ll go to Cincy, then to Philly, and then host the Pirates. So that’s 2 of 3 very good matchups. I’d look to add him if you’re hurting at SP.
Some lower-owned JA SIERA leaders since the break:
I would like to use Jacob Lopez on the road. He should be pitching on Friday in Houston. And that’s a fine matchup as a lefty. He’s been sneaky good since getting called back in June. I’ve talked a lot about him.
That’s today’s daily notes!
