It’s trade deadline day! Big day, one of the most fun of the MLB season every year. Let’s look at some of what’s already happened.
So far the trades with the most immediate impact have been relievers. We saw
→ Jhoan Duran to the Phillies for Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait
→ Ryan Helsley to the Mets for Jesus Baez, Nate Dohm, and Frank Elissalt
→ Tyler Rogers to the Mets for Jose Butto, Blake Tidwell, and Drew Gilbert
I don’t know much about any of those prospects, butin each case it does seem like high returns for relief pitchers. That sets the market, I suppose. We could see a guy like Mason Miller go for a big return, and I’m sure there will many more relievers moved today.
So we have closer vacancies in Minnesota and St. Louis. We can’t for sure who the replacements would be right now, because those setup men could also be moved today.
I’d say Griffin Jax is a pretty strong add in Minnesota. He’s one of the best relievers in the game and I think he’ll stay put in Minnesota. If not, Louis Varland would be the guy to target.
It would be Phil Maton in St. Louis, but he’s an impending free agent so they’ll likely be looking to move him. That could set up JoJo Romero to get saves.
It’s great news for Jhoan Duran as he goes to one of the best teams in the leagues. It’s bad news for Ryan Helsley, who will almost surely be behind Edwin Diaz in the pecking order. I’d say if you’re in a league where you don’t have holds and the impact that relievers can have on ratios is low, you could cut Helsley. Maybe it’s too early for that, but I don’t really think so. I doubt Helsley grabs many saves there.
I suppose the biggest move so far was not a reliever, it was Eugenio Suarez going back to Seattle. This happened when I was dead, dead asleep last night. Although I did have to get up around midnight because a picture fell off our wall downstairs and it scared my wife so I had to go downstairs to confirm it was just a picture on the ground and not an ax murderer. I have this baseball bat by my bed and usually I’d take it down with me just in case, but for some reason I really, really confident that there was no murdered downstairs. I didn’t even put my glasses on, I just walked down there blind and completely unprepared for a fight. But yeah, the picture was on the ground and I fell back asleep so fast.
If you have Eugenio Suarez, you should not like to hear about this landing spot. Suarez has done his worst work by far in Seattle. Here’s a tweet from ME about it.
It looked like Suarez was totally washed after those two years in Seattle, but then he proved that he wasn’t by being one of the best hitters in the league over the last two years.
The speculation is that it has something to do with the batters eye in Seattle. There could be something to that, but it’s probably not entirely about that.
Any time we are doing splits and trying to guess at park factors, we’re in the realm of randomnesse and variance. But it’s probably worth noting that road hitters have fared much better in Seattle this year compared to the last couple:
Road Hitters in Seattle
2023: .290 wOBA, 26% K%, 7.1% BB%, 78.9% Z-Cont%
2024: .260 wOBA, 27% K%, 5.4% BB%, 79.2% Z-Cont%
2025: .291 wOBA, 23% K%, 7.4% BB%, 82.5% Z-Cont%
If we look at Z-Contact% for all hitters there:
2023: 79.6%
2024: 78.8%
2025: 80.5%
So that’s shot up significantly this year. I have asked Grok 4 if the Mariners made any changes that could have affected the batters vision there ahead of this year. Grok 4 is thinking hard about it right now. They changed that bot so it really does some thinking before it gives you an answer. Which I like. I’d like us to go backward somehow away from instant gratification. Nobody has to wait for anything anymore, and I think that probably has some consequences. I mean I ordered notebooks on Amazon the other day and they got to my house in like 14 hours. I didn’t need them that bad, man. You could have taken your time.
I remember the first time I ever got an Amazon delivery on a Sunday. I was stunned. Nobody ever used to do anything on Sundays. I remember in the 90s growing up, only the grocery stores were open (more or less). And you surely weren’t getting packages. But now it’s just full on full go all the time, no days off.
I feel like we should go full Sabbath and just shut everything down one day a week. And this isn’t even coming from me as a Christian, just as a guy who realizes that when you start getting everything you want really fast, you stop appreciating pretty much everything in life.
Anyways. Here’s Grok’s answer. But the summary is YES, they did. So, this is good news for Suarez if his problems in Seattle were really about the park. Regardless, it’s fine, there’s no real notable fantasy baseball impact here.
Ke’Bryan Hayes went to the Reds. He has 34 xHR in PNC Park for his career. In Cincy, it would be 58. You’ll always add some homers going into Cincinnati, but the power production is still going to be completely useless in fantasy leagues. Maybe the Reds will change his swing to fit the park, but that won’t happen immediately.
The Reds also nabbed Zack Littell, which seems like a really dumb idea. Littell has given up the most home runs in the league this year (26) and has surrendered a 29% FB%. I suppose the park move from TB → CIN isn’t a huge difference since they’re both extremely friendly home run parks, but he’s not going to do any better in Cincy. I suppose it opens the door for the return of Taj Bradley to the rotation, unless Shane McClanahan rises from the dead. And he’s been dead 7 times already this year, so we’re running out of time.
The Cubs got Michael Soroka, which was a nice cheap SP add for them. It’s not the big splash they need to really make them a World Series favorite, but it’s a positive move. The Cubs will roll into the playoffs with a fantastic lineup but a rotation without a true ace and without much depth. But they’re better now than they were yesterday.
Soroka has a 25.4% K%, a 7.0% BB%, and a 3.13 JA ERA on the year. He’s been worse lately, but he’s clearly a legit MLB pitcher. He’s also sick against righties (21% K-BB%, 3 HR, .273 xwOBA, 2.91 JA ERA, 1.83 WHIP+). Decent guy to have on the hill to face a right-hand heavy lineup once or twice in a big game.
That’s it for the big news that has happened so far. I’m not sure my commentary on these matters is useful to anybody. But I have a fantasy baseball blog and it’s July 31st, so it seems illegal to not give thoughts and analysis on some of these trades.

I’m focused mostly on the deadline today, and I’m also working on another report to help you guys locate useful long relievers to help you in leagues where you have a GS limit. But I have to drop notes on a couple of guys from yesterday.
Joey Wentz now has a 1.50 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP with a 23.4% K-BB% in his 18 innings as a Brave. He has been throwing more cutters since getting to Atlanta (42.5% cutter, 38.6% FF, 19% CU). I have serious doubts that Joey Freaking Wentz ends up as a useful fantasy guy. But I don’t know, crazier things have happened. He has a 13.7% SwStr%, 34.4% Ball% and a 2.27 JA ERA in this very small sample. He’s a streamer now, I guess.
Yu Darvish threw seven scoreless after giving up eight earned runs in his prior start. That’s fun. He’s at a 19% K% and 8.5% BB% for his short season sample. That was his first good start in five tries, so I suppose he should be left alone on waivers, but it’s interesting to see that he’s still capable of a nice 7:0 K:BB.
MacKenzie Gore is super busted. Since June 20th: 7 GS, 36 IP, 6.06 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, 17.9% K%, 13.6% BB%.
Mike Burrows is sort of good I keep saying it! He took advantage of a good matchup in SF and raised his season K-BB% to 16.3%. He has a 12.1% SwStr% and a 36.1% Ball% with a 24.5% K% and 8.2% B%. So I guess he’s more of a league-average kind of arm, but that puts him in streamer territory.
Chris Paddack qualbanged in his first Tigers start. And you know what, this guy has a 19.6% K-BB% and a 3.04 JA ERA in July (112 batters faced). He’s been throwing the changeup a little more. It will be interesting to see if the Tigers change anything with him. But hey, he’s got 25 strikeouts and just three walks in these last 27 innings, so maybe he’s not a complete and total loser like we thought.
Bryan Woo gave up five earned in a rare bad start. But this guy has cleared six innings every time this year. Every time. That is astounding. Old school stuff throwing six innings like that! I bet Bryan Woo doesn’t like getting packages on Sundays.
Two rookies double-barreled, Colson Montgomery and Roman Anthony. I went over C-Mont on X yesterday. He has power, he swings the bat hard, but there will be contact issues and pitchers will probably adjust soon and start throwing him fewer in-zone fastballs. A coldy is coming, I think.
As for Anthony, he has been putting it together. This is the trend you like to see:
The Red Sox have shown full confidence in him. He’s their lead-off man now. I like to forgive the first 100 PAs of a guys career. He only has around 180 PAs so far, so we are chopping off most of the sample. But just for the sake of it, in Anthony’s last 80 PAs he’s hitting .344/.475/.531 with a 25 K%, a 16% BB%, and a 9.1% Brl%.
The guy does not like to swing the bat. His swing rate is higher than only Juan Soto’s. So that means you’re going to get a ton of walks and a good OBP. But it also costs him some homers. We’ve rarely seen Soto go for the big 40+ homer season, and that has a lot to do with the fact that he doesn’t even give himself a chance to hit a homer in almost a fifth of his trips to the plate. Walks are good for what they’re good for, and it’s a nice real-life skill to have, but it really could end up capping Anthony’s home runs and RBI ceiling.
Only three games today, so no slate preview or anything like that. But I’ll get this new “long relievers to target” report done this morning and send that out for paid subs. Happy deadline day!
We’re taking the kids up to a beach on Lake Michigan this afternoon, so unfortunately you won’t get as many of my elite quick analysis tweets on these trades as you would otherwise. But I trust you will survive it. Just be strong. Try to think back to the days when Twitter didn’t exist and you’d have to wait full days to get sports analysis from your favorite writers! Back when you had to wait until Monday for your notebooks to arrive in the mail.
