Maybe us modern baseball eggheads are ignorant. Maybe you still do need to do the old school scouting. I try to be open minded to all possibilities, at least at the beginning. I think it’s fine to close your mind eventually. You can’t just sit there your whole life never coming to any conviction. But at this point, I’d still be willing to hear an old school baseball scout out.
I just don’t understand what you could gather from an in-person scouting report on an established Major League pitcher. Every pitch Skubal has ever thrown in the Major Leagues has been captured in high definition video with every single data point imaginable captured down to the millimeter. It’s Tarik Skubal. He’s really freaking good. What do teams think they’ll learn from sending a guy out there to see it? Did they think Skubal might not be real? Has he been AI this whole time? Did they want to check on his pre-game nutrition plan?
Maybe there’s a good answer. Maybe it’s even analytics-based. Maybe the Phillies have their own version of data capture that they wanted to send there to get some extra data points. I don’t know, but obviously this seems silly. Seems like one of those situations where they have these scouts on the payroll and just need them to have something to do.
The problem with data nerds in sport is that they’ll never get respect from players. Imagine if I worked for the Pirates and found something in data that a pitcher needed to be aware of. So little old 150-pound me approaches Paul Skenes with a spreadsheet and a scatter plot to teach him something about pitching. It’s absurd on its face. The younger players, and particularly Skenes who seems like a really cool guy, would probably be open to that. They learned pitching through data rather than the more traditional approaches. So not a great example I gave, I guess - but you see the potential issue there.
Manny Machado and other players have been vocal even this year about being skeptical of analytics. I doubt that guy would give a little twerp like me the time of day. So as a team, you have to factor that in. You have to meet your employees where they are. You’ve gotta send the 60 year old former big leaguer to talk to him in his language, you’re not going to accomplish anything sending the 25 year old math major who can’t get a batting practice ball out of the infield.
But that’s not what we’re talking about with scouting Skubal. I’d like to know more about that.

That’s 45 strikeouts and two walks in his last four starts. That’s quite a run. You’d think he’d have like a 1.25 ERA, but he’s given up nine earned runs for a 3.00 ERA. The WHIP is 0.63 though. It’s been an amazing season from Gavin. And the lesson we learn here is to give these huge pitchers with elite stuff a lot of time to settle in. It took Gavin four seasons to find this groove, but now he’s looking like a top ten pitcher in the game.
Still a pretty mediocre 3.71 ERA for the year, but his 2.39 JA SIERA is sixth-best in baseball (19 GS minimum).

He’s learned into the swepeer lately and that has pitch has been crushing. He’s at a 127 MLB DW grade on the sweeper and he’s above 110 with his other two primaries. Insanely good pitcher and definitely an SP1 for next year’s drafts.
Chase Burns is trending in the opposite direction.

Sound the alarm bells? Is he he wearing down in his first full season carrying a big league starter’s load?
He gave up an unearned grand slam in the first inning of this one. It was 4-0 immediately, but an error before the grannie made those four runs all unearned.
If you sold on him right around the time we were talking about that, you’re looking really good.
The fastball hasn’t been getting whiffs in the last five. We talked about that in a DFS slate preview two days ago when he was lined up to start on Monday before the rainout.
Over his last four outings, he has just an 18% K%, a 13.6% BB%, and a .309 xwOBA allowed (4.89 JA SIERA).
The slider is still crushing, but something has gone wrong with the fastball. The velo is down:
It’s still 97mph, which should be more than enough, but he’s not the same guy as the dude who was in the Cy Young conversation a month or so ago. And yet, he’s given up just six earned runs in his last four starts and his season ERA sits at 2.40.
So we probably won’t get a big discount on him next year because the ERA is unphased by all of this, and the right answer probably is just that he’s fatiguing a bit. You could certainly see the Reds doing one of those fake IL stints in a couple of weeks if they end up out of the playoff picture. Not great news for Burns, but the future is still just as bright as it always was, I’d say.
Logan Henderson - 5.67IP 2H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB
93 pitches! So he broke through past 90, which I didn’t know if they’d let him do. Another nice outing for Henderson who continues to impress. A 32% K% on the year now with a 5% BB% and a .255 xwOBA allowed. He has pitched like an ace ever since arriving. The injury sheet is long, so you have to keep worrying about that, but there are no legitimate questions about his ability to put up sparkling ratios in the Majors now. Impressive pitcher.
Taj Bradley - 6.0IP 3H 2ER 2R 10K 3BB
Ten strikeouts for Bradley against the Royals, who are a bad offense right now missing Witt (and Maikel Garcia, which is much less important but still true). 15 whiffs, a 14.7% SwStr%, a 57% Strike%. Very strong outing for Bradley who looks to be finishing up his breakout season well.
Gerrit Cole - 6.0IP 4H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB
Fell well short of a repeat double-digit strikeout start, but he continues to push that K% up. He’s at 26% now. He has at least six strikeouts in five straight outings, and he’s scored 23, 29, and 28 fantasy points in his last three. So he’s looking like an ace again.
Since July began: 5 GS, 30.1 IP, 2.97 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 33% K%, 3.4% BB%
You can’t say this is prime Gerrit Cole, because his prime was a 40% K% with 326 strikeouts and a 2.50 ERA back in 2019 when spider tack was allowed and the Astros were doing whatever else they were doing. But Cole is still an ace, apparently, and I doubted him!
Reid Detmers - 5.0IP 4H 2ER 2R 9K 1BB
Nine strikeouts for Detmers as he shows off for potential trade suitors. He has a 21% K-BB% on the season now. A bloated 4.10 ERA but a strong 1.10 WHIP.
Who knows what a non-Angels organization could do for this guy. He has always gotten strikeouts.
And that’s the most important thing, right? He had issues where the walk rate was high and the home runs were a problem and he just couldn’t be efficient. But he’s been really friggin’ good this year, dropping that BB% down to 7.4% and getting the homers mostly under control (1.1 HR/9).
Could be an ace in the future, and getting away from LA could only seem to benefit him. I’m not one to just say some MLB organizations have no idea how to develop pitchers. That doesn’t seem to make sense to me. You’d think every MLB org would have figured this out by now, but at some point you look at the Angels having basically no good pitchers for the last however many years and start to wonder what they’re not doing.
Michael King - 6.0IP 6H 4ER 4R 6K 1BB
Four runs on six hits, but a decent start for King. 16 whiffs against the Rockies in San Diego. Since June 22nd:
Very good ratios from King. He’s so tough to get out of the ballpark, that’s always been true, but he’s reined in the walks enough to be very effective. He’s another guy up on the trade block. The Padres are in the Wild Card race, though, and he’s probably their best starting pitcher. So that would be weird, but maybe the Padres don’t actually think they have a good enough postseason chance to justify holding pat. The rotation right now is awful. King, Buehler, Vasquez, Canning, Marquez… one of the worst in baseball. It would be extremely ugly if they trade King, but I think it makes sense for them to restock on some younger talent and higher-upside long-term pitching prospects or young Major Leaguers. That organization has kinda spoiled all the money they spent on Machado and Tatis.
Brandon Pfaadt - 7.0IP 6H 0ER 0R 4K 1BB
I watched him carve up the Pirates. He was hitting the corners brilliantly. And now he rocks a 1.85 ERA since rejoining the rotation on June 30th.
Of course, the 13% K% immediately stops your thoughts about picking him up. He has a .274 BABIP and a 4% HR/FB over this time. But he’s still throwing strikes. His control is really good, that’s always been the case. And he hasn’t given up home runs lately, which has always been a big problem for him.
I don’t think it will last much longer. You can’t rely on hitting corners like he has been. His 7.6% SwStr% shows that he just can’t fool guys, so he’s fully reliant on locations. He’s helping the D’Backs bigly right now with. He had won five straight outings before last night when the bullpen blew his sixth in a row. But the D’Backs haven’t been beaten with him on the mound since they called on him again.
Cade Cavalli - 6.0IP 6H 2ER 3R 3K 2BB
Three strikeouts… the guy has been up-and-down like crazy with the strikeouts. But Cavalli has soft contact and ground balls in the bag too, so he can survive lower K games like this one. Since June 15th:

Slade Cecconi - 3.67IP 7H 4ER 4R 2K 1BB
Fastball velo was way up, but it didn’t really help.
He throws strikes and has a lot of pitches to throw, but no nastiness factor and that turns into some bad numbers.
Shane Bieber - 0.67IP 1H 4ER 4R 0K 6BB
42 pitches for two outs, six walks in the first inning. After a couple of good box score outings, he gave it all back. His season MLB numbers now:
22 strikeouts, 18 walks, seven homers. I think he’s washed. At least he got his 2020 Cy Young award, I guess.
Justin Wrobleski - 6.0IP 7H 5ER 5R 7K 0BB
A 7:0 K:BB, but the Mariners hit four homers off of him. He has a 32% K% in his last four starts, but the four homers last night jumped his HR/FB from 8% to 11%. I think 12-14% is where it’s going to be. There was a ton of luck going on early when he wasn’t getting any strikeouts. And then he started striking guys out. But his home run suppression has been unbelievably elite this year, and that changed last night.
Keep starting the dude though, obviously he’s earned must-start status.
Troy Melton - 7.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 5K 2BB
Great start from Melton, although just five strikeouts, in a Tigers DRUBBING of the Orioles.
They scored in every single inning! According to the Washington Post, this was just the 22nd time in baseball history that a team has done that. It helps being at home when you’re trying it, because you don’t have to hit in the ninth. Funny enough, the Royals did it earlier this month on July 6th.

Two bombs from Eduardo Valencia. Who is that? Well, he’s a 26-year-old catcher in the Tigers organization.
21 bombs on the season now, but the .826 OPS in AAA makes you think this was just a random pop-off game.
Kevin McGonigle added four hits and four runs to his probable AL ROY season.
He’s competing with Murakami, mainly, but he’s a big -240 favorite right now, and last night solidified that. An .816 OPS and he’s on his way to a 12-15 season or something like that. The OBP near .400 is really, really impressive. Still more walks than strikeouts. Just a very, very mature hitter with some untapped power in there. I think you’ll see a couple of .300/.380 season from McGonigle with 20+ homers.
Torkelson and Dingler put an 0/9 in there, which is always funny. You have Dingler on your team and you see the Tigers went for 14 runs on 19 hits and you think you have something big! And then a BOULDER. It’s poetry.
Two bombs for Dominic Canzone.
He’s on his way to 20-25 homers with a big .530 SLG. I guess he’s figured out how to play defense well enough to stick in the lineup.
He’s been better against lefties in a tiny sample size. But a .260/.313/.511 slash against righties is what we expected he could do (I actually thought he could do a bit better than that). This kind of season, I think, was inevitable for him if he was going to be given the reps.
Shohei Ohtani revealed that he has a second injury issue, but he had a couple of hits and a lead-off homer to ease the tensions there. He has a right bicep issue in addition to the left knee.
I don’t think we’ll see Ohtani pitch until mid-September when they start getting him ramped up again for the postseason, and that could be a best-case scenario really.
