Check out yesterday’s box scores here
Cristian Javier led the day in pitching points scored. He came into the game in a long relief role after Tatsuya Imai once again failed to escape the first inning (as chalk in DFS, by the way).
5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 7 SO
We’ve been through the Javier thing many times. He’s been really, really bad every chance he’s gotten, but he had it going last night. He hasn’t pitched much this year (40 innings total), but has a 7.17 ERA in 21.1 big league innings with a 21% K% and a 15% BB%. Obviously those numbers were ridiculously bad before five shutties last night. But why are we even spending time on Javier again? I had to mention it because he was probably the least likely slate points leader of the season. It was that kind of weird day in baseball yesterday. Maybe the Astros give him a spot start or two after this, though.
The reason for Javier’s performance was Imai:
0.67IP 1H 2ER 2R 1K 4BB
33 pitches, four walks, a 63.6% Ball%. 21 balls… that has to be the most in a single inning of the season, right? Actually NO, many people have thrown more.
It wasn’t even the most in the first inning. We at least knew this was possible. The matchup was good, but the matchup doesn’t matter with guys who sometimes lose all ability to throw the ball in the box. And that’s who Imai is. He has now four starts with a Ball% above 50%.
We take for granted the ability to throw strikes. And it’s understandable why we do. You would think anybody in the Major Leagues would have solved that problem by now. I don’t know what’s going on with the dude, but I wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole in fantasy leagues. I will, however, definitely play him in DFS nex time when he’s $6,200 or something. I don’t think we’ve seen the last 8+ strikeout game of the year from him.
Zack Wheeler - 3.0IP 6H 5ER 5R 6K 1BB
This wasn’t as bad as it seemed. He had 14 whiffs (20.6% SwStr%), so he was still fooling dudes. But the bad news:
2 homers
39.7% Ball%
-1.7mph on the fastball
You don’t love to see the loss of velo!
Those are the averages on the two fastballs. His max on the FF was way down as well:
Could be nothing! Maybe he was just tired or sick or something. Most of these things seem to be forgotten with the next start.
No reason to panic. You’ll give up homers sometimes, and he gave up two. There’s not a ton you can do about that.
Payton Tolle - 5.33IP 5H 2ER 2R 7K 1BB
The five point one! 90 pitches, 16 whiffs, 50% Strike%, 17.8% SwStr%, 7:1 K:BB. All good from Tolle exploiting this Athletics lineup that I don’t think is going to hit much against lefties even at home. Langeliers was a large loss for them overall, but especially against left-handed starters.
Tolle is great, and he has a clear runway to stay in the rotation now with Early out of the picture.
Kumar Rocker - 6.67IP 4H 2ER 2R 7K 2BB
Another good one from Rocker. Let’s see if it was slider city again:
It sure was. He did exactly the same thing as he’s been doing all year. Which is expected, I guess, but funny to me nonetheless. His fastball, sinker, cutter all got punished - look at those xwOBAs! But the slider is the great equalizer, I guess. 28.6% SwStr%, .126 xwOBA on it last night. A 55% Strike% on a slider is so ridiculously good.
This is a Max Meyer situation, except that Meyer has two good breaking balls and not quite this bad of a fastball situation. Rocker is going to be bombed one of these times coming up. He’s a truly unique pitcher. I’ve rarely seen a guy with one pitch that is this good and all the other pitches being this bad.
On the other side of Rocker in that weird Monday afternoon game was George Kirby giving up seven runs on four homers.
4.0IP 7H 7ER 7R 3K 0BB
He hasn’t had a big issue with homers this year. He’s up to just a 1.1 HR/9 even after the foursome there. On the raod he has 1.2 HR/9 now and 1.07 at home. The road ERA is up to 4.10.
You drafted Kirby for WHIP, didn’t you? He’s always a posterboy of THE WHIP STRAT. And he’s given you a 1.29 WHIP. So he’s off the list for next year!
Here’s that piece from February:
The WHIP Strat: 2026
I introduced this idea last year, and I explained it in full in that post. Click below to read that, and see the pitchers it ended up recommending a season ago.
My example WHIP STRAT STAFF from this year’s drafts:
Jacob deGrom (ADP 50)
George Kirby / Joe Ryan (ADP 70)
Spencer Schwellenbach (ADP 90)
Nathan Eovaldi (ADP 150)
Shota Imanaga (ADP 180)
Matthew Boyd (ADP 240)
Logan Henderson (ADP 280)
Bailey Ober (ADP 310)
That group of nine pitchers has a 1.16 WHIP this year.
The league is at 1.31, qualified SPs are at 1.24. So it’s giving you better than averaage WHIP (I’d freaking hope so!), but it’s not worked out the way we thought it would.
The sub-one WHIP gang this year:
Ah yes, Casey Mize - just as we suspected! It’s hard to predict the future, don’t you know!
But of course, the entire existence of this Substack is for me to be better at predicting the future than most people and then to tell you what to do. I’m not sure I’ve fulfilled my goal! But we’re having fun, aren’t we?
Brandon Sproat - 6.0IP 6H 3ER 3R 5K 3BB
Tyler Mahle - 6.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 3K 2BB
Little pitcher’s duel in San Francisco, many such cases!
Sproat is kinda good, but it’s unclear. He goes back-and-forth, and this wasn’t all that great of a start anyways. You probably should throw a qualbanger in SF against this Giants team. He threw 97 pitches, and he’s been above 85 in five straight. So the Brewers are getting their innings out of him. His season K-BB% is at 12.6% with a 3.80 JA SIERA. Not great. Better in the last seven (17% K-BB%, 3.27 JA SIERA), so maybe the Brewers and him are figuring it out.
As for Mahle, he continues to crush at home.
9 GS, 51 IP, 2.65 ERA, 1.14 WHIP
That’s on a bad 10.4% K-BB%, but a very good 0.88 HR/9. It’s a good park for him.
Noah Schultz - 3.33IP 2H 3ER 3R 5K 2BB
Gotta call a spade a spade, gotta call a Schultz a Schultz. Every pitcher named Schultz is bad. It’s science.
2021-2026 Schultz stats:
Noah is 40% owned… probably just because he’s tall and was a top(ish) prospect and people don’t want to recognize reality.
There are a number of single-digit K-BB% guys above 30% owned, and I don’t know why.
I guess the ownership is warranted on Ray and Martinez and E-Rod to some extent. They’ve been good in the box score, but it can’t continue. I’d be fading every pitcher ever for all of eternity if they don’t have at least a 13% K-BB%. l guess, in some leagues, you don’t have that privilege. But major crash downs have to happen for Robbie Ray and Eduardo Rodriguez. Little doubt about that.
The battle of the MK’s in Pittsburgh last night didn’t turn out like we thought.
Mitch Keller - 5.33IP 6H 2ER 2R 4K 1BB
Merrill Kelly - 5.67IP 4H 0ER 1R 6K 1BB
They are basically the same pitcher, and they did basically the same thing last night in their matchup. Look at their numbers from 2024-2026:
Same guy!
Four hitters I want to cover!
Fransisco Lindor had 46 fantasy points yesterday. The Mets kinda went OFF. Two dingers, six RBI for Lindor. It was a long time coming. He’s been unlucky this year.
The injuries are long behind him now, and I think last night was a sign of the good rest of season that is coming.
Alex Bregman had two doubles and a dinger for 33 fantasy points. That brought his July line up to a palatable point:
.231/.307/.462, 4 HR
Still not very good (.768 OPS), but it’s been his best month and we’ve seen four of his 11 homers come in the last 11 games.
Joc Pederson has quietly had a bounce-back year. He’s up to an .855 OPS now with 19 bombs.
He looked completely cooked last year with a .614 OPS and a .181 AVG, but he’s back to that 2024 form this year. He might even set a new seven-year best in homers.
Pederson has a 1.050 OPS in July with five bombs. He’s hit 17 bombs since May began, tied for 16th-most in baseball over that time.
Onto the automated and to the Tuesday night slate!
