You have probably seen it, but Kade Anderson is getting the call-up. Easily the best pitching prospect in baseball, and he’ll get to debut on Saturday at home against the Cubs. I think it will go pretty well for him, but you can’t say for sure. He’s only seen AA hitters so far. He’s been so ridiculously dominant there that you’d think he’d do just fine against any hitters, but you never know for sure.
He must be added and started immediately. If you don’t do it, someone else might, and they have themselves a fantasy ace for the final month.
I will say that for strict redraft leagues, his impact will be limited by innings. The Mariners draft him just last year, so this is his first season in the pros. He’s thrown 93 innings this year. He threw 119 in college last year. He could make 5-6 starts, I suppose. Averaging five innings a start would keep him under 130 innings for the year. It’s not a huge concern, but if the Mariners find themselves completely out of the playoffs race, there won’t be much reason to push their rookie.
But it’s nice for the wait to finally be over. I’ve been wasting a roster spot on the guy for like a month now, so this better work out!
Jacob deGrom hit 2,000 career strikeouts, and then added eight more after that for one of his best outings of the year.
→ 6.0IP 1H 0ER 0R 10K 1BB
We will give him the player of the day award for that. He’s not much of a fantasy baseball story. If you have him, you’re starting him, there’s not much to say. But I guess it offers a sigh of relief if you do have him. It wasn’t going super well lately. His start got delayed with another little injury thing, and he had given up five runs in 3.1 innings a couple of starts back.
He has a 24% K-BB% but a 3.77 ERA. Only 12 pitchers have at least a 22% K-BB% in 15+ starts. deGrom has the second-worst ERA of that bunch.
So he’s been kind of unlucky. But he has given up a 1.2 HR/9 as a fly ball pitcher that throws four-seamers and sliders. I think that’s who the guy will be, it just seems like he’s given up the homers at unfortunate time this year to have an ERA this high while being so elite with the K% and BB%.
He’s 38 now. But he threw 173 innings last year and he’s on his way to 150 or so this year, and he’s still dominating. So I guess he’ll be a top 20 or so SP for next year as a 39 year old. That will be a tough click to make, I think.
Gavin Williams - 5.67IP 4H 2ER 2R 11K 3BB
Kind of a weird one for Williams. 11 strikeouts but three walks, four hits, two runs, and coming up short of six innings. He’s been very similar to deGrom, we saw him in the picture above.
32.4% K%
7.7% BB%
1.45 HR/9
You’ve gotta handle all three elements to be a super-ace. Gavin keeps giving up some dongs.
Home Runs Allowed
31: Nola
29: Imanaga, Springs
27: Littell, Mikolas
26: Sugano, Kelly, Taillon
25: Bibee, Williams, Singer
24: Eovaldi, Freeland
But Gavin is a top 12 SP for next year and the path is clear to him finishing the year with a big volume September and a bunch more strikeouts. He was an awesome pick in fantasy leagues this year and looks like an ace for some time to come in Cleveland.
Gerrit Cole - 6.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 8K 1BB
Another impressive one from Cole. Eight strikeouts against the Orioles, who are a very good matchup these days.
Cole has returned in great form. He is better than he was in 2024!
→ 2024: 25.4% K%, 7.4% BB%, 3.41 ERA, 1.13 WHIP
→ 2026: 26.6% K%, 5.3% BB%, 3.11 ERA, 1.07 WHIP
I did not see that coming. Cole is 36. Hall of Famers age gracefully, and that’s what we’re seeing with Cole. Although I’m not sure he’s actually a Hall of Famer, but he at least had/has that kind of physical ability.
Randy Dobnak - 4.0IP 6H 0ER 0R 4K 4BB
Case in point: Dobnak threw four scoreless against the Athletics. Jacob Wilson is out for the year now, joining Kurtz, Langeliers, and Soderstrom. It’s been brutal for the A’s. Here was their lineup from last night:
And yeah they scored two runs against a bad collection of Royals pitchers.
That’s gotta be the worst lineup in the league right now by a significant margin. I would be streaming pitchers against them even in Sacramento.
But Gage Jump let me down. I thought he’d have a good outing against the Royals.
→ 4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 3 SO, 3 BB
Not a trustworthy guy, but it won’t be all bad for him. It hink he’ll just do what he’s been doing, up-and-down, you never know what you’re going to get type stuff.
Grayson Rodriguez - 7.0IP 5H 0ER 2R 6K 2BB
Oh my, seven scoreless for G-Rod! That was against the Astros. An embarassing development for Houston.
The four-seamer cooked, though. 96.2 on the velo, 17.5% SwStr%, .244 xwOBA. It’s a decent fastball at this point. Nothing else worked very well by the numbers, but he got through seven innings. Pretty surprising/impressive that he did this while throwing so many fastballs. That’s Misiorowski-type fastball usage, and he does not have that kind of fastball, needless to say.
His 54% four-seamer usage is the tenth-highest usage of a single pitch for any starter over five starts. Bryan Hudson isn’t really a starter, that hardly counts.
If you’re Jacob Misiorowski with 103-104 in the tank, you can do that. But it’s not advisable for many other guys.
Shane Bieber - 7.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 7K 0BB
Bieber has suddenly been pretty good. Three really good starts in his last four, five in his last seven.
Second half stats: 3.66 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 18.7% K%, 9% BB%, 0.84 HR/9
I wouldn’t touch him in fantasy leagues, but he’s showing that he’s not completely broken down.
George Kirby - 3.33IP 9H 6ER 6R 3K 2BB
Yikes, man. The Mariners are a mess. Woo is hurt, Miller and Kirby are in the pits… this was really bad for Kirby against the Brewers. He’s up to a 4.18 ERA on the year now with a 1.35 WHIP. So his WHIP is gone:
2022: 1.21
2023: 1.04
2024: 1.07
2025: 1.19
2026: 1.35
WHIP’in ain’t easy, I guess. Hopefully my cousin Kade can teach these guys a thing or two.
Look at Spencer Jones with a swipe and a pipe!
He might be figuring some things out as the Yankees have let him have some run in the starting lineup. He’s hitting .213 in August with a 33% K%, so hold your horses, but hey two bombs and four steals!
And Zach Neto made some big noise with SEVEN RBI. The Angels scored 18 runs against Peter Lambert and company.
And some of you were probably excited to start Lambert against the Halos! Cruel game!
Five hits for Neto. It’s been a more quiet season for him, but he’s at 21 bombs and 17 steals now.
The K% is up, the AVG is way down, so he has not been a fantasy stud by any means, but getting to a 25-20 season even in a down year is very valuable and we’ll take the discount we can get on Neto next year after a decline in AVG that will usually snap back up to the career average.
I’ve got a long drive and a fantasy football team to draft, so I’ve gotta get going!
