The Rays demoted Taj Bradley after he got beat up by the White Sox. They did that right after the game, which was kind of weird. It was like they were in a fit of rage after losing to the White Sox. It was a real-life rage drop.
But look man it wasn’t Taj’s fault. He took on the league’s best offense last night. Well, okay, the league’s best offense in the second half as measured by runs scored.

Quinn Priester kept it moving, man. He’s been fantastic.
7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 SO, 2 BB, 16.7% SwStr%, 41.7% Ball%
A high ball rate las night, but everything else was great. He has a freaking 2.47 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP on a 21.1% K-BB% in his last 51 innings.
Let’s look at the pitch mitch again dating back to June 1st.
The slider and cutter have been great, and the sinker gets the ball on the ground at a great rate. I can’t fully understand it, but it’s working, and he is a must-own pitcher right now. What a crazy story.
I guess we should hat tip the Brewers. They seem to really know what they’re doing. They continually win games despite not having overly impressive rosters. Maybe I should get a Brewers hat. I do like that one logo they have.
It’s a tough ask to get myself to actually root for them, though. I grew up a Pirates fan, as you know, and the Brewers were probably the most hated team by us Pirates fans back then. The Pirates simply could not win a game in Miller Park.
But I’m a long way removed from that, now. I have almost forgotten about JJ Hardy, Rickie Weeks, and Ryan Braun.
The Troy Melton debut didn’t go well.
5 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 7 SO, 2 BB, 2 HR
The pitch mix data:
You know that I like the 15.6% SwStr% and the 33% Ball% and the 47% GB%. And the fastball velo! And the whiffs on the slider! If he didn’t give up the two homers I’d be jumping out of my shorts right now.
But he did give up the two homers, and he’s given up a 1.52 HR/9 in his 41.1 innings in pro ball this year.
It’s striking that he threw 19 sinkers and 10 curveballs when he has such a good four-seamer and slider (or at least it seems like he does). If you have a 96-99mph fastball, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t throw it at least like 40% of the time.
If he stays in the rotation, he’ll get the D’Backs and Twins next. I also have no idea if he’ll stay in the rotation.
Nick Lodolo with the CGSO!
9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 8 SO, 0 BB, 13.3% SwStr%, 27.6% Ball%
Great start for him. It was a good matchup with the Nats, but you don’t see a lot of complete game shutties like that againts anybody. His season now:
21 GS, 123 IP, 3.08 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 22.4% K%, 4.6% BB%, 1.2 HR/9
I had no idea he was doing this well. A 1.04 WHIP! An 18% K-BB%! And he’s been fully healthy. And the trend is great:
He posted a 3.24 JA ERA witha n 18% K-BB% in June and now he’s at a 2.46 JA ERA with a 24% K-BB% in July. Very solid pitcher. Shout out to him.
Let’s keep the tabs on Sean Manaea. He worked up to five innings and 82 pitches yesterday and was good once again.
Sick stuff. Everything checks out. Must-own, must-start guy, somehow.
And I won’t lie, I hate this guy. He’s one of these guys that has always been terrible, but has these 3-4 week spans from time to time where he dominates and gets everybody thinking that he’s suddenly great.
But maybe that’s true this time, I don’t know. I’m not going to hold his past transgressions from before 2024 against him at this point.
His Major League stats since last year:
34 GS, 194 IP, 3.39 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 25.6% K%, 8.5% BB%, 1.07 HR/9
It’s wild that he’s throwing a four-seamer 70% of the time this year and having so much success with it, given that it’s a 92mph pitch. I mentioned last time the unique release point, and that’s the whole key for him, I think. The ball comes at hitters from a place they almost never see it from, and that majorly helps.
Is he an SP1 for fantasy purposes the rest of the year? I think not! But how can you not start him in any matchup right now? And what more is there to say other than that?
Two guys we have been watching for the second half pitched last night.
Brandon Walter:
82 PC, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 5 SO, 1 BB, 40.2% Strike%, 35.4% Ball%
That’s a really poor Strike% and he got just 8 whiffs. So it wasn’t a dominant start under the hood, but seven more innings of one-run ball. He now has a 24.5% K% and a 1.9% BB% in his 53.2 MLB innings. He’s walked just four hitters. That’s marvelous. Can he stay as a mid-20s K% guy? I don’t think so! But if he’s really going for a 2-3% BB%, then he only needs a 22-23% K% to stay around a 20% K%. The JA ERA on Walter is sparkling at 2.66. He is one of these guys with a huge difference between his FIP and xFIP:
I went over the difference between those two in this post.
What this tells you about Walter is that he’s given up a very high HR/FB. You can know that right away without even looking. xFIP adjusts for HR/FB, and FIP doesn’t. So if you see a higher xFIP than FIP, you know the pitcher has been lucky on fly balls, and vice-versa.
So far, Walter has given up a 24% HR/FB, very high. Maybe it will stay high as a lefty who pitches in Houston. He allows a lot of pulled fly balls to righties, and Minutemaid Park (or whatever the dumb name is now) is not a good place to do that. But all things considered, Walter looks like a roster-worthy SP as I’ve said many times!
Slade Cecconi:
85 PC, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 SO, 2 BB
Quality start! But a bad one. He now has just four strikeouts in his last two starts (14.1 innings). Remember that he sailed through eight innings last time against the Athletics and then fell apart in the 9th to ruin his line. So it’s basically two starts of generating weak contact, limiting hits and runs, but not getting strikeouts. He had a 24% K% coming into these last two, and now it’s down to 21%.
I don’t think the breakout is happening for Cecconi. But he’s a streamable guy and he gets the Rockies at home next. After that, he’ll take on the Twins in Minnesota, which is a decent matchup and it might even be … more decenter … by then since the trade deadline will have passed.
One more thing on that K-BB%. I talked about this last year at some point, so I’ve already proven the point and I’m not going to go over it all again. But what I was wondering back then is which 15% K-BB% is better:
A) 25% K%, 10% BB%
B) 20% K%, 5% BB%
Are all 15% K-BB%s the same? Or fill in the blank with whatever number you want.
And what you find is that the one with the higher K% is better.
This is because the one with the higher K% is allowing fewer balls in play.
A) 100% - 25% - 10% = 65%
B) 100% - 20% - 5% = 75%
So option A gives you a ball in play 65% of the time, while option B gives you a ball in play 75% of the time. And some portion of that extra 10% will be home runs, and home runs hurt your ERA a lot more than walks do. I did all the math and stuff in that past back then; you’ll just have to trust me here.
A 20% K-BB% is good no matter whatever, but you’d rather have the 30% K% and 10% BB% rather than a 22% K% and a 2% BB%. It’s not a massive difference, but it’s a difference.
The best upcoming schedules:
The worst:
And here we are, a Thursday with only five MLB games going. I’m going to give myself a day away from baseball. These are nice reset days for my brain just to focus on and do other things.
And I have found myself as the IT guy for the private Christian school my church runs. A lot has changed there, and a lot of people have quit, so they didn’t have anybody to take over the IT stuff so I kinda just volunteered to do it. And, of course, the guy who was doing it for the past several years wasn’t an IT professional so he didn’t do things super well, so we have a lot of work to do. And the guy who runs the school now doesn’t know anything at all about technology. And that sucks in some ways since I get no help, but it’s niec in some other ways because I can pretty much just run stuff however I want. But I have a lot to learn and figure out, and not all that much time to do it.
So I’ll be training myself to be the best Google Admin I can be, and I’m going to buy myself tacos for lunch as a reward for me being such a nice guy.
I would quite appreciate prayers for our school. It’s a bit of a tough time right now and we’d really, really like to see the school thrive. Christian education is really, really important in my eyes and I’d really love to see the school have success and a big impact on the community, and I’m happy to be able to help see that through. So if you’re a believer, say a prayer for us. It’s called Granger Christian School. We’re going to the Classical Christian Education model starting this year, which is exciting but also a big challenge.
Have a nice day.

Sending thoughts and prayers your way JA. I grew up in a Christian school and both of my parents worked there. My mom up until she retired a few years ago. It’s a struggle to keep everything together financially. All the best to you sir.
