There was speculation about what the Brewers might do with Mis in this second half. He’s about to reach his innings total from a year ago, and he’s doing that while throwing the ball harder than he (or anyone else) ever has. He was scratched from his final start in the first half and the ASG due to fatigue. They pulled him last night after four innings and 65 pitches.
The good news, I guess, is that he was still dominant and still throwing the ball 102+. He went for a 24.6% SwStr% and averaged almost 102 on the heater. He’s definitely not hurt. But the Brewers showed their hand there. I don’t see Misiorowski throwing 7+ innings now. The Brewers are seven games up on the Cubs for the division lead, and that’s a bigger gap than you might think with 10-11 weeks to play. They’re in the driver’s seat in the division, and their only chance at a World Series run would seem to run through Misiorowski being in there in October.
It could have been just one a one-time thing, I guess. He hadn’t pitched in almost two weeks, so maybe it was just a thing to get him back into it slowly. And maybe he’ll build back up to 90 pitches over the next couple of outings. But how can you not be concerned about this if your fantasy squad is built on him right now?
It also had me wondering about his Cy Young chances. The current odds:

I suppose if he just stays on schedule and makes him start, he’ll be able to hold onto the crown. Even if he’s going five innings per start, it should be enough. His numbers are so far ahead of everybody else right, that I guess it’s fine. But I don’t hate Sanchez at +650, the Phillies are in the thick of the playoff race and will have to lean on him. He just needs to figure out how to dominate away from Philly.
Since we’re on the subject of Sanchez, though, he gave up three more runs last night at home against the Dodgers.

Tough spot for him there, and he did get 20 whiffs with a 7:0 K:BB. Not bad, but it did hurt his ERA even further sending it ALL THE WAY UP to 2.71. 1.15 at home, 4.97 on the road.
The return of Blanco! His first MLB start since last May. And he came out cooing for Houston.
It’s the Arrighetti approach, though. Throwing 60% curves and changeups and hiding that fastball, which is a bad fastball. He’s never been very good:
But he’s always been able to use those breaking balls to get some strikeouts. But he’s had issues with walks and home runs. He’ll be held back by the lack of a fastball, many such cases this year, but Blanco’s back and yeah, he could be a 13-15% K-BB% guy with the good offspeed stuff. Maybe a 15-team league add and a 12-team streaming option.
The Yankees needed length from him last night with their bullpen in shambles, and he did get through 4.2 innings despite giving up the five runs on seven hits. He gave up a tank to Esmerlyn Valdez, and overall had a bad start. But he got 20 whiffs! So it wasn’t all bad.
Weathers and Misiorowski were the DFS chalk. And that didn’t work for people. I played Weathers and Kirby and sailed past the cash line in double-ups once again. That was a bit lucky cause I had Mizz until the last minute, and I got a low-owned Ketel Marte two-run dinger to get me there.
But I thought it was a good play yesterday. Weathers now has a 26.6% K%, a 6.7% BB%, and a .326 xwOBA. That’s a near 20% K-BB%, which is the most important thing. He just has long ball issues with 17 homers given up, and the command is well short of reliable and consistent.
Kinda the same thing with Tolle as Weathers. 16 whiffs, nine strikeouts, but eight hits and a homer given up. The .152 xBA was great, but a .500 BABIP hurt him bad. That’s a lot of bad luck there for Tolle, but we have rarely seen him put everything together all at the same time to have great outings.
He now has a 3.91 ERA, which is fine in real life but not great for fantasy leagues. His JA SIERA is way better than that at 3.00. I keep saying the same things with Tolle. The talent is there to make him a mega-ace, but he needs refinement and consistency with the command, I guess.
Cruised through the Reds lineup. That’s a very nice start for Kirby, and he probably should have had an extra K or two with the 17.3% SwStr% he had. I like Kirby’s chances to have a big second half.
He cranked up the four-seamer usage last night. That’s a good pitch for him with a 51% Strike% on the year at 96.6mph. It has an elite 14.6% SwStr%. The problem is that hit does get hit out of the ballyard (six homers on 513 pitches, .446 SLG). But I think it’s a good thing if he’s going to use it more often.
Tough matchup as a fly ball righty in Philly. But that was bad. He still has a 19.5% K-BB% this year, but he’s given up 17 homers. The JA SIERA is awesome on him at 2.95. So I want to keep saying that he’s a big time buy-low, but at some point you just get resigned to saying that it’s not happening for the guy.
Look at the contrast between Sheehan and Wrobleski:
Sheehan: 26% K%, 19% K-BB%, 5.13 ERA (1.75 HR/9)
Wrobleski: 18% K%, 13% K-BB%, 2.69 ERA (0.72 HR/9)
I’m wondering if maybe the sharpest organizations aren’t trying to find some way to really lock in handling homers. The Dodgers had to know they weren’t getting strikeouts from Wrobleski. So the way to get him to pitch well is to have him rarely giving up homers.
Here’s team pitching data from this year, ordered by HR/9:
Park factors are very important here in home run prevention, so that factors heavily into HR/9 and HR/FB. You can see the Dodgers there being about average in HR/9 and HR/FB. But they have one of the better K-BB% in the league.
I suppose it’s not right to take a TEAM approach in this regard. You probably just develop your pitchers individually to do things that best suit their skillset.
Sheehan certainly has the skill set to get a bunch of strikeouts, but he hasn’t been able to figure out how to keep the ball in the yard. But no doubt, he’s been unlucky too. He has a 24% HR/FB now, which just can’t continue. Right? Maybe it can, maybe there’s something I don’t see.

I’m obviously debating just cutting Sheehan, but I don’t think I can do it. I’ll just ride his five ERA to the end of the season and lose all of my money. At least I can say I’m loyal.
Yikes! Now we start to wonder if Ashcraft is a guy who can handle a six month long season as a starter.
He threw 118 innings last year (total between MiLB and MLB) and now he’s at 116. I’m not sure if we’re seeing the results of that workload, it’s hard to say, but we have seen the guy give up 18 earned runs in his last four starts.

He was probably a sharp sell-high a couple of weeks ago, but that’s going to be tough to do right now. The good news is that his K% and BB% are still good in these last four starts. Just a bunch of homers given up. The schedule hasn’t been easy lately, either. He’s faced the PHillies, Nationals, Brewers, and Yankees during this stretch. So I’m not panicking - but you do start to wonder. It’s really hard to throw 30+ MLB starts spread across six months, and you never know if a guy can do it until they do it.
The White Sox matchup should not be considered a good one right now. They’re fully healthy and have a deep lineup. And they hit deGrom around last night with five runs on seven hits.
Six homers given up. Six! That has happened just THREE times going back to 2021.

That took his ERA up to 3.38 after it was below 2.90 yesterday. He’s given up 16 homers now for a 1.3 HR/9. And that’s kinda what we expected in the pre-season.
This is funny. Ryan gave up a 1.3 HR/9 in 2024 and then 1.4 last year. Before last night, he was at 0.82. Now he’s at 1.3! All is right in the world.
Even worse is that he gave up those homers to the Guardians, who are 27th in the league in homers at 101.
Live by the fly ball, die by the fly ball. Ryan will be fine.
This was a DFS play last night as well for very cheap against the Angels. Leahy did about what was projected/expected. I think he was a good streamer yesterday, and I think his teammate Matthew Liberatore is a good streamer today! Famous last words!
I try not to talk about the same guys over and over again! But Esmerlyn Valdez did it AGAIN. He hit an opposite field dinger off of Weathers that went 436 feet. More on that in a minute.
But yesterday I caused a hubbub on X by pointing out how “lucky” Valdez has been. I mean his placemen ton the xwOBA vs. wOBA plot is something you never see:
So I pointed that out. The guy has a .400 BABIP with a .306 AVG on a .221 xBA. He’s struck out in 38% of his PAs. But a 29% Brl% has boosted him to 13 homers in 122 PAs, which is just insane stuff.
It’s completely unsustainable. Either that’s true, or this guy is Barry Bonds? Which is more likely? I don’t like saying this stuff! I wish the guy had a 19% K% and a .270 BABIP right now. I love the Pirates more than almost anybody. I want them to make the playoffs so ridiculously badly. But you can’t hit .300 with a 35% K%. You can’t hit for a .400 BABIP. You can’t beat your xBA by 80 points.
And you can’t sustain a 29% Brl%, either, by the way.
The best barrel rate season of all time is Aaron Judge in 2024 at 26.9%. So if we loosen the PA criteria to 100 PAs, Valdez has the highest barrel rate of all time.
Juge had a .466 xwOBA in that 2023 season and .481 in that 2024 season. Valdez is at .364.
But people don’t understand what luck is. I guess the term itself is up for debate. Someone told me that he’s not lucky, it’s just that what he’s been doing is unsustainable. To me, those are synonyms. Am I crazy? Isn’t anything you’re doing well that you can’t sustain luck?
Someone else said he’s not LUCKY, he’s just LOCKED IN. Okay, but being LOCKED IN is lucky! The term itself “locked in” IMPLIES that you won’t stay that way. You can’t be LOCKED IN all the time, because we just wouldn’t call it being LOCKED IN then. So when he stops being locked in, he’ll be locked out, or neutrally locked, or something, and that will happen - and that’s exactly what we mean by LUCK in this context.
I guess when people hear me calling a baseball player “lucky”, they think I’m saying that they actually aren’t good. There are a lot of people on X, so you’re bound to run into some people who don’t understand what you’re saying and are upset enough about it to try to fight you. And that’s great. That’s the best part about social media - fighting with strangers. That’s what it exists for!
Someone else on social media also tipped me off last night to somebody taking my projections and my matchups model from the PRO subscription and sharing it daily in their own paid Discord, or something like that.
I think most people would be really mad about that and try to do something about that. But what can I do? It’s the Internet. I make the data available to subscribers and I can’t control what they do with it. I’m guessing this is happening a lot. How would I ever know?
So are you going to get mad about something you can’t control? That’s a bad way to live your life. You can’t control life, you can only control how you react to it, right?
If those persons were giving me proper credit instead of sharing my work as if it’s their own - I’d probably have more subscribers. But what are more subscribers gonna get me?
Money only correlates with happiness up to a point. And that point varies for everybody differently. For me, I think it was like $90K a year. After I crossed that, I’m good - more money does mean a lot to me. I don’t want to live in this constant state of needing more and more of stuff. That’s a path to resentment, discontentment, and depression.
But I guess if you could not sell my stuff to other people - that would be good too.

If you were in the projections yesterday, you saw the spot on Riley Greene. He was one of the easier home run calls of the year. The projection was ridiculous, and he immediately pounded a dinger in the first inning. I even bet $25 on it with a profit boost, shout out to me.
Dingler hit the other two, he had one of the biggest games of the day. That guy has been incrediblet his year. 4/5, 3 R, 3 RBI last night .856 OPS this year. Very good hitter. Maybe even TOO GOOD for a catcher! Maybe they should shut down the catching thing. You can’t have long-term hitting success as a hitter, unless you’re one of the guys who can. Some guys can do it. I doubt Dingler can. I mean look what happened to Raleigh. It seems like every massive offensive season by a catcher is followed by a dud the next year.

Petey Halpin scored 37 fantasy points. That’s right, PETEY HALPIN. I had a pet parakeet as a kid named Petey. I think it ate its own poop too much and died.
This guy plays for the Guardians. He’s 24 and did this in the minors the last two years:
Not a godo hitter down on the farm! And he’s hitting .222/.243/.375 in the Majors this year with a 28% K% and just two homers (yesterday) with four steals. He just took the freebies from Joe Ryan last night, I guess. No reason to care about PETEY for fantasy leagues, but we wish him all the best and advise him to be careful what he eats - it might kill ya.
Trea Turner had 39 fantasy points to lead the day. Two dingers on two barrels. He’s liking July with a .980 OPS and five dingers.
Maybe we’ll see Trea finish strong like he did last year. I love that guy.
Mookie Betts had three runs, two dingers, and three RBI. Good game for him against Cristopher Sanchez and company.
Let’s take a peek:
Betts’ home run rate is way up this year at 4.7%. He’s going for the dingers again, apparently. And that’s good because he can’t really steal bags or hit for batting average like he used to. He’s taking the Altuve career arc, I think. That’s notable though - 13 homers in 64 games is really good.
Jazz Chisholm added two homers, so these early draft pick middle infielders are starting to make up for their first half SUCK. Three dingers in a 22 hour span for Chisholm after he won the Sunday night game with a homer.
10 homers and 12 steals since June began. That’s very useful, although he does still have a K% in the mid-30s.
Chase DeLauter had two doubles and three RBI yesterday for 22 fantasy points. He’s been elite in July with a 1.032 OPS. Four homers, two steals. Showing out again! His season K% is 13%, his season BB% is 9%, and the homers are back after they went away for a long time.
Weird player, weird swing. But he’s stayed mostly healthy and is definitely a must-roster in fantasy leagues. Shout out to me for dropping him right before he went on the IL!
Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit a homer. He’s on the Orioles now.
He looked like a blossoming power hitting star for the Reds heading into the 2024 season:
13 bombs, .805 OPS in his rookie year. And then NOTHING. Absolute dookie.
He has just an .827 in AAA the last two seasons. But he hit six homers in June and added three more in July down there before getting the call-up for the Orioles. And it took him just two games to hit a homer in the bigs. So maybe he’s found a way for that power to play. Probably not, but maybe.
