I powerwashed and updated like 60 Chromebooks yesterday for the school. To “powerwash” a Chromebook does not mean to blast it with water at 600mph, it just means to factory reset it. But the google nerds think they’re real cool so they call it powerwashing.
Before I typed that paragraph I googled how hard water comes out of a powerwasher so I could say a reasonable number, and the answer I got was just “very”.
It’s more proper to measure it in pressure rather than miles per hour, I guess. But it’s not like you can’t measure it in miles per hour or whatever other measurement of speed you want.
Once you a factory reset a device, it forgets all of its settings. So to get the updates done I had to connect them all back to the internet. That meant typing this insane password (93#239gV#2gG96fe# or something like that) into each Chromebook. So that was something. But look, I was born for this.
My first ever claim to fame in life was being the greatest typist in a small Christian school in Plum Borough, Pennsylvania. They called me the Mavis Beacon Deacon. They called me Jonathan “QWERTY KING” Anderson. I am amazing at typing.
And all of you who read that sentence and then said in your head “then why do you make so many typos?” can cram it, man. I don’t need that. Proofreading is for softies.
Not only was I the unofficial greatest typist in Pittsburgh East Christian School (long deceased) history, I believe I also held the record for fastest mile time for elementary and middle school. So that was my second great accomplishment in life. However, it was totally fake. I missed the normal day for the mile run, and it was raining on the day I was going to make it up. So I ran it around the basketball court, and the gym teacher completely mismeasured it, clearly. I ran like a 5:40 mile or something as a 12 year old. I knew that was total crap but the gym teacher didn’t hesitate for a second. He was just like “wow man nice” and put me on the list.
For all of the downsides in my personality, the one thing I have a good amount of is self-awareness. And I knew I could run nowhere near a 6 minute mile. I mean we ran that thing every year and I was always at like 7:30. Even at 12, I wasn’t jaded enough to think someone could knock two minutes off their mile time without even trying to. But I took the record, and I still claim it to this day.
Not much happened in baseball yesterday, here’s the full SP data:
This Eric Lauer thing is simply out of hand. This is one of those situations where the new guy in your league who knows nothing about baseball analytics picked him up after a couple of good starts and got real cocky thinking he had something. And then all of the seasoned fantasy baseballers in the league are just like man, he has no idea what’s coming. But sometimes it never comes. And Lauer now has a 2.61 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, and a 20.4% K-BB% in 69 innings. It’s remarkable.
I guess we could say that everything I write about here is remarkable. Since I’m remarking on it. It’s kind of a dumb word. What in life is not able to be remarked about?
It’s astounding! Stupefying!
I don’t think I’ve done the Beautiful Mind video this year in the Daily Notes. So here that is:
That’s one of the seven movies I have seen and enjoyed in my life. And I think of that line from the movie all the time. I am terrified, mortified, petrified, stupefied by Eric Lauer and his 2.74 JA ERA. But look at those luck numbers, look at them. I’m going to make them real freaking big so you can look at them?
That’s a lot of good luck. I bet this guy is way up there on the luck scores list.
Yeahhhhh bro. Sixth-luckiest pitcher in the league.
There are a couple of common threads running through those names, can you catch any of them? I see two things right away
→ Splitters
→ Lefties
And I do admit that these aren’t perfect representations of luck. There are plenty of things a pitcher can do to generate lower HR/FB and BABIP. So it’s not perfect, but it’s very very fair to expect all of those guys to regress toward the league average in those stats.
But what can I say? Am I really going to sit here and tell people to not start Lauer and his 2.74 JA ERA and 1.58 WHIP+ after 10 starts of getting the job done? I’m not.
Sonny Gray has had a stretch of starts for the ages, man. This has been WEIRD. Look at it since June 27th:
That’s a 38:2 K:BB in 31.2 innings, and yet a 5.97 ERA. Unreal. And the home run rate isn’t even out of control with just four allowed in 31.2 innings.
It’s really insane stuff. Gray has a 2.08 JA ERA and a 1.93 WHIP+ over these last 32 starts. He’s been elite under the hood, but everything else has worked against him. He’s given up a .364 BABIP and a 31% RISP H%. Those are both outliers. His 16% HR/FB is normal. He’s giving up hits at the worst possible times. His hard hit rate is only 38%, his xBA is only .269, and his xwOBA allowed is only .306. So you can’t even say he’s just getting smoked. Just one of the wildest runs of bad luck you’ll ever see. That makes him a great buy-low.
Steven Kwan hit his 7th and 8th homers of the year last night. That was surprising. He hadn’t homered since June 13th and he had just two homers in all of May-July prior. The guy has pretty much been terrible for fantasy purposes this year.
He now has a .287 average with eight homers and 11 steals. Similar production to Jordan Beck and Geraldo Perdomo. When you’re hitting so few homers and not stealing bases at an elite level, there’s just such pressure to hit for a super super high batting average. And Kwan has done that at times, but batting average is not a reliable stat, especially not for a guy who doesn’t hit the ball hard.
Kwan has only hit over .300 once in his career. He’ll never give you a bad batting average, but there’s so much left to be desired. And with the Guardians struggling offensively, his runs total is suffering. He has 47, which puts him on pace for 75 or so, but that’s just another mediocre number. The guy is a bad fantasy player, but he was good last night!
It does give me the chance to show you this new thing I added to the Hitter Profile tab the other day. Many of you have seen by now, I’m sure. It’s a 15-Day Rolling Average of xwOBA OE!
So that looks at xwOBA OE over the last 15 days, it does that every day, plots the dots, and then draws a line through them. And you can see the overall trend with the red dotted line.
What you’re looking for here is to be above zero. The league’s best hitter in this regard is Aaron Judge, and he’s almost never anywhere near zero:
Here’s a full list of hitters in the second half with
→ 25+ PA
→ xwOBA OE above zero
→ Owned in less than 20% of Yahoo leagues
Do with that what you will. The people are asking me about Brice Matthews. He’s hit three dingers in this first week of the 2H. But he’s whiffing an absolute ton (56% Contact%), so the slumps are going to come hard and heavy. But he has real power, so he’ll have some of these spike games. But overall,l I wouldn’t want him on a fantasy team right now.
That’s it for today, we’re back at it with a full slate of baseball on this Friday night! Thanks for reading.
