Player of the Day

Well nothing make sense.

Gavin Williams - 1.33IP 6H 5ER 5R 3K 1BB

Jacob deGrom - 3.67IP 6H 8ER 8R 2K 5BB

Two of the best pitchers in the game in great matchups got lit up, the Twins got kinda shut down in Sacramento. Nothing went according to plan last night.

The man of the day was George Kirby, who showed back up in a home start

→ 7.67IP 6H 1ER 1R 9K 1BB

20 whiffs, 21.7% SwStr%, 27.2% Ball%. That’s Kirby at his best. His fastball averaged 97.9, his best velocity of the year. He threw that four-seamer a ton. Seemed like he just got sick of being bad and decided to pitch again.

You’re not going to have many bad starts when your fastball is humming like that. But will he able to repeat that? Why did he wait this long to throw hard again?

Back to deGrom’s disaster. He had no command with a 48% Ball% and he left a bunch of pitches in the hitting zone. The .380 xwOBA allowed was very high.

But he didn’t give up a homer or a barrel. So there’s some element of bad luck there. Just a bunch of balls in play that found the ground. Probably nothing to worry about with deGrom, but these are pretty crucial weeks in head-to-head leagues, so that hurt.

Gavin Williams still was getting whiffs (14.5% SwStr%) and only walked one. But a .516 xwOBA allowed and he gave up two homers. Both Williams and deGrom have played with fire this year allowing a high number of homers. And they were timed poorly for Williams last night.

No reason to panic on either guy, that’s just the way this game goes.

Good news for Paul Skenes. His velo popped up a bit. He was down below 96 last start, and this time it was 97.2. He threw six scoreless innings!

→ 6.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 4K 0BB

14.9% SwStr%, 36.8% Ball%. Good news there, maybe he’ll give you some useful starts as we finish things up.

Taj Bradley - 6.67IP 7H 4ER 4R 11K 1BB

He threw an immaculate inning in this one and racked up 11 strikeouts against that horrible Athletics lineup. More proof that you can start decent pitchers against the Athletics even in Sacramento, and you can start even the kinda bad pitchers against them outside of Sacramento.

Matthew Liberatore - 4.0IP 8H 8ER 8R 7K 1BB

K well this was terrible. The projections loved this guy. I played him in DFS, I started him in my home league. And the 7:1 K:BB was very good. But eight runs on eight hits. Two homers, gave up a three-run bomb to Pete Alonso and then another to CES. Lib is not a trustworthy man, but I keep finding ways to get crushed by him.

Brandon Pfaadt - 6.67IP 6H 4ER 4R 3K 2BB

Not too bad here against the Cubs, but just three strikeouts and two walks. I think the magical run is over. But this was a very tough matchup, you don’t really want to be starting pitchers against the Cubs right now.

Tyler Glasnow - 5.0IP 6H 3ER 3R 7K 0BB

Gave up four hits and three runs right away, but locked it down after that. A 7:0 K:BB, 15 whiffs, 16.9% SwStr%, and 89 pitches. Looked mostly like normal Glasnow to me, and he’s always been an excellent pitcher when healthy.

He should be started in all leagues.

Michael King - 7.0IP 5H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB

Pitchers duel between King and Skenes in San Diego. This was a great work for King with 15 whiffs and a 30.6% Ball%. Apparently Oneil Cruz homered off of Mason Miller to win the game for the Bucs.

King’s down to a 3.17 ERA with a 1.17 WHIP on an 11.8% K-BB%. He’s given up just 18 homers this yeasr which helps the ERA. He hasn’t been great, but 156 innings of those ratios will help most fantasy teams.

Aaron Nola - 6.0IP 3H 2ER 2R 7K 3BB

Another quality start, seven more strikeouts. He did do the thing where he walked a few and gave up a homer. Cal Raleigh hit another one. But this was a win for our Aaron Nola recommendations. He has a 32:8 K:BB in his last four starts (23 innings). That’s a 34% K% and 8.5% BB%. And he’s limited it to only one home run allowed in each start… baby steps.

So I’ve got a rough day ahead at the real job and I’m picking up Starts & Sits this week, so I’ve gotta go! More daily notes tomorrow!
