MLB Daily Notes - July 20th
A daily automated report of what happened yesterday in Major League Baseball, along with other recent trends and further analysis.
The first edition of the daily notes of the second half of the season means we are so back. And what a Friday night it was! Another big DFS night for your boy, thanks to a bit of luck from a big Jake Burger game:
I won a ticket into a $121 contest, so that’s exciting. I’ll use that next Tuesday or something.
The Pirates also had a thrilling win, walking it off in come-from-behind fashion against the Phillies. They are a game above .500 and have won five in a row!
But I couldn’t watch much of it last night. I took the family to the South Bend Cubs game, that’s the Cubs A+ team. I joked about only being able to see about nine or so pitches with one eye, and seriously, that was an over-estimation. It always sounds so fun to take the kids to the ballpark but then it’s always just the most frustrating experience. By the second inning we gave up on trying to sit down and walked around and ended up at the playground thing. And then by 7:45 it was time to go home for bedtime. I was able to eat most of a Philly cheese steak and drink a Modelo, and I did avoid getting ketchup and ice cream all over myself from the kids eating, but pretty much ten minutes in, you just want it to be over. Someday we’ll get there, someday.
Pitcher Review
Nick Pivetta was awesome against the Dodgers.
6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 8 K, 1 BB, 17.3% SwStr%
He’s so good. Pretty amazing what he’s been able to do these last two years, turning himself into a really, really good Major League starter after six or so years of not being able to do much as a starter.
Gerrit Cole is back to form, as we figured yesterday in the slate preview.
6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 1 BB, 15.5% SwStr%, 52.4% Strike%, 32% Ball%
He sports a 50.7% Strike% and 12.6% SwStr% on the year now, getting his strikeout rate up to 27%. And his last three outings he has a 14.4% SwStr% with a 32% K% and a 6% BB%. Great stuff, good to have Cole back. It just didn’t feel right without him. The Yankees are going to be a real problem this year. I suppose they could slip up without having that really strong SP2-SP3 in the playoffs, but they do have high-upside arms that can get going at the right time (Rodon/Gil/Cortes).
Justin Steele got hit around (nine hits, five runs), but otherwise was fine with a 53.2% Strike%, 12.8% SwStr%, 29.8% Ball%. Just a bad luck day on contact. The Diamondbacks seem to do that. They don’t strike out much, just put a bunch of balls in play and cause you trouble. They’re hitting .255 as a team now, that’s fifth-best in the league. They are worse than that in slugging (9th-best), but still a top-third offensive unit. Not a great matchup for pitchers.
Hunter Brown put up six scoreless innings against the Mariners:
6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 5 K, 3 BB
However, the 7.8% SwStr% was really, really low and he struck out just five Mariners. That’s tough to do! He didn’t have his best command with three walks and a 37.3% Ball%. For the year now, Brown has a 46.3% Strike%, an 11.7% SwStr%, a 24.7% K%, and a 9.2% BB%. Those numbers collectively are pretty bad, at least as far as a 12-team league SP goes. But his soft schedule continues; he’ll face the Athletics and Pirates in his next two outings. Keep plugging him in there for now.
Tanner Bibee really struggled, but survived just fine in the box score:
5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K, 3 BB
It’s harsh to call that “really struggling”, but just six whiffs and a 5.9% SwStr%!
I’m not sure if something changed, but all of a sudden, the strikeouts are gone. He has just a 22% K% and 9.0% SwStr% in his last four starts. That was after putting up a 36% K% in his previous five starts. I guess this is one of those stories about guys without great fastballs. He’s not nearly as bad as a guy like Reese Olson, who we talk about all of the time, but Bibee definitely does not have a great heater, and that puts a lot of pressure on the secondaries and opens up doors for potential failures.
He’s still someone you start every time out. He has posted a 3.86 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in these last four, but that stretch of dominance is in the past now.
Edward CaBBBBBBBBBBrera! That’s five walks if you’re counting my B’s. Guy is up to a 39% Ball%, and it’s 41% since coming back from his injury.
Never allow yourself to be sucked in by that guy.
Hitter Review
Jacob Wilson’s debut lasted like four seconds. He left the game with a hamstring injury. But hell he went one-for-one with a line drive single. He swung the bat twice and made contact both times (one foul ball), and now he’ll finish his career with a perfect batting average.
The double-doink nights went to Anthony Santander and Jeff McNeil.
McNeil isn’t much of a fantasy player. He’s hitting just .223/.281/.340 on the year now with seven homers. He should be hitting a better better than that (.245 xBA), but he lacks power and doesn’t steal bags either, so anything short of like a .280 batting average really brings down the production.
As for Santander, he hit his 25th and 26th homers. He’s now tied for fourth in the league in homers this season, and since 2022, he’s 10th-highest in the Majors with 87 bombs.
Oneil Cruz hit a ball 120.5, the second-hardest hit ball of the year. He now has half of the top ten. Only three unique names are on the top ten, with Stanton and Ohtani joining Cruz.
Cruz is now hitting .253/.299/.450 with 14 homers, an 18.5% Brl%, a 32% K%, and a 45% GB%. The launch angles are just a little bit low. Imagine if he was hitting balls this hard with a 40% GB%.
I guess it’s probably tough to hit a ball 120+ in the air. It seems like all of the hardest-hit balls are line drives rather than fly balls. But someday, he’s going to get one 120 at 25 degrees, and it’s gonna be something to watch.
Max Schuemann joined the Athletics in ripping apart Griffin Canning and the Angels. He hit another homer to bring his July slash line to .390/.480/.634 with three homers. The July barrel rate is just 6.3%, which is suspicious. For the season he has a .255 batting average (.216 expected) with a .714 OPS on a .304 xwOBA and a 26% K%. Not much to get into here, just a lucky hot stretch in July, it would seem.
Juan Yepez plays for the Nationals now. He always seemed to me to be a legitimate bat that just couldn’t find a spot in the field for the Cardinals. He hit his first homer of the year yesterday and brought his season OPS to 1.078 in 47 PAs. So he could be someone to look at. Looking back to last year and opening it up to all levels:
So I guess not! That’s a lot of time in AAA and just a .763 OPS down there with a mediocre home run rate. Nevermind!
Is Jake Burger getting it going? He homered yesterday, his fourth of July.
This month he’s slashing .292/.333/.583, but a 33% K%. He’s been striking out a lot more since this year. 31% since June, 27% for the season. That could be okay if the barrel rate were crazy high, but it’s not (season 10.6%, 12.6% since June, 12.9% in July). We can still leave him off rosters in 12-teamers, but he’s on the radar again, finally seeing some balls fly over the fence.
Another dinger from Brenton Doyle, who now leads the “Last 3 Weeks xwOBA” board:
He is up to an .820 OPS on the year with 16 homers and a 25% K%. Such a big improvement from him at the plate this year. He’s now top-20 overall on my player rater, sick stuff.
That’ll do it from me, I’m going to go drop a deuce and make some eggs.
