Fun night for me last night! The cash lineup came through with ease.
I was shocked by the low Logan Webb ownership, and I thought Dustin May would be higher as well. Webb did not work, but May pitched very well against the Reds.
The chalk pitcher was MacKenzie Gore, which surprised me. It made sense at home against the Mariners, but man that guy just always finds a way to let you down.
Kinda lucky that my lineup had 20 points from four steals, but it was a good effort and an easy win.
I got to go on Run Pure Sports’ nightly DFS breakdown live stream last night with Steve Boynton and DraftCheat last night, and that was a blast. I’d share the link, but why would anybody want to watch a slate breakdown for a slate that is already finished? DFS is the best and I remain very excited for the rest of this MLB season and the NFL season turning $2 into $4 in the $2 double up contest.
It was a low scoring night! Just 7.6 runs per game.
And only 27 homers hit. For comparison, 36 were hit last Friday and 43 were hit the Friday before that.
So let’s look at some of the big happenings.
Tarik Skubal will forever be grateful for the microneedle.

Unless he’s not a very thoughtful, reflective person. But he came back in record time from his injury thanks to that new procedure and now after shaking off a little bit of rust, he’s the best pitcher in the league again as he heads into unrestricted free agency. Since June 19th:
Pretty, pretty good. Skubal’s #2 in the league (qualified SPs) in K-BB%.
A truly special talent. I don’t want to get crazy, but Skubal might be the most dominant left-handed starter of all time. That probably is crazy, there have been a lot of pitchers in the history of baseball. But I doubt there have been ten left-handed pitchers in human history that are as good as Skubal.
And without that microneedle procedure, who knows? He probably would have gotten back to this eventually, but it would have taken a lot longer and I would guess the smaller sample coming back from the injury would have made teams a little more hesitant about shelling out a few hundred million for him this winter.
The fastball velo came back down to earth after that 100.1mph average last time. It was 98.6 last night, equal to the human body temperature.
Although I think that 98.6 mark is outdated. That was one of those numbers that got drilled into your head in grade school. We’ve got 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, 9.8 meters per second squared (the rate at which objects fall), 5,280 feet (in a mile), and 105.3 (the perfect QB rating). Those are the big four numbers in modern day American education.
But look we’re down to like 97.6! We’re getting colder! Or are we? Maybe they just changed the way it’s measured? Here’s the alleged explanation of that:
I’m always slightly triggered when parents take their kids temperatures. I don’t get bothered by much in life, but that’s one I don’t like. Your body temperature fluctuates; the way you measure it can change things (what if your kid’s mouth isn’t fully closed, what if they just drank something hot…), and the $7 thermometer you bought at CVS isn’t exactly Hawkeye-level tech.
You’ve gotta measure things multiple times! Don’t trust single data points!
But Sasaki had 24 whiffs and a 33% Ball%. He was really efficient and the splitter was at its best:
A 60% Strike% on a splitter is wiiiild. The fastball wasn’t as impressive, but this is the kind of upside Sasaki has when he’s throwing the ball where he wants it. It could go horribly next time out, but I do like the Dodgers’ chances of developing Sasaki into a good starter eventually. And they’re still paying him basically nothing ($800K this year) after signing him to a minor league deal since he wasn’t old enough to be eligible for the big league contract when he signed. Or it was something like that, I probably don’t have the contractual lingo exactly right.
Good stuff for him against the Braves. Rogers has been CRUISING since June 4th:
A 1.80 ERA in his last nine starts? I knew he was doing well, but I didn’t know it was like this! Still a pedestrian 14.4% K-BB%, but he has gotten back his elite home run suppression ways and the strikeouts have been mostly fine. The Braves can be had by left-handed pitchers, and Rogers is crafty and healthy right now.
A 9:1 K:BB for Yesavage, you like to see that. Any time he’s not out there walking the world, he’ll do pretty well. He still needs a sinker or a changeup or something:
The fastball seems fine, but it’s far from an elite heater and that puts a lot of pressure on him having that splitter. Classic problem, but I think the Blue Jays can develop him well and turn him into a very good big league starter. We’ve seen their chops developing that Cease changeup.
He’s been really good outisde of one start over the last seven:
Just four innings in this one, though. 93 pitches to get those 12 outs. Not perfect, but a good sign that he was throwing strikes when it counted.
71 pitches! The Rays are still being careful, and McClanahan’s K% is down to 22.2% now. Certainly not an ace, and it’s tough to get quality starts from anybody on Tampa Bay. I thought they might start loosening the reins a bit as they head toward the postseason, but it didn’t happen.
Good pitcher, not an elite pitcher, and you’re probably looking at five innings most of the time.
Another really impressive start for Jones. He cruised into the sixth inning and gave up one run on a PCA homer. Only seven whiffs, but he was in the zone again (34% Ball%) and that stuff he has is very hard to hit. And it was 83 pitches! So he’s getting there. I think Jones could be an ace-type pitcher next year.
It seems like the Cy Young is his to lose now. A 12:0 K:BB, and his ERA is down to 2.07 with a 0.93 WHIP in his 130.1 innings.
Stud pitcher, and he could keep getting better. I guess you can’t get much better than a 2.07 ERA, but he’s building up the pitch mix this year after being very, very heavy on the four-seamers last year.
The cutter is awesome. I guess you’d like to see a slider or changeup thrown more often, but if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it. Some dudes can just go out there and crush with fastball variations, and that’s what we’ve seen this year from Schlittler.
My DFS hero from last night! Eight strikeouts against the Reds. His K% is up to 23.3% now, the best mark of his career.
The ERA is still bloated by a few disastrous outings, but he’s a good arm.
His SIERA is 3.92, way better than what we’ve seen the last three season prior:
Good job by the Cardinals there with that free agent signing.
He threw harder in this one (+1.2mph), but just one strikeout and three walks. The guy just isn’t really a big leaguer, I guess? And I say that after an easy quality start with three hits and two runs allowed.
I thought he’d be a high strikeout pitcher in the bigs with a big home run problem. Instead he’s just kinda bad at everything.
He’s awful. This was astoundingly his sixth-straight start over a .350 xwOBA allowed. He’s getting hit so hard every time out.
He might be the most stack-against-worthy pitcher in the league outside of what you get from the Rockies. Not a good job by the Angels; many such cases.
The power of name value! Everybody has wanted to think that Grayson can be really good if he just stays healthy, but it’s been over for awhile now. He has a career 4.73 ERA and 4.03 SIERA now. And the injuries have taken away what ceiling he had as a young man. Kinda sad, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. Not everybody can be good. If everybody’s good, nobody’s good!

Uh-oh! He has not been impressive in his last few outings.
He’s had to tone down the fastball velo a bit after he debuted throwing in the high-90s.
The whiffs did not come last night:
55% FB%, two homers, 43% Strike%, 5.6% SwStr%. That’s ugly stuff. He didn’t have the splitter, and that left him kinda naked out there away from Seattle where he’s pitched so well.
It will be very interesting to watch what the M’s do with pitching this deadline. They have plenty of horses in the rotation, but they have to be looking at Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan as future pieces they want to get into the rotation next year (or even this year depending on what happens). They’re floating out Hancock and Castillo in trades, and now they’re dealing with some struggles from Miller.
He had us in that first half I’m not gonna lie!
Which version of Martin is real? The bad pitcher we saw from 2022-2025 and from June 2026-present? Or the guy we saw for 2.5 months earlier this year? Probably the former, right?

It’s the same question I just posed with Martin! Who is the real Murakami? The hopers want to believe it’s the version we saw pre-injury. But how can you say that? He had a 58% Contact% before the injury, but that was all forgiven because he hit a bunch of homers. Well, now he’s not hitting the homers anymore and his contact rate is down to 49%.
It’s just not possible to be really good with a mid-30s K%. It’s not. It can happen for a couple of weeks, but it’s not a sustainable approach. So the Murakami faders (hand raised) are looking a little bit better right now.
I’d forgive the small sample if he wasn’t striking out more than a third of the time even while he was doing well. The true Murakami is somewhere in the middle of pre- and post-injury, but this is a really tough game to play.
When you strike out 34% of the time and walk 17% of the time, you have literally less than half of your PAs to do actual damage. So you take 650 PAs adn turn that into 350 PAs where you actually have a chance to get a hit. If you’re going to hit 35 homers in a season like that, you have to hit one every 10 PAs. And nobody can do that. When Barry Bonds hit 73 bombs, he hit one homer every 6.7 non-walk PAs. And obviously that was a season probably nobody will ever do again or even come close to. Maybe he can hit one every 15 PAs? But that would be like a 25-homer season if he continues to give away half of his PAs to walks and strikeouts.
Maybe he’ll transform. Probably he will. But there are major flaws and questions in his game and I don’t think I’ll be touching the guy next year at this rate.
Another bomb for CES. He has three in 22 trips to the plate. And his K% is 18%.
His contact rate is 80%:
That’s a good early sign, I suppose, but it’s like four games worth of playing, so we can’t make any real judgements on him. I went ahead and added him this morning because I could use a 1B/3B option, and that’s where he’s eligible - which is very nice. But I’m not holding my breath. At the very least, the Orioles will ride out the hot streak and we’ll get more data on him in a hurry.
In the minors, he hit six homers in May, six in June, and now he has six (including MLB) in July. So that’s a lot of homers!

Still nothing great, but the 22% K% with good EVs and bat speed show that he does have plenty of upside. I’d be buying long-term, there’s a reason he was the #2 overall pick. The raw physical talent is there.

That will give you some idea of the guys getting jobbed the last handful of starts.
