Check out yesterday’s box scores here
We have reached the break. I typically enjoy the first day or two of the break since I don’t have to get up and do projections and update reports and then write 2-3 articles. But by like Thursday I’m thirsty for some more baseball.
Some pitchers got pulled pretty quickly yesterday. Namely Payton Tolle as Bryan Bello came in for the piggy back.
Tolle was pitching ridiculously well by the advanced numbers, though:
→ 3.67IP 3H 1ER 1R 7K 1BB
→ 18 whiffs, 27.3% SwStr%, 57.6% Strike%, 31.8% Ball%
Lots of really good signs from Tolle this first half. I guess we have to wonder what kind of volume he can get in the second half, but the Sox are suddenly in the mix with a record of just two games below .500. And Tolle is one of their better SPs, so I think they’ll ride him out. My guess was just that this was a little bit of a breather for him as they prepare for the second half.
Joey Cantillo - 5.0IP 6H 1ER 1R 9K 2BB
Pretty impressive June for Cantillo. His last six starts:
→ 1.59 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 30% K%, 9.4% BB%, 0.26 HR/9
There has been a change recently, and we’ve talked about it before. He has thrown more curveballs as the year has gone on and it coincides with the better performance.
His curveball has a 49% Strike% to complement his really, really good changeup. His fastball is still buns, but he’s limiting it to 36% usage and keeping hitters even more off balance because there’s the extra pitch they have to be wary of. Maybe it can work for Cantillo. I’ll never fully buy in on a guy with this kind of fastball, but he has a 13% K-BB% and a 3.74 JA SIERA for the season now, and those are half-decent numbers. In June, it’s a 19% K-BB% and 3.02 JA SIERA.
Zack Wheeler - 6.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 10K 2BB
He should be an All Star, but I just don’t like that he complained about it. Really impressive stuff from Wheeler, I did not believe at all that he could be the same guy after the offseason surgery. But he has been. He’s #2 behind Misiorwoski on the L60 player rater. Total ace, legendary pitcher.
Ian Seymour - 3.33IP 6H 5ER 6R 3K 3BB
A flat ending to his breakout first half. Just a 10.3% SwStr%. Didn’t have the touch I guess. I’d still be using him in the second half, but there are no guarantees from the guy. He doesn’t get results with raw stuff, he’s just kind of a funky lefty with good command on multiple pitches and that has worked out more often than it hasn’t.
The hitter I want to highlight before we get to the first half fantasy all star team is Chase DeLauter. He had the huge start to the season and then sucked for a bit before hitting the IL. But he’s returned and is hitting .326/.380/.630 in July with four homers. Three homers in his last four games.
His first half numbers:
.278/.345/.448
13.5% K%, 9.6% BB%, 90% Z-Contact%
6.6% Brl%, 41% GB%, 15% Air Pull%
106.1 EV90, 104.7 EV90 on FB
The raw power isn’t there, but it’s enough for him to hit some homers. Maybe a 15-20 homer pace with that kind of stuff going on. But he’s very good at making contact and pulls enough balls to make you think he can push toward a 25-homer pace. He’s a unique and talented hitter. The injury history is crazy, so it’s still hard to imagine he can play 2.5 months consecutively in the second half, and he’s not a base stealer, but he looks like a very, very good points league player if nothing else while he’s healthy. And he should be owned in all leagues for the second half, he’s capable of doing some really special things as we’ve seen in a couple different spurts now.
Alex Bregman also had a good finish to the first half. He hit homers on Saturday and Sunday to get a whopping NINE. That’s halfway to his 18 from last year. The Cubs aren’t pumped about his five-year contract, I’d guess. He’s hitting .238/.334/.357 this year for a .691 OPS. Total mess. In July, he’s still hitting .220 but at least has a .463 SLG. They signed him, I guess, for solid defense and AVAILABILITY with at least some singles and doubles hitting to drive in some runs. His 41 RBI are not what they signed up, but he’s accelerated that rate a little bit lately. In a fantasy leagues, I’m not sure what you do other than stick with him. But in some extreme eight or shallow ten team league, you can find better dudes out there.
But let’s get to the FIRST HALF FANTASY ALL STARS. I want to do this while considering ADP / draft cost.
I will use my standard 5x5 roto player rater and compare with NFBC ADP from the last week of drafts that happened in March. If I miss anything, I don’t care - shove it. This is for fun.
29 bombs, 64 runs, 68 RBI, .279 average. He’s everything people thought he could be. And the early drafters really crushed with him.
He ended up being a 4th-5th rounds pick, but even that has been a smash. The worries about him not playing against / hitting lefties were unfounded. He’s been great all year long and he gets the nod from me.
Hunter Goodman: Went right around the same spot as Rice, but 17 fewer RBIs and 25 points less of batting average put him on the all star bench
Liam Hicks: He was undrafted (ADP 450) and even with an IL stint is at #6 on my player rater. So if you jacked up your draft at catcher (or just punted it) and added him, you smashed.
It hasn’t been a great year for fantasy first basemen. The studs have mostly been fine, but none of them have crushed their draft value like Contreras has. Ben Rice would be in the picture here, but he’s already taken it as catcher, and that is primarily the position in fantasy leagues that he was drafted to take.
Contreras has 20 homers, 61 RBI, a .288 average, and one time being a victim of a hate crime that would have gotten Cade Cavalli imprisoned in the UK!
Honorable mentions:
Matt Olson
Yandy Diaz
Bryce Harper
A .332 batting average is massive when you consider the league average being around .240. And he’s added nine homers and 17 steals to it. He was going around pick 240, so he’s proven to be one of the biggest values in the game this year.
Honorable mentions:
Brice Turang
Brandon Lowe
Curtis Mead
He is behind Caminero on the player rater, but he’s more than close enough to make him much more valuable given his ADP being 280 slots lower. 20 bombs, 11 steals, 62 runs, and 58 RBI for the White Sox third baseman.
Honorable mentions:
Junior Caminero
Sal Stewart
Kazuma Okamoto
In some leagus he went past round six. But his NFBC ADP settled at 50. He’s given 20 homers, 14 steals, a .272 average, 56 runs, and 67 RBI in his true breakout season.
Honorable mentions:
Luis Garcia Jr.
Colson Montgomery
Bobby Witt Jr.
He was FREE in drafts with an ADP greater than 400. Most people that have him now picked him up in weeks 2-4. And he leads the league in RBI with 22 bombs, 13 steals, and a big .291 average.
You got him in the 2nd-4th round and he’s been the best hitter in baseball this year. A .318 average with 31 bombs, that’s Judge stuff.
He’s #1 in the outfield on my player rater. 28 bombs, 15 steals, .279. One of the many breakout career-years the Nationals are seeing in their lineup.
Honorable mentions
Pete Crow-Armstrong - SNUBBED, maybe, but he’s behind the three I chose on the player rater and he was a 2nd-3rd round pick. You’re getting everything you hoped for, though. 21 bombs, 24 steals, 63 runs. Sick stuff from PCA who has made real gains in plate discipline.
Jakob Bauers
Bryan Reynolds
Byron Buxton
Randy Arozarena
Alec Burleson
Brandon Marsh
His ADP was over 100 and he’s been the #1 pitcher in the league by almost every measure. Can it sustain? Will he get/stay hurt? It doesn’t matter for this!
He was right there with the Mis around ADP 120. And he has smashed. 2.05 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 137 strikeouts, 9 wins.
You had to wait a couple of weeks, and at the beginning it wasn’t the most dominant stuff, but he’s gotten back to full Wheeler for the last month or two, and he makes THIS all star team.
The add in standard fantasy leagues probably took a month or so, so you haven’t gotten the full value in real life. But he’s #5 on the player rater and he was undrafted in almost every league. ADP 600 on NFBC.
The ADP was around 320 for Ashcraft, who has returned amazing results. A 3.49 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, 128 strikeouts, and nine wins. The ERA did get bloated by a couple of five ER starts lately, but you’ll take it happily for whereyou got him. He’s #9 on the player rater overall, so he’s been an easy SP1 in fantasy leagues.
Honorable mentions:
Dylan Cease
Chris Sale
Yoshinobu Yamamoto
Chase Burns
Max Meyer
Parker Messick
Drew Rasmussen
Kyle Harrison
He has an ERA that would be considered an elite WHIP plus 25 saves.
The Guards are the perfect team to be a closer on. He’s got himself 28 saves to lead the league
I told you guys to draft him every time! Oh wait, that was in 2024! 19 saves for Varland, but a 1.10 ERA with a 0.98 WHIP and he’s already thrown 49 innings - ten more than Mason Miller.
He’s #2 in the league in saves, which I didn’t think could happen for a Ray. And he was a free pick up in most fantasy leagues.
Honorable mentions
Jacob Latz
Riley O’Brien
Paul Sewald

JA has spoken on the matter and now it’s sealed.
And that’s another first half of the daily notes covered. I will continue going hard on these the whole way until October 1st or whenever the fantasy season ends.
I’m going to try to enjoy my four day break here. Read a book or be a model employee at my real job, or something dumb like that.
But I’ll be back with a HR Derby preview today.
