Can a hitter be better against better pitching as compared to worse pitching? That is the question we have today with what Colson Montgomery has done since getting to the Major Leagues.
2024-2025 Colson Montgomery
Minors: .215/.319/.398, 30% K%
Majors: .256/.304/.547, 27% K%
To his credit, he did have a pretty nice 86% Zone Contact rate in AAA this year. He also had really turned it on down there in June, going .281/.338/.672 with 6 homers in June (although still a 31% K%).
I’ve also been told on X that he made a change to his swing and that may have directly preceded these improvements. So we have moving parts here. He might not be quite the same hitter right now he was two months ago when he was putting up those really bad numbers in the minors.
It’s a tough call, but all things considered I just can’t imagine this keeps up. The zone contact rate in the Majors is 76%. That’s well below the league average of 83%. It’s not impossible to put up good numbers with a Z-Contact% like that, but it puts a lot of pressure on hitting the ball with authority when you do get to it. Montgomery swings the bat really, really hard, so he can be a guy like that. But no doubt about it there will be streaks here. He’s a Teoscar Hernandez type bat, I think. You’ll get homers and stretches of great production, but you’ll also have to undergo some really rough stretches because the K% is so high.
There’s also the possibility that Major League pitchers figure out a weakness and start exploiting it.
The question for now is, should you own him in your fantasy league? I would have to say YES. But that’s only if he’s easy to get on your team. I wouldn’t be letting go of valuable players or resources (FAAB money) to get him, because I think we’ve probably just seen the best stretch that he’ll have this year.
Joe Boyle struck out just two batters in five innings and had just three whiffs. That was a 4.2% SwStr%, by far the lowest of his season. He’s also thrown just 77 and 71 pitches in his last two starts, so the Rays might be treating him as just a “twice through the order” guy.
It’s really not good to see a low strikeout total from Boyle. It’s just one start, but he’s now down to a 24% K% in the Majors this year. That is not going to work for him. While he’s had all sorts of improvement in command this year, he’s still not a good command pitcher (40.3% Ball%, 9.3% BB%), so he needs those strikeouts. There’s also the angle that he’s a fly baller (36%) in Tampa, so he’s going to give up some homers (although he’s only given up two so far this year on a very low 9% HR/FB).
Basically the only way Boyle becomes and remains a very good fantasy pitcher is with like a 30% K%, and that’s not what we’ve seen.
Jack Perkinsi made his first Major League start and it sucked! A 12.9% SwStr%, a 41.9% Ball%, and three walks in just three innings. He threw 62 pitches, his highest count of the year. That’s a good sign, and I still have interest in him if he’s truly going to be a traditional starter, but it wasn’t a great first look at the guy as a starter.
The pitch mix:
Working as a reliever will almost always jack up that SwStr%, but 16.4% is really high. That’s a great place to start from. If he can keep it around 14% and manage the ball rate while maintaining a somewhat good GB%, he’ll be a useful SP option. That’s a lot of “if” though. Chances are he’s not going to be a positive difference-maker on your fantasy teams down the stretch.
The patience on Dylan Cease was finally rewarded. He went five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts against the Cardinals. Brilliant start (one hit, one walk).
You may have noticed that on my MLB & MiLB Stats Dashboard, Mason Miller’s name has his ID number next to it:
My script does that any time it finds a name that two or more players in pro ball have. So I always knew there was another Mason Miller somewhere.
We took the kids to the South Bend Cubs (A+) game on Saturday night. So it’s the bottom of the first and I look up and who is on the mound for the Quad City River Bandits but a guy named Mason Miller! I found him - in real life!
It was a real experience for me, you know? Here’s that guy’s pitcher profile page!
I told my wife all about it. She pretended like she knew what I was talking about and cared.
Sean Burke had a really good start, as you’ll see below. I was talking about him a bit before the All Star Break. He’s not good, and I wouldn’t want to use him in a fantasy league in a vacuum, but it’s true that he has improved as the year has gone on.
He posted an 11.7% BB% in the first two months, but since June 1st it’s down to 8.1%. And he’s kicked the K% up to 24.8%. That’s a pretty decent 16.7% K-BB%.
He’s been more of a “slightly above average” arm in these eight starts rather than someone you really want, but hey that’s a big improvement and step forward from a young pitcher. Good to see. The White Sox are certainly on the uptrend.
Logan Henderson has been called up to the Major League three times before Bubba Chandler has been called up once.
He was not super sharp yesteday.
4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 4 SO, 2 BB, 76 pitches
But still a 13.2% SwStr% and 32.9% Ball%. He’s thrown 25 innings in the Majors this year with a 33.3% K%, an 8.1% BB%, a 15.1% SwStr%, a 32.4% Ball%, and a 1.91 JA ERA.
Maybe it will all fall apart. It’s not like this is a super convincing sample size, but I’d be starting Henderson in every fantasy league possible for now.
His fastball has been elite with a 16.1% SwStr% and 58% Strike%. It’s hard to not have success when you have a fastball like that. So if those numbers stay up in that range, you’re in the money. And then he drops in a good changeup with 4% usage.
It’s a bit of a two-pitch mix, but there are three other pitches in the quiver at least that he can mess around with.
I think Henderson will a great SP to buy for next year, and it will be fun to see what he can do down the stretch. He very well could end up making postseason starts.
Luis Gil returned, and it was bad.
3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 3 SO, 4 BB
A 42.9% BAll% and a 6.5% SwStr%. We should be patient and forgiving in situations like this, of course, but Gil has never had good command and is fully reliant on strikeouts and soft contact to have success. It’s a Boyle situation. If he’s not punching out something like 30% of the guys he’s facing and getting a lot of soft contact, the numbers are going to be disastrous. If I had him, I’m not sure what I’d do. I don’t want to start him right now, but I also don’t really want to wait two weeks to let him settle in since we’re nearing the fantasy playoffs.
I just wouldn’t have him on my team, that’s the answer. But if you do, and you don’t want to drop him, I don’t know what to say. Maybe sit him one more time and then start him from there on and hope for the best.
That is all I’ve got for today!
