Check out yesterday’s box scores here
Some pitchers can handle Coors Field! The difference in my projections on those last two Coors games was something to behold. We had a ton of runs projected in the Lorenzen/Palmquist game and then it came wayyy down for the Hughe/Cavalli game yesterday. And Cavalli proved the projections right.
6.0IP 4H 0ER 0R 8K 2BB
Ground ballers have a big advantage in Coors. Pitchers get themselves into trouble with singles, doubles, and triples given up in that huge Coors outfield. But when you keep the ball on the ground, the park factor is largely negated.
Gabriel Hughes has really held his own for the Rocks so far. Yesterday:
5.0IP 5H 1ER 1R 5K 1BB
Here’s Hughes game log:
Three starts in Coors, just three runs given up with a 12:4 K:BB. Not bad from Hughes. The pitch mix:
It’s another ground ball four-seamer, very uncommon. The league GB% on four-seamers is 32%. Hughes is at 47%. He’s no Andre Pallante (70% GB% on FF), but that’s a good thing to see if this guy wants any chance of surviving in Coors Field. It probably won’t happen, and he doesn’t look like much of a strikeout pitcher, but Hughes has shown us good things early on.
Luckily for us, we’ve been on it right from the beginning in the DFS game. I haven’t advised stacking against the guy, which is really the only question you need to answer with Rockies pitchers in DFS. You don’t want to play them hardly ever, but you do want to know when the right time to pay high-priced hitters in Coors against the Rockies is.
Cavalli’s 30 point-performance performance was the best of the last two days. Since I missed yesterday’s daily notes, I’ll look back an extra day.
The other big outings of the last two:
Gerrit Cole: 7 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 11 SO, 0 BB
Kumar Rocker: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 6 SO, 2 BB
Keider Montero: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 8 SO, 0 BB
Tatsuya Imai: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 8 SO, 3 BB
Zack Wheelr: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 9 SO, 0 BB
Justin Wrobleski: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 7 SO, 1 BB
Logan Henderson: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 9 SO, 0 BB
Luinder Avila: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 7 SO, 1 BB
The Kumar Rocker experience is a wild one.
He can pitch well, at least we know that now. You can’t trust it for next time, and his season K-BB% is just 12% with a 1.12 HR/9 - so the numbers aren’t really there.
Since mid-May, he has a 15% K-BB% with a 7.4% BB% there and a 3.54 JA SIERA. The slider has been really, really good (22% SwStr%, 49% Strike%, .190 xwOBA). So he has that good pitch. The fastballs ehind it are a problem, so it’s another one of those situations. He’s only throwing the sinker 94mph this year and the four-seamer is the same. There won’t be consistency with Rocker, but the slider is good enough to result in some very good outings as we’ve seen.
Gerrit Cole had a huge 11:0 K:BB against his team, the Pirates, yesterday. He gave up two dingers. So this was kinda PRIME Cole. Lots of strikeouts, no walks, but a homer or two to make the line not all that great.
Cole’s K% is now up to 26% and the walk rate is below 5%. So I think I was wrong, it looks like he is an ace again. I kinda thought he’d just be “good” this year rather than great. But in July, he’s been great (34% K%, 2% BB%). The heater has a 13.2% SwStr% in July with a ridiculous 60% Strike%. And the slider is good.
Staying on the Yankees, Max Fried returned yesterday and he was impressive as ever.
5.0IP 1H 0ER 0R 7K 1BB
57 pitches to cruise through five. I guess there was a five-inning max there, because he threw fewer pitches to get those 15 outs than he did in his three-inning rehab outing. Carved ‘em up, and the Yankees won the game when the Pirates bullpen came in. They used Will Warren in the ninth inning, which was curious. Warren was supposed to start on Tuesday, but with the rainout they changed their plans to get Fried in there. Carlos Rodon is working his way back from injury, so I think they’ll still need to Warren back in the rotation before that happens. But once everybody is healthy, the Yankees have six starts to choose from:
Schlittler
Cole
Fried
Rodon
Weathers
Warren
Warren and Weathers are the competing guys. To me, it makes more sense to use Weathers in relief as a lefty with really good stuff. Seems like they could benefit from another lefty back there, and Weathers with the velo and the changeup could be a really effective reliever. But I guess you could say that about Warren too - he’s very good at getting righties out. We’ll see where they go, but I don’t think you need to roster Will Warren right now.
Logan Henderson threw 80 pitches and now has a 27% K-BB% in his big league time this year:
The four-seamer is ridiculously effective with a 59% Strike% and 28% Ball%. It’s a 93mph fastball thrown with very low extension, but it works. Somehow it works.
Henderson’s updated big league numbers: 64 IP, 2.54 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 32% K%, 6% BB%, 26% K-BB%.
Five pitchers from 2025-2026 have a K-BB% above 25% in 10+ GS
1. Misiorowski 28%
2. Skubal 28%
3. Wheeler 27%
4. Logan Henderson 26%
5. Hunter Greene 26%
Here's everybody above 23%:

He’s so much different than Mis/Skubal/Wheeler/Greene with the lack of size and lack of velo, so you wonder if that can possibly keep up. But he’s checked every box so far. He goes out there and puts up numbers seemingly every single time, and the underlying stuff has always looked good. Just a very skillful arm that maximizes his abilities.
Michael King was the DFS play last night that we should have used. He struck out seven on a very weak pitching slate.
6.0IP 5H 1ER 1R 7K 4BB
But I’ll continue to fade. Four walks brought his season BB% to 10%, and his K% is at just 21%.
The GB% is fine at 45%, and he’s given up just 11 homers in 21 starts, so he usually doesn’t wreck your ERA. The WHIP is 1.17 - which is pretty good. But a .252 BABIP has helped that. He does limit hard contact well (34% hard%) and the xBA against is just .245. So maybe he can hold it around a 1.20 WHIP. But you’re usually not getting good WHIPs from dudes with a K-BB% under 12%.
I suppose you hold and start him in 12-teamers or deeper, the home park is very good, but just nothing about the guy looks that impressive to me.
Chase Burns pitched on Tuesday and had six strikeouts in five scoreless innings. But the big K game hasn’t shown up since June rolled over to July. He has 12 strikeouts in his last 16 innings; not very Burns-like.
The Reds are the lone team in the NL Central with a losing record, so it doesn’t look like they have much playoff chance.
I was generous saying “much chance”, they have statistically no chance now. But crazy things happen. I mean the Red Sox just won 14 in a row.
Point being - Burns is probably going to be shut down a little bit early, or at least the innings will be limited. They just gave him the big extension and he’s still very early on in his career. He’s approaching his career high in innings already, so I wouldn’t be thinking Burns is an SP1 for the rest of the season. But still probably very good and not someone you need to consider benching or dropping or anything like that, obviously.
Landen Roupp is on a good roll again. He’s faced the Blue Jays, Mariners, and Wittless Royals the last three starts - so that helps - but he’s passed the tests.
He’s kind of a one-pitch guy. The curveball is great, and he struggled with the other stuff. At least the sinker keeps balls on the ground (54% GB%), but he really only has one strike-pitch. So that’ll hold him down, but he can go out there and beat the bad teams, especially at home.
Pitchers with negative fantasy points these last two days:
Framber Valdez: 0.2 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 1 SO, 2 BB
I saw someone say he threw a “YES hitter”, which was funny. The Tigers look like total schmucks for giving him that contract. Things aren’t looking good for Detroit the next few years. I suppose Troy Melton and Casey Mize have developed a bit this year and could form a non-awful 1-2-3 with Framber next year if he can bounce back. But it’s not a team I’d be feeling very good about once Skubal leaves.
Eduardo Rivera: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 SO, 2 BB
Kevin Gausman: 3.1 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 SO, 2 BB
Noah Schultz: 3.2 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 2 SO, 0 BB
Carson Palmquist: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 SO, 1 BB
Bailey Ober: 4.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 2 SO, 1 BB
We knew that Ober and Schultz are bad. But Gausman’s season has been rough. His last five starts: 6.08 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, 22% K%, 11% BB%
Gausman is now in the trade winds. I’ve said it a lot, but I’ll say it again - Gausman is always a good buy-low target when he’s going through these rough stretches.
This is probably the worst stretch of the last few seasons, but he’s always thrown in bad starts along the way but also tends to dominate in the second half. I don’t know, maybe it’s about over for the big veteran, but I’d certainly be adding Gausman anywhere he gets dropped.
Well I was going to write a lot more but now work is calling me over and over again and I have a meeting! So that sucks! Hopefully better stuff tomorrow and next week from cha boy here.
