The way you treat your third kid (and beyond, I suppose) is so much different than how you treated your first. I’ve noticed this a lot over the last five years since I’ve had multiple kids. Any time my daughter (firstborn) was in a pool for the first few years of her life, I wouldn’t take my eye off of her. It would be a high-stress situation. We paid a bunch of money to get her swim lessons as a three-year-old, and were super careful and all of that.
Yesterday I took the floatie off my three-year-old (the youngest of three) and threw him in the pool. We had him down to a very light floatie thing and had shown him how to swim, and he had watched his siblings a bunch, so he was ready, but it’s something I never could have done with my daughter. Just throwing him in the water and seeing what he could do. Obviously, there was no risk to it; I was right there to help him, but it was way too easy to do that. So now he can swim as a three-year-old. I kid you not - I was 13 years old before I was swimming. He also learned how to ride a bike yesterday. My wife does this thing where she just wraps a towel around them and holds the ends of it behind them - keeping their balance for them. And then they get the feel for the bike and figure out how to pedal and like ten minutes later they’re on their own riding a bike.
So yeah it was a big week for my boy! Swimming and riding a two-wheel bike. Not jumping into the pool unsupervised and figuring out how to stop the bike… that’s the next hurdle to clear.
The Braves were sort of quiet. They just brought in some role players, basically. Lane Thomas was the big add, and they added some rotation depth wiht Tyler Mahle. Apparently they also went for deGrom, but the future Hall of Famer did not waive the no-trade clause, and the Braves are left with a pretty questionable rotation behind Chris Sale heading into the fall.
The Mets loaded up on some prospects, trading away Clay Holmes, Freddy Peralta, and three of their best relievers. Jefferson Rojas was a nice get from them from the Cubs. He’s their new #1 prospect.
We didn’t exactly know what the Nationals would do. They held on to CJ Abrams, but did cash in on the Foster Griffin and Luis Garcia Jr. breakouts. Griffin went to Cleveland and Garcia ended up with the Yankees, where he homered in his first game. Makes sense to me, always have to like the sell high. The Nationals could maybe make some noise in the next couple of years with some nice pitching prospects coming up through their system.
The Phillies added Arraez, and paid a big cost, and also added a little bit of bullpen help and took a shot at Colby Thomas, a guy who had a lot of success in AAA as a power hitter, but hasn’t done much in his limited time with the big league club.
This division went crazy. The Cubs added three starting pitchers who will probably go right into their rotation (Holmes is nearing the end of a rehab from injury, Garrett has been very good in AAA this year). They were active. There was a false rumor about them getting Reid Detmers, which would have been one of the biggest adds of the whole deadline. But now they set up their rotation with Imanaga, Holmes, Gausman, Garrett, and Matt Boyd. Still not a top-of-the-league rotation, but it’s a unit without any clear weakness and the Cubs are a much more competitive team now for October.
The Pirates added four relievers to fix their horrid bullpen situation. Mitch Keller’s season is done as he goes on the 60 Day IL. They’ll move Carmen Mlodzinski to the rotation and they did more than enough to replace him in the bullpen. That’s a rotation upgrade in addition to a massive bullpen upgrade, so I like what the Pirates did. They lost basically nothing prospect-wise, and the Mets are paying most of Weaver’s salary for this year and next.
The Cardinals were sellers, and they did a very nice job. Tim was very pleased with his team getting Eagan (for Nootbaar) and Ragsdale/Frias for Dustin May.
The Brewers add May to their rotation, and we like their chances of getting some very nice production from him the next couple of years. It still felt like a missed opportunity to not get Skubal, but it’s a pitching upgrade for them nonetheless. And with Misiorowski + Henderson as the top fo the rotation, you like their chances of hosting the NLCS and seeing what they can do against the Dodgers.
The D’Backs sent away a valuable pitching prospect in Daniel Eagan to get some outfield help. Lars Nootbaar was the return, which doesn’t seem right to me, but what do I know?
The Rockies refused to become big-time sellers again, holding onto Jake McCarthy and others we thought they’d trade. But they did ship Doyle and a pair of relievers who could have some success outside of Coors.
The Dodgers didn’t have to do anything, and they were quiet after the Skubal addition on Saturday night. The Kris Bubic add was out of nowhere, it will be interesting to see what they do with him next year. He’ll probably be blocked in the rotation, and maybe he’ll just end up as a reliever for them or be flipped to someone else after he gets healthy this winter.
The Padres bulked up the rotation with Robbie Ray and Casey Mize. They hate prospects, and they traded a couple of their few decent ones. Kash Mayfield was the big name there, from what I know about prospects. He was their top pitching prospect, and now he will be a part of the Tigers’ plan to replace Skubal (good luck!). A much-improved rotation in San Diego now, and they did not deal from their bullpen strength.
The Giants sent Heliot Ramos packing to the Yankees. That’s a huge upgrade for Ramos’ fantasy value getting out of AT&T Park and replacing Bellinger in that outfield. I’d add Ramos everywhere if he’s available. It was also a nice lottery ticket getting Marcelo Mayer for a reliever, and Ramon Marquez is a pitching prospect to know. He’s probably more of a 2028 landing, but his numbers in the lower levels of the minors are stunning this year, and San Francisco is an awesome place to pitch.
The Orioles got a haul for Adley Rutschman. They were probably one of the biggest future-winners of the deadline, but obviously a lot of things have to happen for that to be proven true. Really nice prospect package coming to Baltimore, though. They loaded up.
I didn’t care for the move for Rutschman, but the Red Sox had a glaring weakness at catcher, and they have a legit big league backstop there now.
The Yankees helped ease the burden left by the Bellinger/Judge injuries with Ramos being their guy now, and Luis Garcia should help get Ryan McMahon out of that postseason lineup. Jazz moves to third and Garcia fills in nicely as a 2B (bad defender though).
The Rays were buyers. They didn’t go crazy, but Peralta + Hicks are upgrades (probably), and they held onto their favorite prospects.
The Blue Jays replaced Gausman with Jose Soriano and got Daulton Varsho’s contract shipped over to Houston for the ugly return of Arrighetti. Tim liked the Arjun Nimmala get for the Angels in return for Soriano. Seems to me like the Blue Jays are reducing some payroll without getting a ton worse for next year.
The White Sox add a Gold Glove centerfielder and a veteran rotation piece in Luis Castillo who they will not have to pay. But pretty quiet stuff from this division, generally.
Cleveland adds several big leagues. Griffin boosts the rotation, and Lowe & Adell should be pretty regular starters for them as they try to do something to get a lineup that can score some runs as they try for another division win. They’re three games behind the White Sox in the division.
The Tigers return for Mize & Skubal was fine. It was very good according to some, and pretty uninspiring according to others. But they did probably what they needed to do in getting Smith, Ryan, and Mayfield as pitching options and bagging Zyhir Hope - one of the best prospects moved at this deadline.
The Twins were very quiet, holding onto Joe Ryan and focusing mostly on bullpen help.
The most quiet division by transaction count. The A’s sat on their hands and gave up on Colby Thomas, which is fine, they haven’t been able to find an outfield spot for him anyways and Brent Rooker will be back next year.
Daulton Varsho changed dugouts last night and started for the Astros against the team he was on just hours earlier. It’s been since George Springer that the Astros have had a legit centerfielder, and now they have Varsho to help there.
The Angels went pretty hard as sellers, which they typically don’t do. But they did a fine job, lots of decent prospects coming back. They replaced Logan O’Hoppe with Moises Ballesteros, but maybe not right? Can Ballesteros actually catch? The Angels don’t seem to care much about defense, so he fits in nicely!
Unfortunately for Kade Anderson, the Mariners held on to Kirby and Hancock, and now that’s still very much in the air. I don’t think we’re going to see Anderson this week, but the jury is still out. I’d hold onto Kader for another few days to see if we get any clear news. Taylor Ward hits his third team ten months, but a tough landing spot for his offensive production going to Seattle. Nolan Jones is getting thrown around a bunch, and now he’ll go murk AAA pitching in the Pacific Coast League.
The Rangers floated a bunch of names out there but ultimately didn’t do much.

Ian Seymour - 6.0IP 7H 2ER 2R 9K 0BB
I got crushed in DFS last night going heavily to Schlittler and Sproat. The projections really like Seymour, but I didn’t trust them! A 9:0 K:BB in Coors and 90 pitches for the Rays lefty. He had been opened for the previous two times, and hadn’t been doing super well in July, but a nice bounce-back here with a big Coors outing to go for 27 fantasy points.
Cam Schlittler - 3.0IP 4H 4ER 4R 6K 5BB
The Cardinals came in super cold but teed off on Schlittler. Five walks, Alec Burleson hit three bombs in that game. 13 runs for the Cardinals:
Ten RBIs from Burleson + Nathan Church. Schlittler didn’t have teh command and the Cardinals were all over his mistakes.
Logan Webb - 6.0IP 5H 0ER 0R 8K 1BB
Good Webb in Texas! 16 whiffs was his season high. He had a season-high usage of the cutter. 13% for the year, 25% last night. It didn’t work great, but maybe it helped the sweeper get disguised or something, because the sweeper was awesome for him.
He threw five pitches above 14% usage, and that’s a good approach from Webb. This might have just been a matchup thing, or maybe he wants to accentuate the cutter now since his season hasn’t gone super well.
Brandon Sproat - 3.0IP 5H 4ER 4R 4K 2BB
I watched the beginning and end of that game, with an episode of The Mentalist sandwiched in there. But I saw Sproat get yanked in the middle of an AB, and it wasn’t about an injury. He was super, super wild yesterday. He threw two straight wild pitches and the manager just said I’ve seen enough of that and came out and yanked him on a 2-1 count. Maybe that happens more than I think, but I was laughing pretty good at it. Pat Murphy was pissed and said yeah give me that ball we’ll let someone else clean up this mess.
Pirates won though! If they win this series in Milwaukee I’ll stop shopping for Brewers hats, I think.
Justin Wrobleski - 4.33IP 7H 7ER 7R 4K 3BB
The Cubs are a tough matchup at home, especially for a left handed starter. They took Wrobleski deep four times, and now that’s eight homers given up in the last two outings. That’s as many as he had given up previously.
His first 16 starts: 0.67 HR/9
His last two starts: 6.97 HR/9
New season total: 1.23 HR/9
I think they’ll just keep him in the rotation for now, he’s certainly earned it with this season, but there’s no way he’s in that playoff rotation so they’d probably be open to moving him to a relief role before long.
His numbers don’t look like anything special now:
So I thought he was bad when he was good, and by the time I accepted that he’s actually good, he’s bad again.
Cristian Javier - 6.0IP 7H 3ER 3R 2K 0BB
Okay so Javier got it done. These last two outings in 11 innings:
The fastball is working and he hasn’t walked anybody, but look at that 55% FB%. Lots of risk there, but a 16.9% SwStr% eases that burden. I don’t think it can continue, I think the guy is probably still awful. But he’s in the rotation now. The Astros shipped off Arrighetti and didn’t bring in any starters, so maybe there have been some tweaks that can work for Javier.
Shane Bieber - 5.67IP 9H 1ER 1R 6K 2BB
How do you give up nine hits and one run?
It was just the fifth time this year a pitcher has 9+ hits allowed and less than two ER.
That’s quite a strand rate, I guess. At least Bieber did get six strikeouts and two walks. But I’m super mad about that game because I thought it would be a shootout, and it was 3-1 despite 17 hits and five walks.
Imai was the piggyback for Javier, and he got the job done.
Maybe that’s what he needs, maybe he’s a good reliever. Maybe he just can’t handle all of the attention.
20+ point games:
My two big DFS stands were to fade the Rays and play Schlittler. So that was embarrassing. I might just go back and delete that post and act like it never happened.
Yandy took a big 0/4 with 15 hits and 13 runs around him. Caminero hit two bombs, Aranda had four hits, and even Taylor Walls had a big game.
Burleson had just the tenth three-homer game of the season
Burleson is very good, and he’s having his best season. He should clear his previous max in HRs and he his OPS is up to .835 now for a career-best by a good margin.
Did you see the Giants lineup?
They scored five runs and won the game easily, but man look at those names. How many would start for the Dodgers? How many would make the roster? Probably only Willy Adames would have a chance to start, maybe Jung Hoo Lee (who homered twice) in the outfield, and they’d probably have to find a spot for Rafael Devers, but that’s gotta be the worst lineup in the league for the rest of the season.
