Watched Good Will Hunting this weekend. This is one I’ve seen before. Probably a handful of times. I gravitate toward the movie type where there’s an unlikely genius who gets himself into trouble but then gets out of it, and there’s a happy ending. I don’t think they make movies like that anymore (although I wouldn’t be the one to know). That movie is a deeply moral one. Will knows he’s a genius and he knows he could go get a fancy job and make a bunch of money, but it doesn’t appeal to him.
People make their professions the center of their whole lives. They derive their purpose from it. So it makes no sense at all to see someone reject a good, highly esteemed profession in favor of something that appears more lowly. The professor who is ripping his hair out in jealousy of Will and confusion about why he won’t enter into the type of life that he would like is really the picture of the story of that movie. That guy is fully hung up on his mathematical success and what more he could accomplish. And it just looks pathetic. You solve some hard math equations in your life, who really cares about that at the end of the day?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trading in my keyboard, and I do quite enjoy and appreciate the more than decent financial living I’ve been afforded. But I’m glad to not cling to any of it. I could make way less money and be the exact same level of happy. None of this day-to-day really matters all that much to me.
We have a guy named McCade Brown about to debut tonight. Something happened 20-25 years ago where parents just went hog wild naming their boys Cade and Jackson and stuff.
Brown is a Rockies pitcher, so I can stop there. But hold on, hold on, check him out!
A 24.5% K-BB% in 20 starts in the minors this year! He has not seen AAA yet, and that’s a big deal. Rockies pitchers will usually start to die in AAA.
Rockies Organization ERA by Level, 2024-2025
A: 4.16
A+: 4.26
AA: 4.04
AAA: 6.37
MLB: 5.74
I didn’t even think the numbers would be that stark when I decided to look that up; that is hilarious.
So congratulations, McCade, your career is just beginning, but in another way, it’s just now starting to end.
Although it does beg the question. I’m sure Kyle Freeland is pretty happy with his life. I don’t think he’ll regret anything when he hangs it up. He’s hung around as a Major League pitcher for a decade. He’ll win no awards and have a big league resume he won’t be bragging about, but just being in the Major Leagues is pretty awesome and he’ll be set for life financially as long as he manages it.
Would you rather be a fringe-type player in a good organization or a main player in a terrible one? I guess different people would have different answers.
The Cade that matters is Cade Horton. He ripped off another great start yesterday.
6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 7 SO, 1 BB
That gets his ERA to 3.07 with a 1.17 WHIP in the bigs this year. He’s clearly a key part of the Cubs rotation from now on. He’s given up just two earned runs since July 9th. But we’ve talked a lot about him. We know that he’s been incredibly lucky, but a 7:1 K:BB is impressive even against the Angels.
The Pirates stopped Mike Burrows at 57 pitches, ruining the fantasy stream. The Pirates front office has no regard for anybody but themselves, man.
Andrew Abbott had another bad one, giving up six earnies on eight hits.
Shut up, Grammarly!
He has still had a nice year for the Reds with a sparkling 2.62 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.
The old timers are loving Abbott this year. They think they’ve really got something. And maybe they do, but Abbott is clearly not a sub-three ACE TYPE pitcher.
Unless he can really manage a 10-12% HR/FB for the rest of his career with a .260 BABIP. Then maybe he can be pretty good. I just don’t get how he can limit homers to the extent he does as a fly ball lefty in Great American Ballpark! But I’ve said that over and over.
Aaron Nola got 16 whiffs in a quality start.
6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 6 SO, 1 BB
He went heavy to the curveball against the Nationals, and it worked.
As an aspiring Phillies fan, it’s great to see, but also pretty scary that Nola will likely be the SP2 in the playoffs now that Zack Wheeler is down for the year. And you have to wonder if Wheeler will ever return to good form. He’s headed for that Thoracic Outlet surgery. And that is a surgery that has wrecked a few prominent careers in recent memory (Strasburg & Matt Harvey).
It’s a surgery that nobody understands. Even the surgeons who perform it don’t know what it is.
Thoracic refers to the middle section of an insect, as we all learned over and over again in 3rd grade.
Outlet is the pass that you make after getting a defensive rebound in basketball.
And then surgery refers to “cutting into”. Put all of that together and you get something about the middle of an insect making a basketball pass to cut into something. And that’s why nobody knows what this surgery is. But we wish all the best for Wheeler.
Before I go… I’ve wasted a lot of time about Will Hunting and making dumb jokes about insects. But Jack Leiter deserves a shout.
7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 10 SO, 0 BB
We more or less thought that Leiter would be mostly bad this year, but with some spike starts when everything is working and that velo/stuff is blowing guys away.
He has not put up a good stretch of starts this year.
In recent outings, he’s been a 3-4 inning guy. He has just a 22% K% and an 11.5% BB% on the year for a poor 4.04 JA ERA.
So this one start wasn’t a part of a larger general improvement as the year has gone by. So nothing really changes, but good for Leiter to show that ceiling.
That will do it, I’m off to church!
