Trade Deadline Review

I don’t want to do “winners” and “losers” for teams at the trade deadline. That’s the popular thing to do, but it’s tough to since all teams are approaching it differently. You have your clear World Series contenders that are trying to push things over the top (Yankees/Dodgers), you have your contenders that are handicapped salary-wise (Mets/Padres) and can’t do much, you have your middling teams who improve a little bit but don’t go over the top (Brewers/Braves/etc.), and then you have the all-out sellers (Marlins).

Yankees

They are off to the best start. They got into the market early and have already accumulated four homers and eight RBI from Jazz Chisholm in just four games. The most interesting story of last night was that they had a deal to acquire Jack Flaherty as well, but backed out after seeing some medical stuff. That doesn’t look all that great for the Dodgers, who did end up with him.

Orioles

I thought they would be the biggest buyer at the deadline. They have the offense figured out with a ton of prospects to trade, so it made sense that they would make a huge splash for another ace-level pitcher. They did end up giving up Connor Norby and Kyle Stowers for Trevor Rogers. I don’t think they’ll end up regretting losing Stowers, and they didn’t really need Norby with all of the infielders they have, but those two are a lot to lose for Rogers who is a replacement level SP at best. They also got Zach Eflin a few days ago, and he’s already made a start. I don’t know if those two even make their rotation much better, but they have some extra depth now. Interesting strategy from the Orioles. It probably just speaks to the market. The Marlins and Rays seemed to be the only teams dedicated to selling, so the big names like Garrett Crochet and Tarik Skubal must have been effectively off the market.

Athletics

I’m just a basement blogging bro, but I really think it was silly for them to hold onto Brent Rooker. I don’t have enough information to say that with full confidence, maybe they just weren’t being offered much because of the age and the DH thing. I just don’t think Rooker is going to be helping the Athletics past next year. I would also predict the guy performs much worse for the next 14 months than he has in the last 16. He strikes out too much, it’s that simple in my mind.

Cardinals

Everybody is grading their deadline as one of the top performances. I’m not sure Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham really warrant that. Fedde could certainly be a negative the rest of the season, and Pham has been about a league-average hitter this year (.267/.329/.389). They filled two needs, I suppose, but I don’t see how this is like an A grade like people are saying.

Dodgers

They made the big splash with Flaherty, who they’ll probably lose to free agency this off-season. If he stays healthy the rest of this year though, that’s a big add for them as they head into the playoffs. Somehow, the Dodgers have ended up with a need in the rotation. But if they are all healthy for the playoffs they’ll have Glasnow + Yamamoto + Kershaw + Flaherty for the playoffs, which is scary.

They also made some lesser acquisitions filling some needs with Michael Kopech, Tommy Edman and Amed Rosario.

Braves

I liked them getting Jorge Soler in the lineup, but they did not add to their rotation. That’s putting a lot of chips on the health of Fried and Sale as they head into a probable wild card spot.

Padres

They now have the best bullpen in the league, I think that’s fair to say.

Suarez + Scott + Adam + Estrada is crazy. So they set up very nicely for the playoffs even with a few pretty bad arms in their rotation. But if they can go into the playoffs with Cease + King + Musgrove and those four big bullpen arms, they’re in good shape.

Mariners

The big get was Arozarena, but they also sured up their bullpen. The lineup is still lacking with J-Rod on the shelf, but they might have the best overall pitching staff in the league at the current moment. Fine deadline from them, but I don’t think they’ll do too much damage in the playoffs without Rodriguez back to form.

Astros

Maybe the most interesting thing was what the Astros gave up for Yusei Kikuchi. Houston’s farm system is gross now with Joey Loperfido and Will Wagner going to Toronto along with pitcher Jake Bloss.

I wonder if this isn’t a closing window for the Astros. I remember them well when at the end of their National League days. They were one of the few teams worse than the Pirates some years! But then they just did a crazy good job with drafting and development and they’ve been this dynasty for awhile. But the pitching rotation has not been good lately, Bregman is heading out after this year, and Altuve is 34. I’m not sure what they’ll do, we could see a few really poor years out of Houston in the near-ish future.

White Sox

They did not move Luis Robert Jr. or Garrett Crochet. This is real bad news for Crochet owners. He has thrown 28, 74, and 64 pitches in his last three outings. My guess is that there will be a lot more of that kind of stuff down the stretch, and quite possibly a full-blown shutdown.

As for Robert, nothing changes, they’re not going to rest him in the same way they’d do with a pitcher, but he remains on one of the league’s worst offenses and there’s certainly no motivation boost possible here. Sucks for you if you have Crochet!

Pirates

Nothing fantasy-relevant here, but I can’t leave them off. I drank a Yuengling and made a tweet about how I once had a dream that Bryan De La Cruz was a Pirate, and then a few minutes later they had traded for Bryan De La Cruz.

The fact is that I never had such a dream, I just made that up because I figured the Pirates were going to land him. There were some rumors prior, but really it just made all the sense in the world. The Marlins were the only team really selling, and BDLC was the perfect price for the Pirates to pay. We all wish he played centerfield, but it’s fine. He’s the second best outfielder in the organization now, and he’s cheap and can be under team control for multiple years.

The other add was Isiah Kiner-Falefa. He is certainly over-performing at the plate this year and has never been much of a hitter, but he plays all over the diamond and that is something the Pirates did really need defensively. He can play some centerfield, so it will be nice to not have to have Michael A. Taylor’s bat in their every day, although Taylor did wake up and basically win the Pirates two games in Houston with homers in consecutive days. Don’t look now but he’s got a 1.714 OPS over his last seven plate appearances. Hell yeah Pirates are going to the World Series!

Pitcher Review

Robbie Ray blew it.

4.1 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 4 K, 3 BB, 3 HR

He went for a low 11.7% SwStr%, but a surprisingly fine 50% Strike%. The velocity came down a bit:

FF: 95.2 → 94.2
SL: 89.7 → 88.8
CU: 84.4 → 84.2

But those numbers are still above what we saw from him in 2022.

I bet you Robbie Ray hitters were extremely excited after the first start, and now you shouldn’t be so excited! Taking the two starts together we see an 18.3% SwStr%, a 51% Strike%, and a 38% Ball%. Pretty good, but I have no idea what I’d predict for the future.

Gavin Williams had his second-straight encouraging against the Tigers.

5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 8 K, 1 BB, 16 Whiffs, 17.8% SwStr%, 54.4% Strike%

Prior to these last two starts:

9.4% SwStr%, 46% Strike%, 37% Ball%

These last two starts:

16.9% SwStr%, 57% Strike%, 31% Ball%

Overall, the four-seamer is now up to a very good 54% Strike%. That’s incredibly important, and the fastball was the reason I have been high on Gavin Williams for his entire career at this point. It’s a (potentially) very good fastball, and we’ve seen that come to life in the last two. Would it be better if one or both of these starts were against a good team? YES. But we have to take what life gives us, and right now I’m adding/holding Gavin Williams for the future.

He will get ARI, MIN, MIL, KC, and PIT for his next four starts, so about middle of the road matchups. Good test for him.

Sean Manaea had the best outing of the day:

7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 11 K, 1 BB, 60.4% Strike%, 27.1% Ball%

But whatever, I don’t care about Manaea and you can’t make me.

JP Sears also went off for nine strikeouts, so it was a weird day. Everything was weird yesterday. The guy who took down the Hundo’s last night somehow ended up with Sears and Manaea, which is just nonsense. I’ve gone cold in DFS, but it’ll come back around when things happen like they should happen instead of life how they shouldn’t happen.

Hitter Review

Eugenio Suarez hit three homers yesterday.

Since June 15th, he is hitting .282/.368/.589 with 10 homers and a 28.5% K% across 144 PAs. So he’s making some hay on that Diamondbacks contract.

Brent Rooker homered again. He now has 11 in July to lead the league with a .410/.480/.867 line. Total stud at the dish and the K% is down to 17%. So maybe I should eat my words about what I said about him before, the season strikeout rate is down to 30.3%. I’m not taking anything back though! If you have had Rooker on your team all year, he’s been one of your best players and you acquired him very cheap, so he’s been one of the key players of the fantasy season.

Also homering for their new teams were Tommy Pham, Jazz Chisholm, and Austin Hays.

Jake Burger has a .308/.400/.692 slash line with four homers since the break. All of his friends have left him, though, so that’s a bit sad. Josh Bell ended up on the Diamondbacks yesterday. He has a .342/.444/.763 slash line in 45 PAs since the break with five homers. He’s nothing special, but probably an underrated hitter. Not much of a fantasy asset though, but he does get an upgrade as the D’Backs everyday first basemen while Christian Walker gets healthy. He could be a decent replacement if you’re putting Walker on the IL and need a first baseman.

Austin Wells is also seeing his value increase. He hit clean-up for the Yankees yesterday and has a .973 OPS in his 50 PAs since the second half began. For the year:

244 PA, .234/.332/.410, .742 OPS, 8 HR, 8.6% Brl%, 20% K%, 13% BB%, .352 xwOBA

All of the trades are behind us and now we hit go-time. Two months for your fantasy teams and real-life teams to finish things out. I hope all of your dreams have already come true.
