Check out yesterday’s box scores here
Let’s hit all of these pitchers from yesterday.
Roki Sasaki: 5.33IP 5H 2ER 2R 7K 3BB
Pretty good again. 18 whiffs, 20% SwStr%, 32.2% Ball%. You love to see all of that. The fastball velo remained above 98, which seems to be the sweet spot for him.
His last three: 29.5% K%, 8.5% BB%, 19.8% SwStr%, 34.5% Ball%, 2.77 JA SIERA, 2.44 JA ERA. Looking elite again, dare I say it!
Sean Burke: 6.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 10K 2BB
Ten strikeouts! Burke was one of my better takes of the year, I liked the guy a bit in the offseason, but I’m still shocked at how good he’s been.
Season:
Last 11 starts:
He has pitched like one of the best SPs in the entire league.
The fastball has been great for him with a 14.8% SwStr%. and a 30% Ball%. Not many pitchers have fastballs like that, and it’s surprising that it’s coming on just a 95mph average velo. Maybe it’s over-performing a bit.
But he has plenty of offerings behind it and they’ve all been pretty good. If you could sell Burke as a true SP1 in fantasy leagues, I’d do it - but most leagues are getting beyond their trade deadlines anyway and you should probably just ride this breakout season out from Burke.
Bryan Woo: 5.0IP 5H 5ER 5R 8K 2BB
Good strikeout total, lots of whiffs 17), but a homer and five earned runs on five hits. He’s been bad on the road:
Like really, really bad on the road. Is he just a T-Mobile Park merchant??
Last year on the road he at least had a 3.21 ERA and a 1.03 WHIP, but this year he’s been awful away from home.
Eury Perez: 6.0IP 3H 1ER 2R 6K 2BB
Very good again! Not a strikeout barrage, but six in six innings and another start not having walk or home run issues. He’s pitching like an ace since getting back from the IL. What a turnaround, too. First he was pitching terribly, and then he took an injury that looked like it could be long-term. So it seems he gets “rushed back” a bit but then comes back and starts pitching like an ace.
Noah Cameron: 8.0IP 1H 0ER 0R 7K 2BB
Cameron can rip off starts like this from time-to-time. He’s an Andrew Abbott clone. Usually bad with his lack of strikeout ability, but sometimes he has the touch and the command and gets out very, very quickly. And the Twins don’t have Byron Buxton right now, so it wasn’t a tough matchup.
Too bad they couldn’t bring him a win. Did you see the Kody Clemens walk-off grand slam? Down 0-3, two outs, bases loaded, TWO STRIKES, walk off grannie OFF A LEFTY. The ultimate spot for Clemens there to help the Twins steal a win.
Grant Holmes: 4.67IP 5H 3ER 3R 4K 2BB
No comment really, Grant Holmes is just a guy.
Rhett Lowder: 6.0IP 5H 2ER 2R 5K 0BB
The model was loving some Lowder last night, and I used him in DFS. I didn’t really understand the good projection, but it was there. And he had a great start against the sputtering Pirates.
He’s been throwing a little harder:
Two decent starts in a row now for him. Maybe he’s figuring something out. He has a 5.42 ERA on the season, but did give up 11 hits and eight earned in Coors a few weeks ago.
I don’t think he’ll ever be anything other than a 15-team target, but he looked good last night, and he was a former 1st round pick.
Bailey Ober: 6.0IP 4H 2ER 3R 3K 2BB
Quality start for Ober to keep the Twins in that game. Ober has a 4.45 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, a 17.2% K%, and a 6.6% BB% this year with a 1.45 HR/9. He’s no good, but at least the home run rate isn’t completely out of control like I kinda thought it would be once he lost his fastball velo.
Shane McClanahan: 3.0IP 0H 1ER 1R 3K 2BB
Hurt! Back tightness, shouldn’t be a huge issue. But you never like to hear about a back thing from a pitcher.
Robbie Ray: 6.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 6K 1BB
Another good outing from Ray. Last seven starts now:
Never thought we’d see Robbie Ray giving up just one home run in nine outings. Makes no sense as a fly ball pitcher, even making half of these starts in San Francisco. He had a 1.1 HR/9 last year (182 IP), and it’s down to 1.0 this year, so I guess it’s not much different. I just can’t forget the 2021-2024 guy where he was above 1.5 HR/9.
JP Sears: 3.67IP 7H 3ER 3R 2K 1BB
Didn’t get it done, he’s not good.
Nolan McLean: 6.33IP 6H 2ER 2R 6K 2BB
He’s way down on the list here because he only had ten whiffs (10.1% SwStr%). But he got outs and got into the seventh inning with six strikeouts and two walks. Since June 30th:
And he has a 3.29 ERA and 1.12 WHIP on the year with a 20% K-BB% (rounding up a touch). So he’s very good; it just doesn’t come in the prettiest fashion.
Sonny Gray: 7.0IP 7H 4ER 4R 5K 2BB
Red Sox took 3 of 4 in Sacramento. Their offense did kinda disappoint again, scoring jus three times on Masno Barnett and striking out six times. But they’re happy with the series win there.
Nick Kurtz was back in the lineup, but Sonny Gray was able to do enough to get the win (to go to 13-2, by the way). Only nine whiffs, but that’s kinda Gray’s game. Similar to McLean, lots of foul balls and called strikes to help them get strikeouts.
Ryan Weathers - 7.0IP 3H 0ER 0R 4K 3BB
Seven scoreless against the White Sox, but just eight whiffs, a 7.5% SwStr%, and a 41.5% Ball%. Seems to me like he was really lucky to get that result.
We will see what Will Warren does today, but those two are competiting right now for a rotation spot as Rodon is nearing a return.
Elly De La Cruz
Huge game for Elly. Three hits, three doubles, two runs, two steals, and a walk. 33 fantasy points without a dinger. And he basically beat the Pirates by himself; I watched it. The Reds won 3-2 and Elly was involved in all three runs. He scored the winning run in the 9th. Big game from Elly showing his skills.
One thing to note again is that Elly might struggle to get to 30 steals. And this just two years after he stole 67!
The 40%+ attempt rates don’t last long. Very few players actually do this year-in and year-out. You’ll see with the guys who are only in the Majors because they can run, but with a stud player like Elly, you were always going to see the steals come back into a more normal range.
Luis Garcia Jr. kept it going. Three hits, a two, two RBI, a homer. The Nats fell short of the Braves here (5-4), but Garcia did his part.
Garcia’s trend:
The June was insane, 11 homers out of nowhere. But he hasn’t given much back in July with a .973 OPS and seven more dingers.
Daylen Lile joined Garcia with a big game, two homers for him (his 12th and 13th).
He’s 50 points in AVG below what he did last year, and that was a reason people were excited about drafting him this year. But he ha 13 homers and ten steals now, and that has some value. He’s hitting .235/.270/.506 in July, so it’s a power-or-nothing approach, I guess. Kind of a strange player, and overall he’s been a ratios killer without giving you enough to make up for it in HR+SB. But a good game for him last night.
Teoscar Hernandez
Nice game from Teoscar, hitting his first homer since July 3rd. Teoscar might be cooked now:
K% up to 27%, HR% down to 3.1%. Bat speed is down:
Age! Even the Dodgers players get worse with age.
Jac Caglianone hit his second homer of the second half. He has not had a good July (.643 OPS) after the big June. But showed it again last night.
He’s got a 48% GB% since June began, but a 14.4% Brl%. So he’s fine, but the cold streaks are probably still going to come until he finds the consistent swing.
Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a bomb. He’s back, in case you missed that, but it’s been awhile since he’s avoided the IL for a couple straight months.
The bat speed is also down:
The numbers this year are fine, but he’s not the same guy he used to be.
A .254 xBA, a .379 xwOBA, a .776 OPS, a 23% K%,, a 14.3% Brl%. It’s all fine, he’s a player you want in the lineup, but this isn’t “#1 overall player in fantasy” Acuna anymore after all of the injuries.
That 2023 season will never make sense to me.

It’s a brilliant Friday night slate of baseball, and I am going to break it down in depth from a DFS perspective. I’m going to get to work on that. And John and I will have a Waiver Wire & Trade Deadline preview podcast coming this afternoon as well. Thanks for being here, should be a hella fun weekend in baseball news!
