We have another addition to the main tableau dashboard. A subscriber suggested it to me yesterday, and I liked it enough to run with it. We can measure pitcher dominance by looking at how often they get into certain counts. The idea was to find the percent of PAs the pitcher gets to an 0-2 or a 3-0 count, and then make those a rate. We can then subtract the two to see the biggest differentials. This is pretty similar to K-BB%.
I’ve added it to the main pitchers tab. So it’s big time! It’s hard to get on that main pitchers tab. I had to remove a few things to fit it in. We’ll see what I decide on for the offseason. It might be better to just make a whole new tab for count analysis stuff. But for now, you can find it here:
You can also highlight columns and then hit “Keep Only” to get a better view:
I’m calling it “count dominance”, which is a good name, but it’s too long. Always good to see Skubal and Sale on top of a metric you’re hoping is telling of real life skill. The correlation between K-BB% and this metric is .68, here is that shown with a scatter plot:
Hunter Brown stands out there as a guy with a really poor count dominance but a really good K-BB%. I’m not sure what exactly that means. But I’m not going to sit here and analyze it to death today!
Nick Lodolo returned. It wasn’t a great box score result.
4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 6 SO, 1 BB, 18.4% SwStr%
It looks to me like that walk was an intentional one. I know that because there is a zero in the “BB” column of the SP report, but a “1” where the box score line shows.
Let me MAKE SURE that’s what happened.
So yes, Nick Lodolo intentionally walked Miguel Rojas. Which is really weird. Why would you intentionally walk Miguel Rojas? Must have been a unique situation. Looks like he was trying to set up a double play ball while he was really in a pinch in that bad fourth inning he had. Classic.
The Dodgers got to him, but he earned a ton of strikes and whiffs, so you’re starting Lodolo with confidence the rest of the year. And this guy might be a top 30 or so SP for next year. He has a 3.04 JA ERA, a 19.3% K-BB%, a 44% GB%, and a 22% COUNT DOMINANCE. I don’t like writing that, so I probably won’t cite it very often. The league average is 19% by the way.
Cade Cavalli got 15 whiffs. That’s a 19.7% SwStr%, and a decent 48.7% Strike%. He walked just one in his outing. But then there’s also the thing where he gave up eight hits including four homers and had an absolutely terrible outing. He scored -45 points on my bench. Which was lucky, because I didn’t bench him on purpose. I just didn’t look at my lineup in time.
It was just the third time this year that a pitcher went for 15+ whiffs while giving up 4+ homers.
Cavalli has been getting whiffs (14.6% SwStr%), but the K% hasn’t followed (19%), and he’s been crushed to the tune of a .350 xwOBA and a .519 SLG.
I suppose it’s worth saying that Shohei Ohtani threw 87 pitches and was great.
5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 9 SO, 2 BB
I do believe that the Dodgers have said that he’s capped at five innings during the regular season. He was pretty easy to not use as a pitcher in those leagues where you can choose. But that’s less easy now. He was sharp with a 16.1% SwStr%. The guy now has a 32.8% K% with a 4.5% BB%. He has the fourth-highest K-BB% of pitchers with at least 10 starts. It’s not really fair to say that Ohtani has made the 11 starts he’s had, because so many of them were just a couple of innings.
But yeah, Ohtani is the clear 1.1 pick next year again, especially where you can use him as both a hitter and a pitcher. There might be a case for Judge over him if you’re only talking about Ohtani as a hitter. But we’ll see, we’ll see.
Nolan McLean looks like a stud. He’s probably not, but he looks like one so far.
8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 6 So, 0 BB
He got those 24 outs on 95 pitches. Very efficient. He posted an elite 25.3% Ball%.
He’s now at a 22.2% K-BB% with a 2.36 JA ERA on a 12.5% SwStr% and 34.3% Ball%. That SwStr%+Ball% combo wouldn’t predict a K-BB% that high. But the 66% GB% he has helps things drastically.
The pitch mix:
Seeing that, you have to start wondering where these strikeouts are coming from. He’s throwing 55% sweepers (9.9% SwStr%) and sinkers (4.1% SwStr%). So that’s more than half the team throwing a pitch he’s unlikely to generate a whiff with.
The command has been pristine so far. He’s clearly dotting up the edges and earning some extra strikes in that way. But you have to always hesitate when you see something like this:
Nolan McLean 2025
Minors: 27.2% K%, 10.7% BB%
Majors: 28.8% K%, 5.5% BB%
There are weird things in AAA with the different methods of calling strikes and balls, and that can skew the walk rates. But no, I don’t believe that McLean is really a 28% K% and 6% BB% guy in the Majors with what we saw in the minors. His stuff is great, but he didn’t have this kind of command in the minors, so it’s almost sure he doesn’t have it in the Majors.
Positive variance can come at any time. Even right out of the gate. So I think that’s what we’re seeing. Does that mean you shouldn’t start him next time? No way! We can go to the SP Planner tab of the Streamlit app and quickly find his next two matchups:
I would call the Tigers a manageable matchup right now, but he’ll be in for a tough one in Philly after that. But you’re rolling with him. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you if it doesn’t go well. But if it does go well, also don’t say that I did warn you.
Wouldn’t it be something if the Mets end up with McLean and Jonah Tong as their headliners in the postseason? At this point, it’s kinda looking like they should be open to that idea.
How about that for Tong? We’ll see him tomorrow. He’ll be the first 12-year-old to pitch in the Major Leagues.
I think he turns 13 in September, and I’m guessing that we’ve seen a 19-year-old pitch in the postseason at some point. But he could very well be one of the first teenagers to ever pitch in the MLB playoffs. Good for him.
There’s a little bit of Tim Lincecum in that guy. The boyish face, the crazy over-the-top delivery.
Lincecum was a fun time, man. One of the most electric pitchers of that generation, at least in my memory. Big Time Timmy Jim. That commercial was so funny. ESPN used to be so good.
Those This Is Sportscenter commercials with the athletes were so, so funny and clever. Why can’t they make stuff like that anymore? I mean I’m sure it’s expensive to get athletes in commercials, but I can’t imagine that’s the reason. Is it just a lack of talent? A lack of motivation to be humorous? The fall of SportsCenter is one of the more… I don’t know the word for it… telling? disappointing? things of my life. Or at least my life in conjunction with interactions with the culture. I’m not saying that I’ll be thinking about it on my deathbed. But I do think I’ll use that example as a way to teach my boys something about life. I don’t know, maybe I’m being ridiculous here. But just go on YouTube and watch old episodes of SportsCenter, and then watch one from today. How can anybody say that it hasn’t gotten like 100x worse?
I guess the key point is that big companies don’t even have customer satisfaction as their main goal. There’s so much collusion and pressure from other entities that the customer kinda just takes it on the chin sometimes.
What’s really funny is that the highest strikeout rate of Lincecum’s career was 28.8%, and his career rate was 24.4%. 29% is good, but it’s nothing that you tell stories about in today’s league. Let’s look at those 2009 leaders:
2009 K% Leaders
Lincecum 28.8%
Verlander 27.4%
Javier Vazquez 27.2%
Jon Lester 26.7%
Zack Greinke 26.4%
Clayton Kershaw 26.4%
Yovani Gallardo 25.7%
Jonathan Sanchez 24.9%
Ricky Nolasco 24.8%
Dan Haren 24.5%
Back when 95mph was a wicked fastball, a 25% K% was a wicked K%. I had a Tim Linceum Giants shersey. I was real into collecting those in college. Gabriel Brothers (clothing store) used to sell them real cheap so I’d go buy every one they had that almost fit. The roster, from what I can remember
Travis Hafner
Jake Peavy
Brandon Webb
Chone Figgins
Nick Markakis
Chase Utley
Magglio Ordonez
Geovany Soto
Joey Votto
Tim Lincecum
Pedro Alvarez
And at least a handful of others I no longer remember. I had an Evan Longoria jersey that I got from this shady kid in high school who would order jerseys from overseas for like $10 and sell them to us for $20. I remember being real skeptical that I’d actually get the jersey, and back when you’re 17 years old, $20 is hard to part with. That’s a big purchase. But it came. It was just like an adult XL, so I basically couldn’t wear it. I looked so dumb.
And this Luis Morales had a great outing
7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 7 SO, 2 BB
He has made five appearances in the Majors now. That was after posting a 29.2% K% and a 9.6% BB% in the minors with a 3.73 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.
The Major League profile:
Huge fastball velo, but not much command of it so far with a 42% Strike% and 38% Ball%. Disappointing SwStr% on the sweeper as well. Looks like a kid with strong raw stuff but not much ability to locate it. The JA ERA sits at a pretty poor 3.65, and I think you’ll continue to struggle with WHIP if you’re using that guy Also, the 32% FB% shows that he’ll probably give up some homers and have some really rough outings.
If you can get any hitters against Jack Kochanowicz in your lineup from here on out, you should do whatever you can to do it. The Angels keep having to use him to cover some innings, but man, he’s been bad. He’s given up 21 homers in 111 innings with a 6.73 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP. The K-BB% is at 2.7%. He’s given up 27 hits in his last 12.1 innings.
He’s scored -27.2 fantasy points in August.
The Twinkies take the top spot for softest upcoming SP schedule against.
I opened that resource up to everybody yesterday. I’m just such a good, charitable person. What can I say. These things do change quite a bit from day to day. The Twins get Nestor Cortes next, but imagine that tomorrow the script runs and sees that they’re likely to face Garrett Crochet or someone at the end of the list. That changes that number quite a bit.
I like showing the hot & cold hitters thing from the Streamlit app.
Mark Vientos homered again last night. As did Ozzie Albies. Those two have really hit themselves back into some good graces lately. Their draft stock for 2026 is rising in a hurry, probably.

Good notes column today. We all know why Sportscenter is terrible nowadays, but it’s not enjoyable to talk about. (For the same reason that it’s terrible now) - Sports and Politics don’t belong together.
I don’t just mean them telling us who to vote for or that a certain person is horrible (but that sucks too). It’s also bc it alienates people away from the company who differ from the acceptable mindset. A lack of diversity in thought almost always leads to poor outcomes.
