Travis Adams made a start for the Twins and went five innings with a nice 7:0 K:BB. He’s been in the minors and in the Major League bullpen this year, but now he’s in the Twins rotation after all that has happened in Minnesota.
His numbers aren’t very impressive anywhere this year, so I suppose this isn’t much to talk about.
He had put up good marks with the four-seamer in the Majors so far, but it’s only 91 pitches with middling velo.
So alright, nothing there I guess. You always get a little excited when a lesser-known name pops off near the top of the leaderboards in the daily notes.
It’s pretty wild how south this season has gone for the Twins’ pitching staff. Joe Ryan has his been great and is still there and healthy. But that’s the only good news. Lopez has missed most of the season, and they traded away their entire back end of the bullpen is honestly strange fashion.
And they haven’t gotten the breakouts from Festa and Zebby that we thought would happen. They went from one of the better pitching staffs in the league ahead of 2025 to a pretty rough-looking unit for 2026.
Jason Alexander is another guy who popped yesterday. He has been in the Astros rotation this summer, and yesterday he did his best work against the Marlins.
6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6 SO, 1 BB
But he’s a 32-year-old journeyman with an 18.8% K% on the year, so it’s another case where there is not much to talk about for fantasy purposes.
Kerry Carpenter went BOOM yesterday, making me look pretty good. The suggested props in the slate preview went 4/5, shout out to me. It’s always a good idea to make sure people know when you have a good day. It’s way less important to look back after a bad day.
It’s also nice to just take a bunch of -150, -200 etc. lines that are likely to hit but not pay out very much and then brag about your overall hit rate rather than profit margin. These are nice tricks you can use to make yourself look like a legit handicapper without actually being one!
Producer Lee calls him Kerry Bonds, although I doubt Lee came up with that on his own! But Kerry Bonds is now slugging 1.050 since returning from the IL (21 PAs, three homers).
Brayan Bello had another mediocre strikeout game but another great result in run prevention. He went six scoreless against the Royals. The guy now has a 2.26 ERA in his last nine starts. But the K-BB% is just 13.3%. That probably means he’s been very lucky, and hey we can check that out right on the dashboards now!
He does have the 12th-lowest RISP H% since June 15th. The .244 BABIP is also low, HOWEVER he really is generating soft contact with a .238 xBA and .297 xwOBA allowed. He’s doing good things, and he is getting some strikeouts while limiting walks. Maybe Bello has finally found the right pitch mix and attack mode to succeed consistently in the Majors.
Eric Lauer went in Coors.
6 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 4 SO, 1 BB, 0 HR, 1 W
Another qual-bang-daddy. He keeps getting it done, and it keeps being really weird and surprising. He’s just the seventh pitcher to exceed 20 DraftKings points in Coors Field since June 1st.
If the Blue Jays make the playoffs… is Eric Lauer their SP1? That would be insane! They’d probably give it to Kevin Gausman or Max Scherzer if he’s healthy, but Lauer has been arguably their best starter this year. Scherzer does have the better JA ERA, but in half the innings.
Quinn Priester is a #winner. He has won nine of his 11 starts since June 1st.
The Brewers are either geniuses or cheating or doing some kind of dark, demonic magic. Probably geniuses.
Sandy Alcantara baby. The Marlins kept him, and he kept doing what he’s been doing for them.
7 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 5 SO, 1 BB
I bet you want to know who leads the league in raw earned runs allowed this year. I certainly do.
Speaking of trades, the Cubs probably had the worst deadline in the league. They added Mike Soroka and Willi Castro. Which was weird since they clearly have a shot at a deep playoff run here in their one season with Kyle Tucker (unless they extend him). You would have thought they’d really gun for it, but they did basically nothinge. And now Soroka is heading to the IL and we might never see him again honestly. The velo was 94-95 early on, and it’s been falling lately and was under 90 last night on his few fastballs thrown before he was removed.
It’s a dead shoulder, and the Cubs should be embarassed. And it’s my fault honestly. I was kind of starting to have warm feelings about the Cubs. I live in a place where there are a lot of Cubs fans. The Cubs are probably the favorite team in this area. And I like Kyle Tucker and Shota Imanaga and Jameson Taillon and some of these other guys. So in my head I was like “yeah I could root for the Cubs”. Which is an insane thing to think and I have since repented. The Cubs are lame.
I am all in on the Phillies. What an electric environment. It looked like they friggin sold out a Monday night game against the Orioles. They were going crazy there. Kyle Schwarber hit two more homers to draw within two of Cal Raleigh for the league league. He’s slugging .593 this year with 40 bombs. Incredible story, great team, great crowd, great environment.
Mark Vientos might be coming slightly alive.
In the second half so far:
.277/.286/.404, 20% K%, 2% B%, 13% Brl%, .280 xBA, .346 xwOBA
Better. He’s barreling it up at least, and that’s a good combination with the lower K%. That’s one thing he has really fixed this year. He’s dropped his K% a ton. Unfortunately, the power went away with it. Not a good trade off, in that case.
Here are your hitters who have dropped their K% by at least five points this year (compared to last year).
The craziest part of the daily notes today might be that the Cubs have four of the top five guys here:
That means the Cubs have been unlucky in these last three weeks. Some luck numbers for the second half Cubbies:
Do with that what you will, I have to go now.
