Check out yesterday’s box scores here
It was a day off for us yesterday with just five games. But Chris Sale and Gavin Williams both struck out 11.
That’s THREE STRAIGHT 11-strikeout games from Williams to bring his K% above 30% for the year.
From what I can tell, there have only been five instances of streaks of 11+ strikeouts that lasted three games or more:
So this is really impressive stuff from Gavin.
If we open it up to 10+ strikeouts:
Lots more! That Ohtani run in 2022 is the longest we’ve seen. Six straight games of 10+ strikeouts. That was back when the Angels were abusing the guy. Full pitch counts, in the lineup every single day. That season was something else.
Gavin’s having a true breakout year. He’s an ace, and probably a top ten pick for next year.
Maybe his 3.78 ERA will be a hesitation point for some people, but it shouldn’t be.
Maybe he’ll get thumped a couple more times to bloat that ERA towards four, and then we could be in a Dylan Cease situation next year. But probably not. He’s really, really good. He’s jacked the K% up more than five points while lowering his walk rate to a career-low BY FAR. This 7.3% BB% is something nobody predicted. He’s got it all working besides that 1.4 HR/9.
Not great here. Four walks and five hits in five innings. That’s eight walks in his last two starts. His season numbers:
Pretty good but not quite ace-level with his 15.3% K-BB%. It took him two starts to get going, he struck out just four in his first two. If we forgive those:
Impressive season from Melton who might end up being the Tigers ace next year.
Two good ones in a row now from Bieber after a rough start to his return.
The 9:2 K:BB in the last two still isn’t fantastic, but he hasn’t given up much in terms of hits or runs. The pitch mix numbers from the last two:
Getting strikes with the fastball, just not whiffs. The changeup and curve are working, and he has teh cutter/slider/sinker to mix it up. I don’t think Bieber is going to be a strikeout guy, but he has some good command and a lot of different ways to attack.
He goes at righties and lefties much differently, which is a good thing to do when you don’t have great raw stuff.
Maybe he can be a viable 12-team guy, but I have my doubts on the Biebs. The Blue Jays are in last place and Bieber hasn’t been able to stay healthy, so there’s not a big reason for them to push him. But they have to get through the rest of the season and he’s just getting going so we’re not talking about a potential shutdown situation.
Where have the strikeouts gone? Bradley was one of those guys early this year getting K’s without whiffs, so we’re seeing that regression happen.
Still a solid 17% K-BB% and .307 xwOBA allowed. The fly balls haven’t turned into a ton of homers, but that’s always a risk with him and the way the Twins seem to like to pitch.
But a good season for Bradley no doubt. He’s established himself as a big league starter in Minnesota, and that wasn’t super clear before this year.
Chandler Simpson went awhile without a steal between May and June, but he has seven this month to make up that, and he’s hitting .381.
So it’s a .288 average with 26 steals.
That puts him for fourth in steals:
Nunez 37
Witt Jr. 30
Chisholm 27
Simpson 26
PCA 25
Tatis 25
Ramirez 24
Caballero 23
Esteury Ruiz 22
Oneil Cruz / Josh Naylor 21
And 16th in AVG (350 PA min). Somewhat useful of a fantasy player, I guess, but he’s probably not doing enough with SB/AVG to make up for his goose egg in homers and 19 RBI. He and Steven Kwan are the only players above 350 PA and under 20 RBI.
Speaking of Kwan, though, he’s back to doing normal Kwan things.
A 1.079 OPS in July without a single homer. That’s not something you see. But he’s doing something incredibly right. For the season, he now has 51 walks and 37 strikeouts with 80 hits.
He has a .451 BABIP this month on 51 balls in play. Just a weird and wild month for Kwan, but he’s giving you what you thought he could now - batting average and some steals, and he was one of the worst hitters in all regards for the first four months of the season.
There aren’t too many shockers on here. But this Heriberto Hernandez guy has been excellent for the fish:
Strong .790 OPS for the year on a 25% K% and a 13.3% Brl% with a .361 xwOBA. He’s sneaky good with those 13 bombs and .474 SLG.
The EVs aren’t eye-popping, but there’s enough there:
And he hits righties and lefties well:
Really pounds lefties, but he’s serviceable against righties. So there’s a low-owned power stick if you’re looking for some help.
Nick Gonzales has been hitting for batting average all year, and he’s doing his best work right now.
Five homers in June-July. That’s around a 15-20 homer pace, which isn’t something Nicky G is going to do, but he’s at least showing that he can hit a couple homers a month after he failed to do that until late May.
And his performance has him hitting near the top of the lineup most days, so there are counting stats to like as well. I think Gonzales should be a lot more owned, and honestly he’s a pretty valuable dynasty asset right now at 27, clearly entering into a full-time role at 2B/3B for the Pirates in the future. He was the 7th overall pick in the 2020 draft, so the pedigree was there, it just took him awhile to develop, I guess.
The 2020-2021 drafts and minor league stuff was a couple of wrenches in the works. Those two years were so strange in pretty all facets of life. But we won’t get into it.
Nobody played college ball or minor league ball in 2020, so guys missed valuable development years and then teams in the 2021 draft didn’t have much to use.
Here’s the 2020 draft. I will put in bold the guys who have actually turned into useful MLB players.

Bobby Miller (LAD), RHP, University of Louisville
Not a bad rate of getting to the Majors, but there’s one superstar here and that’s Pete Crow-Armstrong. Crochet could be considered too but he hasn’t thrown many MLB innings and this season looks like a lost cause.
It’s still really hard to know the future when you’re drafting baseball players.
Ozzie Albies hits his 16th. He’s having another nice season after a major dud in 2025.
Matching his HR total in 52 fewer games so far and the OPS is up to a decent mark of .747. The steals aren’t a thing anymore. A career-low 5% SB Attempt%.
Let’s look at the highest stolen base attempt rates since June 1st:
Jazz Chisholm is running wild. Remember when he said (off the cuff, admittedly) that he wanted to go 50/50 this year? He might get to 40 steals at this rate, and he has 16 homers now with a recent surge. So maybe he can do 25-40, which is still awesome. But the .225 AVG has been a killer for the fantasy value and he’s had some brutal slumps.
Jackson Merrill has six homers and two steals this month.
He’s been better. You’ll certainly take this .841 OPS in July. Maybe he’s figured something out, I don’t know. But that rookie year was a total fakeout.
Not much to get excited about. But at least Trevor Larnach is back to hitting righties well and doing some damage. He’s been very good since June:
And I’ve been late to talk about Ty France. He does this every once in awhile, jsut goes on a run of collecting hits. He’s on the Padres now, if you didn’t know. They’ve tried a lot of things at first base over the years.
Big .994 OPS with six bombs from France this month. But he’s not good, right?
His home run rate has truly exploded this year up to 6.2%!
A 12.5% Brl% and he’s hitting his fly balls HARD.
I suppose that’s a deep league add there!
We have a loaded up Friday slate after the dead Thursday, so let’s turn the page to that! Have a good one!
