Is David Peterson the Mets ace? Could he start the first postseason game for them? He made his case for it yesterday with an eight-inning, ten-strikeout game against the Nationals.
8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 10 SO, 1 BB
But this is the problem the Mets have. That start was out on an island. Peterson had given up ten earned runs in his prior two starts. His season-long result has been solid (3.30 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) but unspectacular. The K% is at 21%. He’s not that good. But this is the problem the Mets have.
I would say that Sean Manaea is their best guy, and then there’s still hope for Kodai Senga to get it together.
But I think if the Mets make a run in the postseason, you’ll be seeing a ton of their bullpen. There isn’t a starting pitcher you really want going through the lineup a third time in a big game.
Tarik Skubal and Hunter Greene were as advertised. They both racked up double-digit strikeouts. Greene brings his season ERA to 2.63, his WHIP to 0.93, and his K-BB% up to 27.2%. Brilliant season for Greene.
He’s probably a top-five SP pick next year, right? Or at least right around there. I tried to go to Pitcherlist to see Nick’s top 100 and see where he generally has the top ten, but the ads immediately crashed my browser, and now my house is on fire.
Bryce Miller is back. He has been a mega-bust this year. But he averaged his best fastball velo of the year last night at 95.9 on the four-seamer. It was also a season-best 15 whiffs and a 17.6% SwStr% on 85 pitches. That’s a good sign. Maybe he can pitch more like 2024 Bryce Miller than 2025 the rest of the way home.
The Mariners are in the playoff mix, so they’ll be happy to let him be out there on a regular schedule if he’s succeeding. And if this team gets into the postseason, they’re a tough out. George Kirby got blown up Sunday but has been very good over the last several weeks, Bryan Woo is one of the best in the league, and Luis Castillo is no slouch as an SP3 or SP4.
Could Cristopher Sanchez grab the Cy Young from Paul Skenes?
Probably not, but it’s closer than you might have thought. This award used to be heavily about win-loss record. And now that’s hardly considered at all. And that’s probably right. But I don’t know, I do think maybe Sanchez could get a slight boost since he’s actually pitching on a division-leading team? Maybe not. I suppose it should just go to the best pitcher. In terms of WAR, they are tied. Skenes has a pretty significant ERA and ERA+ lead. So it’s Skenes right now without much question, but I’d say Sanchez is in striking distance.
An 8:1 K:BB for Jacob Lopez against the Twins. He continues to get it done, and it’s hard to say he shouldn’t be highly owned right now. He’ll get the Mariners on the road and then the Rangers at home for his next two starts.
Your softest upcoming schedules:
Maybe Jack Flaherty can finish strong for those of you he’s been messing with all year. That guy must be tough to roster. But he’s coming off of a very good start and will get to see the Royals for his next two. The model likes that schedule, as you can see.
Toughest upcoming schedules:
Some of the hottest hitters:
What Shea Langeliers has done is nothing short of astounding.
I called him Cal Raleigh Lite during draft season. That looked about as dumb of a take as you could imagine before the All Star Break. But since July, it’s been more like Raleigh being Langeliers Llite.
A three-barrel game for Aaron Judge. That’s a nice turn-around to see. Not sure if it will mean anything. And it doesn’t really matter for fantasy purposes. If you have him, you’re starting him no matter what kind of slump he might go through. I mean, if Aaron Judge lost his left arm, I feel like you’d still have to start that guy in 15-team leagues.
Michael Harris II with another one. These plots are so wild.
No walks in August. He’s just smashing everything he gets to hit.
There are just so many ways to skin the baseball cat. You can have two guys with opposite approaches putting up the same stats. You can swing at everything and have an .800 OPS (Pete Crow-Armstrong) or you can swing at nothing and have an .800 OPS (Taylor Ward).
And that’s where we’ll end it today.
