What is happening! It’s a long weekend. And I’m hyped up for it. July 4th is the best. What a great country we live in. I’ve got a nine pound pork butt seasoned up and ready to cook today, we’ve got a pool, I’ve got a bunch of firecrackers and Yuenlings, and we’re ready to do some stuff! So I hope you’re all happy and stuff, too.
Dalton Rushing had the biggest hitting day. A homer, three runs, four RBI. Remember how well he started the year?
Seven homers in April, three ever since. He’s been forced to play more with Will Smith out, but man he hadn’t hit anything at all in May-June.
Jake McCarthy had the second most hitter points with a home, three runs, four RBI, and a walk. He’s doing his thing even on the road. Hits and steals with a few homers here and there.
Mickey Moniak had a big one. Three hits, a homer, three runs, 2 RBI. He was on the IL for a long time but he’s right back at it - slashing .281/.303/.688 in 33 PAs since coming off the IL. His splits are crazy, though.
He does most of his damage at home against righties. Just .219 AVG on the road with a 32% K%. And a 43% K% against lefties this year. That’s wild, but he’s very, very good at hitting righties at home (1.171 OPS).
Jordan Walker hit his 19th.
He’s still up there at .291/.344/.519. It really hasn’t slowed down much. The barrel rate has dropped into the 13% range as the lauch angle has come down.
But he’s not striking out too much and the skills are playing. He’s at 11 steals as well. So he’s on pace for a near 40-20 season.
Kyle Tucker is the other guy to mention. Four hits, three runs, an RBI, and a walk. On base five times last night! It’s coming around a bit:
Since June 15th:
I can’t believe how hard Framber Valdez screwed me over. He was my guy in DFS in Texas, but only like 30% of people played him with me and then he had a horrible start.
→ 5.0IP 9H 5ER 5R 1K 2BB
So that was really, really dumb. Guess you can’t trust a guy with an 18% K%.
Just like Max Meyer on Wednesday, Jacob Misiorowski gave up more homers than earned runs. I guess it happens a little more often than I thought, there have been seven instances of HR > ER:
The anti-Misiorowski people are up in arms about it. The error was questionable, and it kept four earned runs off his ledger. I’m really on the fence about it. If you give up a home run after there should have been three outs recorded but an error was made, should that be earned? Home runs are totally your fault as the pitcher, and you would have, in theory, had to face that hitter the next inning anyway. So should it be earned? Probably not.
But what if that applied to real life? What if I have to work late one day because someone else got sick - and I accidentally delete several critical databases after I should have been off the clock. Is that unearned? Do I escape punishment on my record for that?
Nathan Eovaldi
→ 5.0IP 6H 3ER 3R 9K 1BB
Bryce Miller
→ 7.0IP 2H 0ER 0R 8K 0BB
These were the popular guys in DFS and I should have played both.
Miller is up to a stupid 31% K-BB%. I can’t believe how good he is.
The pitch mix:
Just super domination on the fastball and splitter, and then all of those other pitches to mix in. Sick stuff, Bryce Miller is the man.
Dustin May
→ 0.67IP 5H 5ER 5R 1K 2BB
That went bad. Two straight disasters for May now after the awesome run he went on from late May to late June.
You can never know what that guy will give you. And he’s given up 11 ER in 2.2 innings the last two starts!
Roki Sasaki is a bum loser again. I’m sorry I got people onto him, even though it did work a couple of times.
→ 3.0IP 7H 6ER 6R 3K 2BB
Three dingers, all of his pitches sucked. He’s bad again.
Ian Seymour
→ 6.0IP 3H 1ER 1R 8K 1BB
Just getting the job done for the Rays! 83 pitches last night, good results.
Nice 18.1% SwStr% with a 34% Ball%. Great stuff there. The sweeper and fastball and changeup all grade very well. So we’re liking what he’s doing.
This Alan Rangel guy has had to fill in for the Phillies after they demoted Painter. He took on the Pirates and held them scoreless:
→ 4.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 4K 4BB
Let’s look at the pitches:
Small samples here. Looks like a bad fastball and a really good changeup with a decent slider.
This is a 28 year old who did this in the minors this year:
He’s been a AAA dude, just an organizational depth guy I guess. Nothing special here, but he handled himself okay last night.

It’s pretty amazing what my boy Esmerlyn Valdez is doing. He’s #2 on xwOBA OE last 15 days.
To do this, you have to swing the bat hard and hit the ball hard. Esmerlyn does that. But in just 35 PAs, it is something you can kinda luck into.
64 PAs in now with a 1.112 OPS and the K% has dropped to 32.8% while the barrel rate remains above 29%.
The xBA tells you a lot. We’d happily take .260 from him. He has a .215 xBA against righties, though, with a 38% K%:
He’ll have to clean that up to stay as an every day big leaguer. But he’s an exciting profile being just 22 years old.
The Pirates offense is really good. I never thought I’d say those words. There are three teams above 450 runs. The Dodgers, Nationals, and Pirates. Who saw that coming?
This Pirates / Nationals series should be firework city. I’m excited to watch those games, to watch some soccer, and to hang out with the kids for a few days. I’mma get to it! Have a good weekend, God Bless America!
