Check out yesterday’s box scores here
The Angels and Orioles both sold Major League hitters at the deadline. Neither offense was good before that, and what we got last night was a pitcher’s duel between Grayson Rodriguez and Cade Povich.
That’s two decent starts in a row from G-Rod now.
→ 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 2 BB vs. HOU
→ 7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB vs. BAL
His changeup has been really good for the last two outings. We’re still not buying it in any way, but he’s figuring out how to get some outs in the Majors and maybe he has a Major League future after all. Not as a good pitcher, but as a guy who will be in the Angels rotation for lack of better options. He’s averaging almost 97 on the fastball the last two and his changeup is quite good
Good for Grayson, hard not to root for the guy, I guess.
Here’s the pitch data from Povich last night:
Threw a lot of strikes, got ground balls, and didn’t get hit hard by this putrid Angels lineup. Here’s what that looked like last night:
Neto
Trout
Schanuel
Grissom
Guzman
Ballesteros
d’Arnaud
Siri
Meckler
They traded Adell and DFA’d Soler. So they have very few big league caliber hitters, but it’s possible their team strikeout rate dropped a little bit with those moves.
The debut of Tarik Skubal resulted in a Dodgers LOSS. Their fifth straight!
→ 6.0IP 4H 2ER 2R 6K 2BB
Outdueled by Javier Assad! Some
Skubal was a little geared up and threw harder:
But the Cubs know how to hit lefties and they did a good job. Only 13 whiffs for Skubal.
The biggest score of the night was Jesus Luzardo against a Nationals lineup that looks bad now with Garcia and Mead traded and now James Wood on the IL.
→ 8.0IP 4H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB
Here was that Nationals lineup:
Pretty rough. Crews/Chaparro/House as the top three. It is likely to be a rough final couple of months for the Nats.
And Luzardo is having a nice season for the Phillies. The Wheeler + Sanchez + Luzardo trio in the playoffs could take them somewhere, but they’ll need a big October from Schwarber and Harper to go anywhere.
Logan Henderson - 6.0IP 4H 2ER 2R 8K 1BB
The guy is very good, and the Pirates offense is bad right now.
Pirates hitter stats since the All Star break:
That team strikeout rate is rising, as Trevor pointed out yesterday in The Daily Slip. It’s been rough for Esmerlyn Valdez as the league has figured something out against him. A 36% K%, still those four homers in the second half but now he is homerless in nine games.
Henderson is extremely good. His fastball has an elite 57% Strike% and a 14.4% SwStr%, and the changeup is one of the best in the league. Two pitches above a 125 MLB DW grade there:
And that’s with the guy being like 5’10’’ and throwing 93mph. The Stuff+ on the fastball is bad, but the Brewers really know how to develop an effective four-seam fastball. Misiorowski’s velo and extension helps a lot with that, but they’ve gotten elite fastball numbers from Harrison at 95mph and Henderson at 93mph, and even Sproat, Drohan, and Gasser have strike rates above 50% with their heaters.
I would say that four-seam Strike% is one of the most important stats in pitching. Here are the leaders in that, with a 500 pitch minimum enforced:
Strike% is called strikes, whiffs, and foul balls. I don’t count balls in play in my Strike% calculation like other data people do. It’s a very similar stat to CSW%, the only difference is that mine includes foul balls as well. I’d guess those two things are basically perfectly correlated. I checked myself on that, and it’s not quite as stark as I thought it would be:
In terms of correlation with K%, they’re dead even:
The stats are interchangeable. My dashboard use Strike% just because I didn’t want to be copying someone else’s stat. Ego thing.
Emerson Hancock - 6.0IP 8H 3ER 4R 6K 2BB
Not great for Hancock. Eight hits and two walks, but a quality start. The Mariners got blanked 8-0 by the Tigers. Who needs Skubal and Mize anyways?
Seven scoreless from Melton with three hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
We just want to see Kade Anderson, don’t we? Maybe it’s just me since I’ve had him stashed on my roster for a few weeks now..
He last pitched on July 31st, so he’s due to pitch again soon. They have Woo and Miller lined up for their next two games, so I guess it’s not going to happen this week if they want to keep Anderson a 5-6 day pattern. Anderson’s with the Arkansas Travelers, and they’re currently hosting the Amarillo Sod Poodles. I’m guessing he’ll make another start in AA in the next few days, the Mariners still have a solid five-man rotation in the bigs so they don’t need him imminently. But maybe, just maybe he’ll be their Friday starter.
Lots of bad pitchers had decent outings last night.
Randy Dobnak has a 96.5% LOB%.
Troy Melton is right there at 95%. This is a very lucky thing going on with these two. Only a few percent of the base runners they put on are scoring. It’s not something you can continue.
The highest in the league last year (qualified SPs) was Freddy Peralta at just 85%.
It’s a good stat. Better pitchers will have better numbers here, because they are harder to hit in all situations. But low-80s is seemingly the best you can do over the long haul.
Troy Melton ERA = 1.58
Troy Melton SIERA = 4.08
He has been by far the luckiest pitcher in the league by the way I calculate it.
It’s the trifecta of luck stats. High strand rate, low BABIP, low HR/FB. I think this is a guy who I will be fading hard in drafts next year, assuming that he’s going to end up as a top 25 SP or so.
The least lucky pitchers in the league according to this:
Paul Skenes is there. Freddy Peralta is there (and he got trucked in his Rays debut last night in Coors). Jack Leiter, Luis Castillo, Will Warren, Aaron Nola, and Emmet Sheehan are the other somewhat interesting names for fantasy leagues.
Two pretty big name prospects debuted last night. George Lombard Jr. took over for Volpe as the Yankees shortstop. He homered and walked while hitting 8th for the Yanks. His minor league numbers did not make him look like a good option for fantasy leagues, but he started the career off with a bang.
The other guy is Hector Rodriguez, a Reds outfielder. He played right field and hit 7th for the Reds, going 0/2 with a walk and a run scoerd, and he was removed for TJ Friedl late, probably because a lefty came in. HRod had big time splits in the minors.
So I don’t think you’ll see Hector in the lineup against lefties at all, and he’ll be a guy getting pinch hit for. But the power is legit and he absolutely mashed righties down there this year with a 17% K% and a .988 OPS.
We saw Heliot Ramos hit fourth in his Yankees debut. I have to say that he was one of the big winners of the deadline. Going from SF to NYY is a huge park upgrade, and a pretty big lineup quality upgrade as well. He didn’t do anything with it as the Yankees fell flat once again while I stacked them heavily in DFS. They won the game 2-0 but had just five hits and two those two runs in eight innings against Hunter Dobbins and Caleb Ferguson.
I like Ramos a lot for fantasy leagues, though, if he’s going to continue to hit clean-up. And Dobbins is a righty, so it’s even better news for Ramos that he hit clean-up even without the platoon advantage.
The big hitters of the day were mainly Red Sox.
The Durbinator in a grand slam in the first inning as the Red Sox bullied Davis Martin.
Davis Martin
First 11 GS: 1.99 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 3 HR, 22% K-BB%
Last 11 GS: 6.79 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 7 HR, 5% K-BB%
I would love to hear from somebody who traded Davis Martin late May or early June. That would be a story to tell your grandchildren about someday.
Red Sox regulars since July 1st:
It’s all good right now in Red Sox land, even though that Curtis Mead trade blew up in their face immediately as he broke his hand in his second game.
And shout out to Liam Hicks who grand-donged in his Rays debut. He hit fourth for them.
And I once again faded the Coors Rays in DFS because I thought Gabriel Hughes was good enough to pass on the high-priced chalk Rays hitters. I’ve gone COLD in DFS, but that’s the way she goes. Sometimes she goes, sometimes she doesn’t.
Goodbye!
