It’s a very late start to the daily notes today. I’ve been doing work at my real job this week, which is a good job by me. Gotta keep everything moving well, gotta stay locked in and keep the paychecks and those corporate bennies flowing through. So shout out to me, I have once again performed above the minimum-required level.
What is wrong with PAUL SKENES? Many people are asking the question. The ERA is up to 3.90 after the worst start of his career.
ACTUALLY that’s wrong. He was forgiven some earned runs retro-actively, and my dashboards don’t pick that up. I will typically run a full refresh of the data at mid-season and at the end of the season, but as for now my scripts don’t reach back to get those corrections when they happen.
So let’s go to FanGraphs:
This is super interesting here. He has a better SIERA than last year at 2.98. But an ERA 1.65 runs higher.
THE GOOD NEWS:
30.1% K%
5.6% BB%
1.02 HR/9
That’s an elite K-BB%. It’s gotten a bit worse lately, but he still has a 12:4 K:BB in these last two bad starts.
The strand rate is important to note here:
2024: 86% LOB%
2025: 82% LOB%
2026: 66% LOB%
That’s bad luck. His career average is now 80%. The league average is around 70-75%. It makes sense that the best pitchers would be higher than that because they’re very hard to hit at all times, so they’d strand guys at a higher rate. But 66% this year should come up.
But that’s not nearly the full story. His stuff is just worse. Here’s 2025:
Here’s 2026:
There really aren’t huge differences here. we still call a 13.2% SwStr%, 35% Ball%, and .241 xwOBA very good. His four-seamer has awesome numbers. And that’s the most important thing. It’s still working even with less velo.
Maybe the difference is just with the command on the secondaries. Last year he had a 15% SwStr% on the sweeper, and he threw it a lot. He also threw his splitter more last year and it was fine.
I don’t want to spend two hours digging into every number. Maybe someone should do that, and I’m guessing there are people out there that are.
But to me, we can keep it pretty simple - because the basic stuff matters.
Last year:
.273 BABIP
9% HR/FB
17% RISP H%
There’s a ton of luck there, but people wanted to forgive him because he was so good. The aces seem to get the benefit of the doubt there. We overlook the luck they had because we think they’re just so good that they can control it. But that’s not right.
This year:
.266 BABIP
17% HR/FB
27% RISP H%
The HR/FB is a lot more normal and he’s had legit bad luck in stranding runners.
Watching him is uncomfortable though. He just can’t get quick outs.
Skenes is throwing 4.12 pitches per plate appearance this year. The league average is 3.89. The league leader is Nick Martinez at 3.39.
The nastiest guys will often have this problem because most times when you get a whiff, it means you have to throw another pitch to that batter. Skenes wasn’t efficient last year, either at 4.09. He is tough to hit, and he goes for a lot of chases with that sweeper. He’s not going to turn into a guy who is putting up a bunch of ten-pitch innings.
Also from watching him, it doesn’t seem like he’s been putting guys away. There have been so many two-strike pitches that get fouled off or miss the zone and don’t get the chase. We can check his two-strike performance on the dashboard:
2025: 17.7% SwStr%, 45.9% Strike%, 34.4% Ball%, .368 OPS
2026: 17.3% SwStr%, 48.4% Strike%, 32.2% Ball%, .415 OPS
So I was wrong about that! The whiffs are down a touch, but the strike rate is up (foul balls count in that, though), and the kicker is that the Ball% is down two points.
The more I look, the more I just want to say that Skenes:
Was lucky from 2024-2025
Has been unlucky in 2026
At the end of the day, it’s a a 30% K%, a 5.6% BB%, and a 1.02 HR/9. That’s a very good starter. Imagine if some rookie pitcher was out here with a 3.60 ERA coming off of two bad starts with these underlying numbers. We’d be SCREAMING buy low! But people want to get away from Skenes because of the lack of velo and these completely unheard of struggles from him.
So yeah, that’s my verdict. Skenes will be fine and you should try to buy low on him.
UNLESS you’re really panicked by this:
He’s been under 97 in six straight. BUT STILL, in those starts:
A 24% K-BB%! A 16.1% SwStr% But a .346 BABIP, 17% HR/FB, and 34% RISP H%. This looks like bad luck to me. I’m fully on the BUY side.
Of course, that won’t be possible for me to do because that scumbag PAUL, who has Skenes in our league, is reading this right now and he’ll know what I’m trying to pull off.
So I went ahead and offered him a trade. Maybe he’ll accept it before I finish these notes. I’d send him Hunter Greene for Paul Skenes and Sam Antonacci. I need that 2B/3B player desperately.
Taj Bradley had more strikeouts than whiffs. That doesn’t happen very often.
→ 5.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 11K 3BB
He had 10 whiffs and a 10.3% SwStr%. That’s only happened 23 times this year where a pitcher had 5+ strikeouts and fewer whiffs than strikeouts. His updated season numbers:
The fastball isn’t impressive, but the cutter, splitter, and curve are have been very good. I suppose he’s owned in most all leagues, but he seems like a legitimate 12-team guy. There will be bad starts because of his 32% FB% and bad fastball, but he’s been a lot more good than bad this year.
He got pulled at 78 pitches, I guess he was in some trouble. But he had racked up 17 whiffs before that. A 21.8% SwStr% and 33.3% Ball% on the day. That’s very good. His K-BB% is up to 17% and he has a 13.8% SwStr% and 35.1% Ball% now witha .282 xwOBA allowed. He’s looking quite good. Just not getting deep into games. The good news there is that he threw 98 pitches in the start before this, so they’re willing to let him ramp it up there.
I’m becoming a believer in Drohan.
The pitch grades are awesome:
Not a lot of dudes wtih six 100+ grades out there. The Brewers might be doing it again with this guy.
I didn’t play DFS last night. I was going to go with Imai + Bradley but I just didn’t submit the lineup. I’m not sure how that would’ve gone, but Imai would’ve made me very upset for buying into him. This guy seems like the most boom-or-bust dude in the league right now.
-9, 30, 36, -8. The game log with the advanced numbers:
4, 20, 16, and 4 whiffs. What is it about, man? Some questions you can’t answer. Some guys just have it some nights and don’t the next. It’s all about feel and touch with the approach Imai takes. Apparently his slider moves in two difference directions depending on how he throws it, or something?
Here’s a plot:
So there’s a 25-inch difference there on the x-axis. I looked deGrom just for comparison:
So deGrom is almost always to the right of zero on the horizontal break, meaning it’s moving away from right handed hitters.
Imai’s are the opposite, mostly.
This is not new information to people in the know, but it is new to me. There’s an article breaking it down here.
He’s not the only guy who does this. Here’s the lowest horizontal breaks from slider thrown by righties this year. Only a dozen guys are below zero, meaning their sliders move in the opposite direction from normal:
So that’s all very strange. It does make sense that his command would be super spotty and would result in these days where he just can’t do anything. Remember that his fastball sucks. So if he’s not fooling dudes out of their boxer briefs with the slider, he’s trash. And that’s what we’ve seen. I’d be off of him entirely for fantasy leagues, find someone else to take that ride on him. Sounds awful to me. Just throw your slider like everyone else does, man. Stop trying to be so individualistic.
It’s been a doozy for Tolle as well. Rookie pitchers, man! He just fired off seven scoreless against the Yankees the time before this, which made you feel great. But he gave up six runs on seven hits yesterday. The problem was walks and two homers.
He’s now walked at least two in seven of his last eight. His season BB% still isn’t a problem, but it’s getting worse, and he’s a fly ball pitcher. So he’ll have some bad ones, I guess. I still like the 17% K-BB% and the 13.3% SwStr% and the 31.2% Ball%. So I’m not dropping him, but he’s not going to be an ace this year, I don’t think. And I kinda thought he could be a few weeks ago.
That’s a success in Coors. Six hits, no walks, five strikeouts in a quality start. He did give up five runs. He gave up an unearned run on a homer. I guess that happened after an error that should have finished the inning.
You could argue about unearned runs. If you give up a dinger, shouldn’t that be an earned run no matter what? But then again, you shouldn’t have had to throw that pitch in that inning if a two-out error was made! But it’s good for the Meyer owners. 16.7% SwStr% last night as he keeps on surviving with the slider/sweeper.
I’d sell him, though. I say it every time. His fastball is garbage and you usually can’t be good for very long with that going on.
I don’t have any more time today, sorry about that.
