My wife and I finished watching all the seasons of Top Chef recently. It took us like a year and a half or something, usually watching one episode a night after the kids are asleep. We don’t watch much TV here! But we ran out of episodes, and we’ve been going to old movies. I talked about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang here the other day. The next one is Jurassic Park; we finished it last night.
I don’t want to become a movie critic, but I’m open to anything. The truth is that I’m probably the least interested person in movies that you’ll ever meet. Name a classic movie, and I haven’t seen it.
But now I’ve seen Jurassic Park. I don’t care for the horror aspects of it and all of the death. That’s just not up my alley, I guess. I don’t know, I was pretty sheltered as a kid, and maybe that makes a difference in what you can stomach later in life. So much of that movie is just sitting there waiting to see if the person will get eaten by the dinosaur or not. I’m not much into the action scenes; I kind of just want to hear and see the story played out.
But the moral and ethical aspect of it is all very interesting, and I appreciate that they worked that in there. This line:
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”
I think that’s the point the moviemakers were trying to make. Or maybe not, maybe they just wanted to show dinosaurs eating people. But they stumbled across a real profound question there, and it’s super applicable to our modern day. We have done amazing things with science and technology, but we’ve clearly (clear to me, at least) crossed lines already. We have children being created in wildly unnatural ways. And there’s a good to that, I like babies and I like people reproducing, but there are wrong ways to do it. We could argue about where that line is, but everybody agrees there’s a line somewhere. I’ve heard stories about the embryos getting accidentally swapped and then you’ll have two mothers giving birth to someone else’s child. Creepy stuff. One pair of moms didn’t even find out that they’d been raising each others babies until more than a year into it.
And then that Jim Acosta guy interviewed an AI version of one of the kids who as tragically killed in the Parkland shooting. I guess the kids' parents fed some of his writings and recordings and stuff into an AI model, and it spun up a bot that you can talk to, and it would reply and carry on a conversation with you. That interview seems to have outraged pretty much everybody. It’s so weird and creepy and awkward.
I suppose, though, in an agnostic or atheistic worldview there’s no guardrails that make much sense so long as you’re not hurting anybody and your end result is perceived as positive.
In my view, there are serious dangers and consequences to an improper fear (more reverence rather than fear in our language) of God. That’s certainly not the point that Jurassic Park was trying to make, but that’s the point I’m trying to make!
Hitters should have a proper fear of Edward Cabrera now, amirite!? He smoked the Braves’ last night.
We had him to record a win in the slate preview last night, and that cashed with ease. It was a great night for those picks. I’ve been having a lot of fun getting into some plays and analysis when I have the time in those. I dropped the paywall so everybody can take a look here.
E-Cab:
8 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 11 SO, 1 BB, 1 HR, 1 W
These plots will tell you all you need to know:
The walk rate is down under 8%. We can officially stop calling him Edward CaBBrera. He has a 12.9% SwStr%, a 37% Ball%, and a 49% GB%. That’s a really strong trio.
I hadn’t noticed this year, but he has really lowered the fastball usage. He’s throwing 48% changeups and curveballs. Career low fastball usage. Check the red line:
Cabrera has always been a weird pitcher. And he’s weird enough to reduce fastball usage and then drastically reduce the walk rate. That usually works the opposite way. The fastball is the easiest pitch to throw for a strike. But I’m not going to argue with the results. He’s at a 1,729 pitch sample now.
I do think he’s a 9-10% BB% going forward given the 37% Ball% and the volume of the non-fastballs, but he’s looking like an easy top 40 SP for next year, which I never saw coming.
Chase Burns did it again. Ten more strikeouts. That’s his fourth ten-punchie game in a row as long as you forgive him for that NASCAR whatever game disaster where he threw one inning between monsoons. He’s at a 37.7% K% in 34.1 innings now. And last night he gave up just three hits, one walk, and no homers.
The updated JA ERA for Burns is 1.83. Which doesn’t evne lead the league because of Tarik Skubal and Brandon Woodruff.
Incredible stuff, incredible pitcher, and he will be one of the best in the game while he’s healthy. Let’s just try not to think about things like elbow surgery with guys like Burns, Skenes, Misiorowski, etc.
J.T. Ginn struck out a career-best nine! I watched some of it! I got to see him in the flesh. Well. I got to see his flesh through a screen. I also got to see Tomoyuki Sugano in that same game. It’s wild to see these guys who you know so much about but have never watched before. I mean I can predict with like 80% accuracy exactly what they’ll do next on the mound, but I’ve never actually seen them do it with my own eyes.
I think Ginn can be a pretty good pitcher someday. The sinker is heavy and it has a ton of movement. It just looks like one that’s really hard to hit, and the numbers bear that out with a .342 SLG allowed on the pitch on a .306 xwOBA.
The key point for him, I think, will be crafting either the changeup or the slider to be a putaway pitch for him. Last night, it was the changeup. He threw 21 of them (24% usage, a season high) and put up a sick 33.3% SwStr% on it. If he can develop a consistently dominant changeup to go with that sinker, he’ll be near the top of the A’s rotation for a long time.
Aaron Civale was hot before last night’s game. He was near the top of that trending players list, and he had thrown 17.1 scoreless innings with a 20:3 K:BB in his last three starts. But he gave it all back last night. All of it! Here’s his White Sox career thus far:
He came in with a 3.56 ERA with Chicago and turned that into a 4.91 mark after those nine earnies.
Here’s today’s table of hot and cold scores for our daily probables.
Here are your hot and cold hitters:
The streamlit app is so good and has so much future potential. I think that’s the best thing I’ve developed other than the daily projections.
I suppose the best thing I’ve made is the general idea and structure of these automated posts that I add on to.
The automated section of these daily notes, the lists you see when I’m done writing every day, those were the whole reason I started this Substack in the first place. I just had this idea to have a Python script generate a bunch of leaderboards every day and print them out, and then I’d grab them and copy and paste them into here and publish them. I wasn’t even going to write anything at first. I was looking for a quick way to publish something useful every morning.
And that one little idea turned into everything else going on here. Pretty cool.
Joe Ryan has had a little tiny bit of a rough patch.
He has just 14 strikeouts in his last three starts with a 21% K%, and they’ve all been pretty soft matchups.
He had an uncharacteristically low whiff count last night of just SIX.
Nothing to say or do about that, I suppose, just wanted to point it out!
Kodai Senga is not giving the Mets much hope that he can anchor their playoff staff.
He posted a 29.1% K% in that 2023 season. That made up for his 11.1% BB%, enough for him to put up some pretty good numbers. But now, the K% is down to 22.5% and the walk rate is up to 12%.
The SwStr% is mediocre at 12.3%, the ball rate is awful at 40.2%. It’s not a good situation. He’s hard to hit, and will probably continue to be with that splitter, but it won’t help that much if he can’t earn strikes.
Brandon Woodruff looks like a playoff ace for the Brew Crew, though.
He’s thrown 465 pitches now with a 30.2% K-BB%, and we saw his league-leading JA ERA already in these notes.
The four-seamer has been insanely good with a 60% Strike% and a 20.5% SwStr%. Who needs mid-90s!
I don’t really even think you need me to talk about hitters here! And certainly not on a Saturday. The below reports give you a ton of stuff on hitters now after the key additions I’ve made this year.
Check out the Contreras brothers lining up right next to each other in recent xwOBA OE!
How cute!
Who is this Jakob Marsee guy? That’s a funny way to spell Jacob! He’s a Marlins player, here are his minor league stats:
And here’s the advanced Major League Hitter Profile:
Hard to see, but it’s okay you don’t have to look because it’s just 29 PAs. The 91.4% Z-Cont% and 104.3 EV90 are nice signs early on. The advanced AAA stuff fromt his year:
Great K% and BB% combo with a strong contact rate and some definite power. Nothing that blows you away power-wise, but a good 38% GB% and 11 HR with a .460 SLG off righties down there.
He’s the Marlins #10 prospect, currently:
You always feel a little bit more confident in a young guys’ MLB success if he’s near the top of the prospects list. I’m not sure if it should, but it does.
That’s someone to watch, I guess! He’s come out of the gate very well.
Enjoy your Saturdays boys and girls!
