Big trade went down late last night with the Red Sox trading Connelly Early to the Nationals for Curtis Mead.
So it’s a solid and exciting young pitching prospect in Early (24) for a 25-year-old breakout bat. I definitely thought Mead was older than 25, so that makes the trade make a little more sense to me.
Both teams are in the playoff mix, and they’re dealing from strength. The Red Sox have a good number of solid starting pitchers, although that rotation has been hurt quite a bit with the loss of Garrett Crochet. But they are getting Ranger Suarez back and they feel pretty good about Payton Tolle, so they were comfortable enough to trade a guy.
Mead’s hitting .254/.352/.500 this year with 17 homers. He’s been very good. 19% K%, 12% BB%. He doesn’t hit the ball super hard but there’s enough there. He has an 11% Brl% and a .356 xwOBA.
The reaction to the Mead side is that it’s risky to give up something valuable for a guy who hasn’t done much of anything in the Majors before the last three months.
What if this year is just a fluke? The Red Sox just gave up a very solid mid-rotation arm at the beginning of his career.
Early is hurt. He had left elbow inflammation, so maybe that was part of this. Maybe the Red Sox are being very, very focused on this year and thinking that Early isn’t helping them at the current moment in their playoff push, so he was expendable. Maybe the elbow thing is worse than the Red Sox are letting on! But I’d assume he’d be healthy soon, and he’ll be the Nationals' #1 or #2 pitcher when he arrives. He and Cavalli make for a decent 1-2 punch that could make the Nationals competitive if their offense keeps doing what its doing without Mead.
So I’m on the Nationals side of this one long term. Early seems definitely good to me, while Mead could be a total fakeout. For now, the Red Sox definitely did need an infielder. They’ve had to heavily rely on Seigler and Monasterio in the middle infielder, and that’s not something they wanted to do.
The Kristian Campbell bust kinda ruined their plans for a couple years ago. He has a .690 OPS in AAA this year while making $2 million after getting that uncalled-for extension before last season.
Brown had a big bounce-back starter after his rough patch of not throwing strikes. 20 whiffs!
Who you got in the AL Cy Young race? Cease threw it right back at Schlittler after Schlittler’s big Friday start.
The 17 more innings for Schlittler with the lower ERA probably leans it toward him. Cease has ten more strikeouts in 17 fewer innings and has one of the best K% of all time right now, but the two of these guys are neck and neck and every start will matter.
He had struck out seven in his previous three starts and then popped up for eight against the Reds in this one. Super weird pitcher, but an under-control 3.85 ERA this year.
Not a fantasy guy, obviously.
Just got squared up I guess. No homers, only two walks, but three strikeouts and eight hits.
I am starting to worry a little bit about the fastball. Just a 7.4% SwStr% on it so far. We were thinking 12%+ on the elite heater, but it’s not been that way so far.
The slider has been ridiculous, and he has 2 of 4 starts being very good.
But it’s tough to come back from injury and the fastball command (or something) must not be here yet.
Two home losses in a big series to the Cubs and Pirates fans are in shambles again. They didn’t score a run last night, so it didn’t matter much what Skenes did. But Paul didn’t help the cause giving up five earned runs. There was very weak contact, though. it was a .207 xBA and a .307 xwOBA yesterday. And you see the 11 strikeouts. He had a 21% SwStr% in this one. In July, he has a 2.53 JA SIERA with a 30% K%, 7% BB%, and two homers given up. Looks like an ace, still, just some very unfortunate outings for him that keep repeating.
Good result here for Eovaldi. He’d given up ten ER in the previous three, and the 3+ ER start has been common lately. But a bounce-back against Seattle with an 8:1 K:BB in seven strong innings for him.
His K-BB% is once again at 20%, but a 4.05 ERA is there with it. Here are your highest ERAs in the 20% K-BB% club:
Bad luck and homers will put you on this list. Two Pirates… very sad for me.
Pretty good for him, and you see that he’s had a very nice season in K% and BB%, but the results haven’t been all that good because of homers. Got it done last night though as he tries to stick in the rotation after Rodon returns.
Johnson was on a little bit of a roll there, but a triple-snowman (8H, 8R, 8ER) ended it. TRIPLE SNOWMAN YOU GET IT?
The guy has some stuff, I guess. The cutter has been good and he has a splitter. But that sinker is hilariously bad.
I made this new MLB DW PITCH GRADES table on the dashboard a couple days ago. Sometimes new tabs just APPEAR there, I’m always tinkering with that. It’s the world’s greatest MLB Tableau Dashboard, #provemewrong.
So he has the worst sinker in the game. Cool table if you’re just curious to quickly find who has the best fill in the blank pitch type. Here’s Misiorowski, our 2026 standard bearer:
Of course we can’t really hold everybody to the standard of a guy who has a body more alien-like than human-like. I guess that’s not right to say because aliens aren’t real. I’m in the camp that aliens are just demons. And Misiorowski is not a demon; he is an image bearer of Yahweh, and I hope he and everybody else find everlasting life through faith in Christ. Happy Sunday!
Another sometimes good Brewers lefty. Don’t be shocked if he’s the big 2027 breakout for them! They do this stuff all the time.
But his stuff really isn’t anything special, he’s just a crafty, funky lefty with good and bad results all over the place.
I feel like a guy named Gasser should throw harder than 93. Maybe him and Misiorowski can switch surnames.
Your 20+ point performances here:
Could PCA win MVP?
The +400 looks pretty decent to me. Ohtani is cold at the plate and not pitching. An IL stint is possible, isn’t it? And that would immediately tank that -600.
Petey C-A is on his way to a 30-30 season and the OPS is up to .934.
Plus the Gold Glove defense in centerfield and that’s an MVP resume with ease. Tough to do in the days of Ohtani, but I think he’s got a real shot.
Devers is good again. Huge .629 SLG in July, 16 bombs since June began. Patience has been rewarded.
Cooper Pratt has two bombs recently and an .897 OPS in July.
Not a ton to excited on for this year. Limited power, hitting low in the order, but he’s coming alive and can does have stolen bases. He’s a big dude too so we think he can develop power, we just haven’t seen it much even in the minors.
And that will do it for the daily notes today!
