It’s hard to write about season long fantasy baseball as we get near the last few weeks. Nobody is really for the long-term buys and sells. You can’t trade anymore, you’re mostly just fighting for your life on a daily basis. And we covered a lot of the streaming picks yesterday.
The Emmet Sheehan thing worked out better than I could have imagined.
7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 10 SO, 1 BB, 20 Whiffs
That’s a sick, sick start. He is up to a 27.6% K% now with an 8.2% BB%. That’s a 19.4% K-BB%. The JA ERA is 2.92, his SwStr% is at 14.8%, and the Ball% is solid enough at 36%. Those are all really nice numbers, and this guy is pretty available in fantasy leagues. Good for you if you streamed him. I did so, but it’s too little, too late for your boy JA in the home league.
Another huge outing of the night was Edward Cabrera. He dominated the Braves:
7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 10 SO, 2 BB, 0 HR
He has not been consistent.
But the K-BB% is up to 19% on the year. He has a nice 26.5% K% and a really surprising and impressive 7.5% BB%. He might be the most improved player of the year.
The leaderboard are pretty wild today. Cristopher Sanchez, Tarik Skubal, and Joe Ryan all got hit around. Skubal was saved by the unearned run, but he gave up seven hits and six runs. Otherwise he was completely dominant with 21 whiffs, a 21.2% SwStr%, and a 12:0 K:BB. He just gave up a grand slam at the end of his outing.
I will continue to say that I think the Yankees really have something with Cam Schlittler. He was great again last night.
6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 8 SO, 3 BB
He’s at a 3.40 JA ERA now with a 26.3% K% and a 10.9% BB%. The walks have been a bit of an issue. The GB% is fine at 46%. It does seem mostly about a lack of precise command. He has 19 walks in his seven outings, so that’s playing with fire a bit especially in the small ballpark. A couple of walks and a homer ruins your outings in a hurry. But Schlittler clearly has the ability to be a very effective big league starter.
One other surprise yesterday was a really nice outing from Ian Seymour. One of the three Seymours the Rays have going. They had two on the field last night. Which is weird. But we won’t get hung up on it.
5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 8 SO, 1 BB, 14.9% SwStr%, 61.2% Strike%
The issue we have is that he threw just 67 pitches. So there’s a low ceiling there. But he did get through five innings with hyper efficiency, and a really impressive 8:1 K:BB at that. That’s a lot of strikeouts for just 67 pitches. Here’s the season pitch mix data (MLB):
Not much velo, a lot of changeups, and nothing fascinating in the Ball% department. But he’s a lefty, so we have to think that maybe he can beat the underlying stats like many crafty lefties do. Here’s the delivery:
You do have to wonder if hitters won’t just figure it out. The more you see the guy, the less the funky delivery messes with you. But Seymour is interesting. He’s a decent grab in fantasy leagues where you don’t need the guy to pitch into the sixth inning.
Bryce Miller pitched again. He kept the velo above 95, which was good to see once again. He generated 14 whiffs and a 17.3% SwStr% with a 27.2% Ball% on 81 pitches. He did give up four earned runs on six hits, but the underlying stuff is looking sharp. Here’s what he’s done these last two:
Love that 17.5% SwStr% and 27% Ball%. He gave up three homers last night, and that’s never going to work, but you know that there’s plenty of randomness in that sort of stuff. I’d be pretty interested in starting Bryce Miller through the end of the year, and I suspect I’ll be drafting a ton of him next year.
Three barrels from Junior Caminero. He has gotten better and better as the season has gone on. He ‘s now at 39 homers with a .261 batting average and a 94-RBI season. Seems like he sail to 43-homer, 110-RBI season or something like that.

You have to love the high intensity of the fantasy baseball playoffs. Roto leagues just don’t compare. I mean roto leagues are clearly the most fair and sensical way to run a fantasy baseball league. I’ll give you that. But they are boring. I wish I didn’t have to play in any of them. I’m completely terrible at the NFBC drafts, but I will continue to do like 12 of them a year because I just can’t help myself when there are drafts available in January-March.
One of the sounds that gives me the most nostalgia in life is that ESPN ditty when a fantasy draft starts on their website. There are like a million reasons to not play fantasy sports on ESPN, I know, but old habits die hard. I’ve always played on ESPN, I have all of our league history there, and I’m just so used to it that there’s my default when I make leagues.
We drafted the MLB DW Fantasy League last night and it was great. Granted, it’s not quite the same feeling of excitement as when I was like 15 and just first really getting into it. But it still hits me. I love fantasy sports. And I’ve learend a lot of life lessons from them. I told that to my in-laws a few weeks back and they thought I was making a joke. In fairness to them, I usually am making a joke. But I’m serious about it. It’s not like fantasy sports is the reason that I turned out to be a somewhat decent and successful member of society, but it certainly didn’t hurt me!
If you’re getting geared up for fantasy football season, check out my new Substack over there at Follow The Money Fantasy Football. I have some projections, a nice ADP tracker dashboard, and a Draft Buddy G Sheet you can use for your drafts. I will turn my attention to week one projections, plays, DFS previews, and a ton of other stuff very soon.
But I am primarily dedicated to finishing the fantasy baseball season strong for you all. But if someone wants to let me know what kind of content would be best for the rest of the season in these daily notes, I’m open to ideas. I really don’t know how best to help you at this point in the season.
Back later with more!

*Those of us
I think the best thing for none of us still reading these columns, would be player analysis that can help us get a jumpstart on next year.
Plus, DFS content and last-minute waiver wire suggestions.
