Nick Kurtz had the second-best hitter game of the last five years if you measure it by fantasy points scored using the DraftKings system. He went 6/6 with four homers and a double (which was almost a homer).

I’m sure that’s not news to you. It’s amazing how good Kurtz has been since he figured it out after a few tough weeks to start his career.

I like to forgive the first 100 career PAs. So, let’s do that. He had about 100 PAs before hitting the IL. Since his return from the IL:

.345/.414/.841, 1.255 OPS, 29.6% K%, 10.5% BB%, 18 HR

Only Eugenio Suarez has more homers since June 1st. And nobody with 150 PA has a higher OPS.

Which first basemen get drafted ahead of him next year? Anybody?

Freddy Peralta was probably the best pitcher of the day, but that game was at 4 pm on a Friday, so nobody even noticed. I would like the federal government to ban all Friday games before 6 pm Eastern time.

It’s been another strong year for Peralta.

It’s his best ERA by far, which is interesting since the K% is down a bit.

Under the hood, he looks more like “a good pitcher” rather than one of the game’s best:

He’s limiting hard contact big-time, which is great, but the .252 BABIP and 13% RISP H% are pretty lucky.

We are probably past the point in the fantasy season where you can really “sell high” on guys, but he would qualify as that.

I think Zebby Matthews is going to finish the year extremely well. He now sits with a 2.49 JA ERA on a 23.4% K-BB%, a 14.8% SwStr%, and a 33.7% Ball%.

The fastball has been great (59% Strike%), and his slider is nasty (22% SwStr%). He does not have the 3-5% BB% we saw from his last year, but it’s a perfectly fine trade-off to go to 7% if the K% is going to be that high.

He’s still not getting many ground balls, but it’s not completely disastrous this year at a 39% GB%. He’ll give up some dingers, but he looks like a guy who will reliably deliver strong K-BB stuff, and that’s the most important thing.

Mike Burrows delivered six shutout innings against the Diamondbacks. He has done a lot of good things in the Pirates’ rotation this year. The K-BB% is decent at 15%, he gets a ton of whiffs with the changeup, and he has a nice four-pitch mix.

The key will be improving the fastball a bit. It’s been bad (46% Strike%) at earning strikes and has been hit hard.

But the velo is there, so with some improvements in command or “shape” or whatever, this guy could be pretty solid.
