That’s right! A real life sponsor. Buy some protein water, please! I have no idea how they get 15 grams of protein into a liquid, that doesn’t seem to make any sense to me, but science, man. Who knows!
The call up corner gets a hit today. The Brewers are bringing up their #4 overall prospect. He’s an outfielder who they recently extended. He’s hit .321/.433/.469 in AAA this year in 78 games. Nine homers, 24 steals. A very high 24% attempt rate but only a 77% success rate. The fScores:
Lara seems to me to be a Nico Hoerner like hitter. Good speed, good contact (94% Zone Contact%), and probably a decent batting average guy (14% K%, 15% BB%), but there’s no going to be many homers coming. The Brewers have a whole mess of these types of prospect. We’ve seen Brice Turang develop some power, but it took awhile.
The best case with Lara is that he can hit .280 or something with like a 10-homer, 25-steal pace. He hits the ball on the ground a lot and rarely pulls it in the air. He’s a very patient hiteter with a 39% Swing%, and that’s why he can take some walks. As usual, we’ll see big league pitchers go at him a lot more than minor league pitchers did, so I doubt it’s a double-digit walk rate right away. There will be adjustments, you’re just grabbing him now hoping for a boost in AVG + SB.
Playing time is the other question. I doubt they’re bringing him up to bench him four times a week, but there’s no obvious place for him to get every day reps. Garrett Mitchell is the centerfielder against righties, and while he’s healthy I don’t think he’s getting benched in those spots. The corresponding move for this one will be David Hamilton to the IL, and that guy is an infielder. Maybe Sal Frelick will get some more days off, or something, but you could see Lara mostly used against LHP in the short term. This isn’t a guy to break the bank to get, but AVG + SB could be nice.
Cristopher Sanchez opened the week by allowing nine earned runs and 12 hits.
→ 3.33IP 12H 9ER 9R 1K 1BB
That’s 26% of the earned runs he’s allowed all year. His ERA goes from 2.00 to 2.62. He now has a 0.86 ERA at home (73 innings) and a 5.32 mark on the road (47.1 innings). He’s made 11 of 19 starts at home, which is a little bit lucky you’d have to say.
Why would a pitcher like Sanchez be way better at home than on the road? It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Let’s check the career splits now:
→ Home: 2.39 ERA, 27% K%, 5% BB%, 2.74 xFIP
→ Road: 4.17 ERA, 21% K%, 6.5% BB%, 3.41 xFIP
That is pretty striking. Six points less of K% on the road… why would that be? Maybe just a comfort thing. There’s no park factor that could explain that.
Just everything went wrong in this one. The Royals were all over him for three homers, a .550 xwOBA, and just one strikeout. Hard to explain, but what are you going to do? Bench the guy on the road? That would be weird and stupid, right? Or would it? I don’t know. A 3.40 xFIP is still good, the guy just isn’t a stud on the road but he’s a super-stud at home.
Griffin Jax also likes pitching at home and he struck out ten Yankees yesterday. A WALK-WALK-HOMER sequence cost him three runs. That kinda put a damper on things.
→ 5.0IP 1H 3ER 3R 10K 2BB
He was perfect other than that three batter sequence. Not often you see a dude give up three runs on one hit. It was just the third time all year someone gave up 3+ ER on one hit:
Usually that’ll happen with like 4+ walks, but this time it was just two for Jax. Every base runner scored and it all happened very fast. But overall, a very encouraging start for Jax who has been great for the Rays in the rotation.
16 whiffs, a 19.8% SwStr%, a 55.6% Strike% on 81 pitches. We once again saw the five-inning or 80-pitch cap. He went six innings the start before that, but like we said yesterday, he did that with like 70 pitches. They really don’t want him to come out for the sixth inning unless he’s been almost unbelievably efficient to that point in the game.
Jax since June 7th:
→ 2.32 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 30% K%, 5% BB%
He’s had great success with the sweeper (18% SwStr%, .242 xwOBA) and changeup (23% SwStr%, .241 xwOBA). Those are his two main pitches. But he does have the 95mph sinker and 96mph four-seamer to back them up.
The Rays continue to impress with what they can do. It’s them and the Brewers as the clear sharpest FO’s in the league. The Dodgers should probably be mentioned there too, but you don’t really get to see how good they are because of all of the money they spend. They have the best of both worlds, big money and big sharpness in management. The Rays and Brewers make due just fine with only having the latter.
But the money shows up in October, I guess. The Brewers and Rays haven’t sniffed a World Series while the Dodgers have won two in a row. It’s the Billy Beane quote in real life:
“My shit doesn't work in the playoffs. My job is to get us to the playoffs. What happens after that is luck”
I don’t think that’s exactly what he meant. Contrary to popular opinion, the Dodgers did have to get pretty lucky to win two straight World Series. There’s variance for every team no matter the payroll, but they are really able to build their roster optimized to the postseason because of the cash they can spend. The Ohtani guy helps a lot, too.
Apparently Cam Schlittler was a little bit MAD at the NERDS yesterday.
→ 8.0IP 4H 1ER 1R 8K 0BB
After the game:
"They want to say there's f--king regression because I have one bad outing, so again, it was personal to go out there and have a dominant start and put this team in the right position."
Alright, man. Relax. My question is that if you can just try harder and perform better, why don’t you just do that every time? You only work like 35 times a year. It was PERSONAL he said. That guy should probably get off social media. But these Gen Z kids…
Schlittler piped 56% fastball for a 28% SwStr% and 67% Strike%, total dominance on the pitch. The low elevating in Tampa helps boost the pitch shapes. I don’t know if that fully explains it yesterday, but sometimes Schlittler’s heater is just so good that he doesn’t need much else.
It’s the #2 SP four-seamer in the league per MLB DW PITCH GRADING. Only Misiorowski clears him.
Those grades are performance-based rather than just some pitch movement model. It looks at SwStr%, Stuff+, xwOBA allowed, and Ball% to grade each pitch. There aren’t too many guys in the world that can grab a SwStr% above 15% on a four-seam fastball, but Schlitdaddy is one of them and he showed up big with that pitch yesterday.
I was lucky to avoid Kevin Gausman in DFS cash last night.
→ 5.33IP 5H 4ER 7R 8K 5BB
Five walks, seven runs. Just four earnies though. He’s a frustrating guy to roster. I guess I wouldn’t know cause I never draft him. But he’s given up 7, 6, 1, and 4 ER the last four starts now.
Which makes it the perfect BUYING opportunity. He always has these bad starts, and when he clumps a few of them together that opens the window to take advantage. Reminder on his 2025 season:
→ First Half: 4.19 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 23% K%, 7.5% BB%, 1.15 HR/9
→ Second Half: 2.81 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 26% K%, 4.9% BB%, 0.76 HR/9
No guarantees that the 35 year old can repeat that, but it still makes a lot of sense to buy low right now if you can. He’s been here before with early/mid season struggles and he’s no stranger to dominating down the stretch of a season.
Dustin May was told he’d be limited in the pitch count, but he thrw 82 pitches and got through 4.2 innings with a crisp 7:0 K:BB after having a really bad start last time.
→ 4.67IP 4H 0ER 0R 7K 0BB
It’s been a bumpy ride:
But when he’s good, he’s really good. His 22 points last night offsetse the -19 he had in the previous two. That’s what you get from a guy who relies so much on BABIP. At least he’s not walking guys this year at 6.5% BB%, and he’s always been very tough to homer off of. So I like May for most leagues.
Shane Drohan - 6.0IP 6H 1ER 3R 2K 2BB
Not dominant by any means. A 5.9% SwStr% and a bad 44.7% Strike%. But the ball got into play and went at the fielders. The WHIP wasn’t good, but a quality start and a win were there so we’re happy with that. But I’m growing a little bit sour on his true upside moving forward. Not sure I should still be hodling him in this ten team league. But I’ll probably hold on for one more start before the break. He should get a start in Pittsburgh this weekend, which is a very good spot as a left-handed pitcher.
Miles Mikolas with his third win of the year despite giving up SEVEN earned runs.
Only seven pitchers since 2021 have won while giving up 7+ ER:
An impressive feat. It’s hard to give up that many runs. But Mike Burrows was right there with him. He had Mikolas’ back.
→ Mikolas: 6.0IP 9H 7ER 7R 3K 2BB
→ Burrows: 4.33IP 9H 7ER 10R 3K 2BB
In the Daily Slip I wrote, we took an over 14.5 total runs bet, so that was cool. About a 5:1 hit. You gotta love when bad pitchers do this.
But the top scoring hitter of the day did not come from the Royals 15-run performance or that Nationals game. It was Heliot Ramos with two homers and a triple.
Ramos has missed some time this year, and he’s not been anything terrific:
→ .269/.310/.487, 8 HR, 0 SB
But he’s big part of the Giants offense. He hit lead-off last night and feasted on Gausman in route to a 10-1 Giants win.
His fantasy value is muted. He’s not really a base stealer and he strikes out a good bit. He does have good raw power but not enough to really break through the ceiling that AT&T Park creates. But he’s a solid player and definitely an ADD (45% owned) in your deep leagues.
James Wood continued his torrid pace. He’s the first player over 1,000 fantasy points scored this year, crossing that line with his homer and three walks last night.
24 bombs, 14 steals, a .268 batting average. Pitchers have been shy, not wanting to throw him many strikes. And they still have gotten the better of him a lot (30% K%), but when he has something to hit he does not miss very often (.428 xwOBA), and the walks turn into steals at a decent clip as well.
Like with most young players, the stolen bases have calmed down a little bit since his rookie year. He ran at a 24% attempt rate in 2024 and the last two years it’s down at 13%. He stole 15 last year, and he’s already at 14 this year. That’s mostly because his OBP is almost 50 points higher. But he’s a fantasy stud; probably an easy first rounder next year.
He is what us Pirate fans have been hoping that Oneil Cruz could be.
Jose Caballero hit two bombs. His 9th and 10th of the season. So that’s a new career-high. He hit nine in 139 games in 2024 for his previous high. Yankees Stadium is nice for the HR boost, but yeah these two came in Tropicana. Cab has a .704 OPS (career high) with 20 steals and ten homers. A very, very valuable fantasy bat.
That’s all the time we have for today. Buy some of that protein water, it will make me look good and maybe extend the sponsorship!
