Happy Independence Day to you Americans out there! It’s a great day and a great country we live in. We’ve got all of the usual problems that come with human nature and prosperity, but it could be way, way worse.
I told the AI that I wanted to slow cook some pork and do a full meal for 12 people, so it gave me a shopping list and recipe that I followed, and it was delicious. The problem was that I failed to mention that four of the 12 were children, and five of the others were small women who don’t eat much. So I legit made 3x more food than I needed. So I’ll be eating pulled pork and cole slaw for like the next 12 lunches.
But that’s a good problem to have. Even just having a full grocery store is a blessing, right? We complain about the cost of things, but across human history it usually hasn’t even been an option to buy the things you need for any price at all conveniently! If you’re in northern Indiana and need some pork, let me know.
Dylan Cease continues his sweet season. Seven scoreless, no runs, just one walk, and nine strikeouts. Those K’s have been so consistent. He has 143 in 90.1 innings now. He’s been under six just once all year, and at 10+ on five occasions.
The fastball + slider + changeup trio are cooking. The SwStr% rates on all three of those are ridiculous. The only issue is some inefficiency with the walks, because he doesn’t have a home run issue this year. So he’s an ace. He was a great signing by Toronto and a really sharp fantasy pick this year.
Ryan Feltner crushed the Giants in Coors while his teammates beat up on Logan Webb. That didn’t go the way we thought. Feltner’s capable of having some good starts. The stuff isn’t horrible. His slider is pretty good, his changeup his nice.
So he’s one of the Rockies' better arms, and he showed that last night.
Jake Bennett was next on the list. He was a popular waiver wire add and that paid off. Six scoreless, nine strikeouts, no walks. He now has a 20:0 K:BB in his last three.
The name of the game with Bennett is no walks and soft contact. Just a 6.8% Brl% allowed, a 9% Air Pull% allowed, a 52 PA/HR, and that 3.8% BB%. Good stuff from Bennett, who is getting the job done despite not having much in the STUFF department.
I doubt he allows a 0.66 HR/9 for much longer, and you don’t like the strikeout rate he has, but hey he’s getting the job done and should probably already have been owned in 12-teamers for that matchup last night.
Gerrit Cole had his better fastball last night velo-wise, but still didn’t get whiffs with it. Seven strikeouts on eight whiffs and a homer. He’s given up eight longballs now in eight starts.
Good to see the lack of walks, but he’s not a strikeout pitcher anymore, I’m afraid. Look at the DESCENT of the strikeout rates from Cole:
Things are much different now in MLB and with Cole’s arm than they were in 2018-2019. SPIDER TACK Cole was one of the most dominant pitchers of all time. Aging takes it toll, and so does major elbow surgeries. But I like Gerrit Cole, man. I have good memories with that guy.
I was working my first job out of college, an overnight database monitoring job in the north shore of Pittsburgh - legit two blocks from PNC Park - when Cole was called up to debut. That place had no web blockers for employees, for some ridiculously stupid reason, so I was streaming Cole’s debut. I was thinking that my co-workers would think I was cool and wanting to see how Cole did as well. I mean this was a generational pitching prospect debuting right down the street! But I don’t think a single other person there knew who Gerrit Cole was. Those database nerds… they were more into World of Warcraft than MLB pitching prospects. NERDS, man. I should’ve given them all swirlies. These were the types that would drink Mountain Dew instead of coffee at 7am. I didn’t fit in super well there. That job sucked, and I quit after four months to go to the company that I still work for.
I suppose the Cole thing is a pretty sad story for the Pirates. They didn’t get all that much from him and then he goes to Houston and is a top 2-3 starter in the league before finally winning that deserved Cy Young Award with the Yankees.
Anyways, maybe he can ramp it up to 24-25% as we go, but I kinda doubt it. The heater isn’t there anymore. But the pedigree and the command should keep him competitive. But he looks a lot more like Tanner Bibee than Jacob Misiorowski these days, although maybe that’s too disrespectful to King Cole.
I cannot buy a DFS win. The bankroll is getting drained. I went with Reid Detmers and some Giants last night. So that didn’t work.
→ 5.0IP 7H 5ER 5R 5K 3BB
Still 17 whiffs and a 16.3% SwStr% from Detmers. It would get real interesting if the Angels trade him. Imagine Reid Detmers on the Brewers. He’d never give up a run ever.
He has a very good mix of pitches. But the consistency is a problem.
He just couldn’t put guys away last night, not converting those whiffs into strikeouts efficiently.
David Peterson
→ 3.67IP 9H 10ER 10R 3K 3BB
Nice one, man! Good trade, Cubs! Those Cubbies have a terrible pitching staff, terrible. But they use those lasers to manipulate the winds and do various other forms of cheating and now they’re ten games over .500 after going 8-2 in their last ten.
I’m just so disappointed in the Pirates. They have such a good offense and such a good roster of SPs, but they’re once again buried in fourth place. It seems to me that they lose every game they shouldn’t win, and they win about 75% of the ones they should win. They do not win games against left handed starters.
I checked it, and indeed, the Pirates have the worst win-loss record in the league when facing a left-handed starter.
Here’s a crappy graphic Claude made me:
Foster Griffin - 5.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 2K 1BB
He kept it going. A 2:1 K:BB, but that funky pitch mix kept the Pirates off balance, and that’s what he’s been doing all year.
But the Pirates get Zack Littell today (at 11am eastern!), so that’s a guaranteed WIN. Book it!
Kyle Harrison
→ 2.67IP 5H 3ER 3R 3K 1BB
He could not get out of the third, throwing 38 pitches before being removed. He’s still been mostly good, but there have been a few clunkers in there. This is what happens when you don’t have really great stuff to rely on.
The D’Backs are really tough on lefties, though, so you can obviously forgive that and keep starting him. I still think he’s kinda really over-performed this year. Since June 7th:
Still an elite 23% K-BB% despite that 6.05 ERA. 26:4 K:BB… that’s very good. So yeah, he’s fine. Throwing Misiorowski + Harrison back-to-back must be wild for opponents. They see 103 from a righty one night and then like 94-95 from a lefty the next and both guys usually carve you up. Pretty sick 1-2 for the Brewers there and they both do the job so much differently.
Jake McCarthy continues his assault. What a game that was. A lead-off homer and a grand slam and a steal. The swipe and double pipe! And the pipe was full of RIBBIES. He’s up to #12 on my outfield player rater. Since May 15th, he’s #5 in the outfield. Here’s your all-hitter player rater since June 1st:
PCA’s been ridiculous. Luis Garcia has been an MVP type hitter since June began. 13 bombs for that guy, somehow more than Caminero who hits one every day.
It was all Rockies last night. 18 hits, 15 runs.
Cole Carrigg had a big one and he’s up to a very good .907 OPS this year.
Nothing fantastic in the xwOBA, but Coors boosts it. He has a solid 21% K%, 13% BB%, and 7% Brl%. Plus two steals in 22 games on a good 17% attempt rate.
Alrighty well it’s time for me to go to the neighbhoor PARADE. They get a fire truck over here and the kids follow it around the block on their bikes. I’ll strap up my jogging shoes and get a mile run in with them. Last year, the fire truck went like 15mph and left all the kids in the dust. They must have had somewhere else to be. Hoping for better fire truck velo today. Enjoy the Fourth, God Bless America!
